El sacrificio de Cristo, ofrecido una vez y para siempre
10 La Ley es solo una sombra de los bienes venideros, no la presencia[a] misma de estas realidades. Por eso nunca puede perfeccionar a los que se acercan para adorar mediante los mismos sacrificios que se ofrecen sin cesar año tras año. 2 De otra manera, ¿no habrían dejado ya de hacerse sacrificios? Pues los que rinden culto, purificados de una vez por todas, ya no se habrían sentido culpables de pecado. 3 Pero esos sacrificios son un recordatorio anual de los pecados, 4 ya que es imposible que la sangre de los toros y de los machos cabríos quite los pecados.
5 Por eso, al entrar en el mundo, Cristo dijo:
«A ti no te complacen sacrificios ni ofrendas;
en su lugar, me preparaste un cuerpo;
6 no te agradaron ni holocaustos
ni sacrificios por el pecado.
7 Por eso dije: “Aquí me tienes
—como está escrito en el libro—.
He venido, oh Dios, a hacer tu voluntad”».[b]
8 Primero dijo: «Sacrificios y ofrendas, holocaustos y sacrificios por el pecado no te complacen ni fueron de tu agrado», a pesar de que la Ley exigía que se ofrecieran. 9 Luego añadió: «Aquí me tienes: He venido a hacer tu voluntad». Así quitó lo primero para establecer lo segundo. 10 Y en virtud de esa voluntad somos santificados mediante el sacrificio del cuerpo de Jesucristo, ofrecido una vez y para siempre.
11 Todo sacerdote celebra el culto día tras día ofreciendo repetidas veces los mismos sacrificios, que nunca pueden quitar los pecados. 12 Pero este sacerdote, después de ofrecer por los pecados un solo sacrificio para siempre, se sentó a la derecha de Dios 13 en espera de que sus enemigos sean puestos por estrado de sus pies. 14 Porque con un solo sacrificio ha perfeccionado para siempre a los que han sido santificados.
15 También el Espíritu Santo nos da testimonio de ello. Primero dice:
16 «Este es el pacto que haré con ellos
después de aquel tiempo», afirma el Señor,
«pondré mis leyes en su corazón
y las escribiré en su mente».[c]
17 Después añade:
«Y nunca más me acordaré de sus pecados y maldades».[d]
18 Y puesto que estos han sido perdonados, ya no hace falta ofrecer otro sacrificio por el pecado.
Llamada a la perseverancia
19 Así que, hermanos, mediante la sangre de Jesús, tenemos confianza para entrar en el Lugar Santísimo 20 por el camino nuevo y vivo que él nos ha abierto a través de la cortina, lo cual hizo por medio de su cuerpo. 21 También tenemos un gran sacerdote al frente de la casa de Dios. 22 Acerquémonos, pues, a Dios con corazón sincero y con la plena seguridad que da la fe, interiormente purificados de una conciencia culpable y los cuerpos lavados con agua pura. 23 Mantengamos firme la esperanza que profesamos, porque fiel es el que hizo la promesa. 24 Preocupémonos los unos por los otros, a fin de estimularnos al amor y a las buenas obras. 25 No dejemos de congregarnos, como acostumbran hacer algunos, sino animémonos unos a otros, y con mayor razón ahora que vemos que aquel día se acerca.
26 Si después de recibir el conocimiento de la verdad pecamos obstinadamente, ya no hay sacrificio por los pecados. 27 Solo queda una aterradora expectativa de juicio, el fuego ardiente que ha de devorar a los adversarios. 28 Cualquiera que rechazaba la Ley de Moisés moría irremediablemente por el testimonio de dos o tres testigos. 29 ¿Cuánto mayor castigo piensan ustedes que merece el que ha pisoteado al Hijo de Dios, que ha profanado la sangre del pacto por la cual había sido santificado y que ha insultado al Espíritu de la gracia? 30 Pues conocemos al que dijo: «Mía es la venganza; yo pagaré»;[e] y también: «El Señor juzgará a su pueblo».[f] 31 ¡Es aterrador caer en las manos del Dios vivo!
32 Recuerden aquellos días pasados cuando ustedes, después de haber sido iluminados, sostuvieron una dura lucha y soportaron mucho sufrimiento. 33 Unas veces se vieron expuestos públicamente al insulto y a la persecución; otras veces se solidarizaron con los que eran tratados de igual manera. 34 También se compadecieron de los encarcelados y, cuando a ustedes les confiscaron sus bienes, lo aceptaron con alegría, conscientes de que tenían una mejor herencia y más permanente.
35 Así que no abandonen su confianza, la cual ha de ser grandemente recompensada. 36 Ustedes necesitan perseverar para que, después de haber cumplido la voluntad de Dios, reciban lo que él ha prometido. 37 Pues dentro de muy poco tiempo,
«el que ha de venir vendrá y no tardará.
38 Pero el justo[g] vivirá por la fe.
Y si se vuelve atrás,
no será de mi agrado».[h]
39 Pero nosotros no somos de los que se vuelven atrás y acaban por perderse, sino de los que tienen fe y preservan su vida.

Ineficacia de la ley antigua
10 Porque la ley de Moisés era solamente una sombra de los bienes que habían de venir, y no su presencia verdadera. Por eso la ley nunca puede hacer perfectos a quienes cada año se acercan a Dios para ofrecerle los mismos sacrificios. 2 Pues si la ley realmente pudiera purificarlos del pecado, ya no se sentirían culpables, y dejarían de ofrecer sacrificios. 3 Pero estos sacrificios sirven más bien para hacerles recordar sus pecados cada año. 4 Porque la sangre de los toros y de los chivos no puede quitar los pecados.
El sacrificio de Cristo
5 Por eso Cristo, al entrar en el mundo, dijo a Dios:
«No quieres sacrificio ni ofrendas,
sino que me has dado un cuerpo.
6 No te agradan los holocaustos ni las ofrendas para quitar el pecado.
7 Entonces dije: “Aquí estoy, tal como está escrito de mí en el libro,
para hacer tu voluntad, oh Dios.”»
8 En primer lugar, dice que Dios no quiere ni le agradan sacrificios ni ofrendas de animales, ni holocaustos para quitar el pecado, a pesar de que son cosas que la ley manda ofrecer. 9 Y después añade: «Aquí vengo para hacer tu voluntad.» Es decir, que quita aquellos sacrificios antiguos y pone en su lugar uno nuevo. 10 Dios nos ha consagrado porque Jesucristo hizo la voluntad de Dios al ofrecer su propio cuerpo en sacrificio una sola vez y para siempre.
11 Todo sacerdote judío oficia cada día y sigue ofreciendo muchas veces los mismos sacrificios, aunque éstos nunca pueden quitar los pecados. 12 Pero Jesucristo ofreció por los pecados un solo sacrificio para siempre, y luego se sentó a la derecha de Dios. 13 Allí está esperando hasta que Dios haga de sus enemigos el estrado de sus pies, 14 porque por medio de una sola ofrenda hizo perfectos para siempre a los que han sido consagrados a Dios. 15 Y el Espíritu Santo nos lo confirma, al decir:
16 «La alianza que haré con ellos
después de aquellos días,
será ésta, dice el Señor:
Pondré mis leyes en su corazón
y las escribiré en su mente.
17 Y no me acordaré más de sus pecados y maldades.»
18 Así pues, cuando los pecados han sido perdonados, ya no hay necesidad de más ofrendas por el pecado.
Exhortación a la fidelidad
19 Hermanos, ahora podemos entrar con toda libertad en el santuario gracias a la sangre de Jesús, 20 siguiendo el nuevo camino de vida que él nos abrió a través del velo, es decir, a través de su propio cuerpo. 21 Tenemos un gran sacerdote al frente de la casa de Dios. 22 Por eso, acerquémonos a Dios con corazón sincero y con una fe completamente segura, limpios nuestros corazones de mala conciencia y lavados nuestros cuerpos con agua pura. 23 Mantengámonos firmes, sin dudar, en la esperanza de la fe que profesamos, porque Dios cumplirá la promesa que nos ha hecho. 24 Busquemos la manera de ayudarnos unos a otros a tener más amor y a hacer el bien. 25 No dejemos de asistir a nuestras reuniones, como hacen algunos, sino animémonos unos a otros; y tanto más cuanto que vemos que el día del Señor se acerca.
26 Porque si seguimos pecando intencionalmente después de haber conocido la verdad, ya no queda más sacrificio por los pecados; 27 solamente nos queda la terrible amenaza del juicio y del fuego ardiente que destruirá a los enemigos de Dios. 28 Cuando alguien desobedece la ley de Moisés, si hay dos o tres testigos que declaren contra él, se le condena a muerte sin compasión. 29 Pues ¿no creen ustedes que mucho mayor castigo merecen los que pisotean al Hijo de Dios y desprecian su sangre, los que insultan al Espíritu del Dios que los ama? Esa sangre es la que confirma la alianza, y con ella han sido ellos consagrados. 30 Sabemos que el Señor ha dicho: «A mí me corresponde hacer justicia; yo pagaré.» Y ha dicho también: «El Señor juzgará a su pueblo.» 31 ¡Terrible cosa es caer en las manos del Dios viviente!
32 Pero recuerden ustedes los tiempos pasados, cuando acababan ustedes de recibir la luz y soportaron con fortaleza los sufrimientos de una gran lucha. 33 Algunos de ustedes fueron insultados y maltratados públicamente, y otros se unieron en el sufrimiento con los que fueron tratados así. 34 Ustedes tuvieron compasión de los que estaban en la cárcel, y hasta con alegría se dejaron quitar lo que poseían, sabiendo que en el cielo tienen algo que es mucho mejor y que permanece para siempre. 35 No pierdan, pues, su confianza, porque ella les traerá una gran recompensa. 36 Ustedes necesitan tener fortaleza en el sufrimiento, para hacer la voluntad de Dios y recibir así lo que él ha prometido. 37 Pues la Escritura dice:
«Pronto, muy pronto,
vendrá el que tiene que venir.
No tardará.
38 Mi justo por la fe vivirá;
pero si se vuelve atrás,
no estaré contento de él.»
39 Y nosotros no somos de los que se vuelven atrás y van a su condenación, sino de los que alcanzan la salvación porque tienen fe.

10 The old system of Jewish laws gave only a dim foretaste of the good things Christ would do for us. The sacrifices under the old system were repeated again and again, year after year, but even so they could never save those who lived under their rules. 2 If they could have, one offering would have been enough; the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all and their feeling of guilt would be gone.
3 But just the opposite happened: those yearly sacrifices reminded them of their disobedience and guilt instead of relieving their minds. 4 For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats really to take away sins.[a]
5 That is why Christ said as he came into the world, “O God, the blood of bulls and goats cannot satisfy you, so you have made ready this body of mine for me to lay as a sacrifice upon your altar. 6 You were not satisfied with the animal sacrifices, slain and burnt before you as offerings for sin. 7 Then I said, ‘See, I have come to do your will, to lay down my life, just as the Scriptures said that I would.’”
8 After Christ said this about not being satisfied with the various sacrifices and offerings required under the old system, 9 he then added, “Here I am. I have come to give my life.”
He cancels the first system in favor of a far better one. 10 Under this new plan we have been forgiven and made clean by Christ’s dying for us once and for all.
11 Under the old agreement the priests stood before the altar day after day offering sacrifices that could never take away our sins. 12 But Christ gave himself to God for our sins as one sacrifice for all time and then sat down in the place of highest honor at God’s right hand, 13 waiting for his enemies to be laid under his feet. 14 For by that one offering he made forever perfect in the sight of God all those whom he is making holy.
15 And the Holy Spirit testifies that this is so, for he has said, 16 “This is the agreement I will make with the people of Israel, though they broke their first agreement: I will write my laws into their minds so that they will always know my will, and I will put my laws in their hearts so that they will want to obey them.” 17 And then he adds, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds.”
18 Now, when sins have once been forever forgiven and forgotten, there is no need to offer more sacrifices to get rid of them.
19 And so, dear brothers, now we may walk right into the very Holy of Holies, where God is, because of the blood of Jesus. 20 This is the fresh, new, life-giving way that Christ has opened up for us by tearing the curtain—his human body—to let us into the holy presence of God.
21 And since this great High Priest of ours rules over God’s household, 22 let us go right in to God himself, with true hearts fully trusting him to receive us because we have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean and because our bodies have been washed with pure water.
23 Now we can look forward to the salvation God has promised us. There is no longer any room for doubt, and we can tell others that salvation is ours, for there is no question that he will do what he says.
24 In response to all he has done for us, let us outdo each other in being helpful and kind to each other and in doing good.
25 Let us not neglect our church meetings, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of his coming back again is drawing near.
26 If anyone sins deliberately by rejecting the Savior after knowing the truth of forgiveness, this sin is not covered by Christ’s death; there is no way to get rid of it. 27 There will be nothing to look forward to but the terrible punishment of God’s awful anger, which will consume all his enemies. 28 A man who refused to obey the laws given by Moses was killed without mercy if there were two or three witnesses to his sin. 29 Think how much more terrible the punishment will be for those who have trampled underfoot the Son of God and treated his cleansing blood as though it were common and unhallowed, and insulted and outraged the Holy Spirit who brings God’s mercy to his people.
30 For we know him who said, “Justice belongs to me; I will repay them”; who also said, “The Lord himself will handle these cases.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
32 Don’t ever forget those wonderful days when you first learned about Christ. Remember how you kept right on with the Lord even though it meant terrible suffering. 33 Sometimes you were laughed at and beaten, and sometimes you watched and sympathized with others suffering the same things. 34 You suffered with those thrown into jail, and you were actually joyful when all you owned was taken from you, knowing that better things were awaiting you in heaven, things that would be yours forever.
35 Do not let this happy trust in the Lord die away, no matter what happens. Remember your reward! 36 You need to keep on patiently doing God’s will if you want him to do for you all that he has promised. 37 His coming will not be delayed much longer. 38 And those whose faith has made them good in God’s sight must live by faith, trusting him in everything. Otherwise, if they shrink back, God will have no pleasure in them.
39 But we have never turned our backs on God and sealed our fate. No, our faith in him assures our souls’ salvation.

- Hebrews 10:4 The blood of bulls and goats merely covered over the sins, taking them out of sight for hundreds of years until Jesus Christ came to die on the cross. There he gave his own blood which forever took those sins away.
