Jezus' offer is volmaakt

10 Want alle dingen in de wet van Mozes waren een afbeelding en een schaduw van de goede dingen die nog moesten komen. Ze waren niet die dingen zelf. Daarom kunnen de offers die jaar in jaar uit worden gebracht, de mensen nooit volmaakt maken. Als de mensen door de offers wél volmaakt werden, zouden die offers vanzelf zijn gestopt. Want dan zouden de mensen die hun offer hadden gebracht en vergeving gekregen hadden, daarna nooit meer ongehoorzaam zijn geweest aan God. Maar juist door de offers worden de mensen er elk jaar aan herinnerd dat ze ongehoorzaam zijn. Want het bloed van stieren en geiten kan nu eenmaal niet de ongehoorzaamheid zelf wegnemen. Daarom zegt Jezus bij zijn komst in de wereld: "U wilde eigenlijk geen dier-offers, meel-offers en wijn-offers. Maar U heeft Mij een lichaam gegeven om te offeren. Het gaat U niet om brand-offers en vergevings-offers. Daarom zei Ik: 'Kijk God, hier ben Ik om te doen wat U wil, zoals in de Boeken al over Mij staat geschreven.' " Eerst zegt Hij dus: "U wilde geen vlees-offers, brand-offers en vergevings-offers. Het gaat U daar niet om." Toch werden die gebracht, omdat dat moest van de wet van Mozes. Maar daarna zegt Hij: "Kijk, Ik ben gekomen om te doen wat U wil." Hij doet het eerste weg en vervangt het door het tweede. 10 En door het offer van het lichaam van Jezus Christus zijn wij voor altijd volmaakt gemaakt.

11 Verder moest elke priester elke dag dienen en vaak dezelfde offers brengen. Dat was omdat die offers nooit de ongehoorzaamheid van de mensen konden wegdoen. 12 Maar Jezus heeft één offer gebracht voor alle ongehoorzaamheid van alle mensen. Daarna is Hij voor altijd naast God gaan zitten. 13 Daar wacht Hij tot het moment dat al zijn vijanden overwonnen zullen zijn. 14 Want door één offer heeft Hij de mensen die door Hem bij God mogen horen, ook volmaakt gemaakt. 15 Ook de Heilige Geest heeft daarover gesproken. Want vroeger heeft Hij gezegd: 16 "De Heer zegt: Dit is het verbond dat Ik later met hen zal sluiten: Ik zal mijn wet in hun binnenste schrijven, in hun hart en in hun verstand. 17 En Ik zal niet meer denken aan alles waarin ze Mij ongehoorzaam zijn geweest." 18 Als dan nu alles helemaal vergeven is, is er verder geen offer voor de ongehoorzaamheid meer nodig.

19 Broeders en zusters, door het geofferde bloed van Jezus kunnen we nu dus zonder vrees en vol geloof het hemelse heiligdom binnengaan. 20 Jezus is de nieuwe en levende weg naar God. Over die nieuwe weg kunnen we naar God gaan, achter het gordijn dat voor de hemelse allerheiligste kamer hangt. Jezus Zelf, zijn lichaam, is als het ware dat gordijn. Alleen door Hem kunnen we binnengaan. 21 We hebben een machtige Hogepriester over het huis van God. 22 Daarom kunnen we nu naar God toe komen met een eerlijk hart en vol vertrouwen dat Hij ons zal ontvangen. Want ons hart is schoongewassen door het bloed van Jezus. Daardoor hebben we nu een goed geweten. En ons lichaam is gewassen met zuiver water. 23 Laten we blijven geloven in wat Hij heeft beloofd, zonder eraan te twijfelen. Want Hij die de beloften heeft gedaan, is trouw. Hij zal doen wat Hij heeft beloofd.

24 En we moeten ook zorgzaam op elkaar letten. We moeten elkaar aanmoedigen tot liefde en tot het doen van goede dingen. 25 En laten we niet wegblijven uit onze bijeenkomst, zoals sommigen van jullie gewend zijn te doen. Maar we moeten elkaar blijven aanmoedigen om te leven zoals God het wil. Want de laatste dag komt eraan.

26 Want als we de waarheid hebben gevonden, maar tóch expres ongehoorzaam blijven aan God, is er geen één offer meer wat daar nog vergeving voor kan brengen. 27 Dan blijft er alleen een vreselijke toekomst over: het oordeel van God en het hete vuur dat de mensen zal verbranden die niet willen gehoorzamen. 28 Als iemand expres ongehoorzaam is aan de wet van Mozes, wordt hij zonder genade gedood. Tenminste, als twee of drie mensen hetzelfde zeggen over wat er is gebeurd. 29 Dan kunnen jullie wel begrijpen dat de straf nog veel zwaarder is als mensen zich helemaal niets meer willen aantrekken van de Zoon van God. Ze vinden het bloed van het verbond waardoor ze gered waren, niets bijzonders meer. Daarmee hebben ze de Geest van Gods goedheid zwaar beledigd. 30 En we weten Wie het was die zei: "Ik heb het recht om te straffen. En Ik zal het ook doen!" En ergens anders staat: "De Heer zal rechtspreken over zijn volk." 31 Het is vreselijk om door de levende God gestraft te worden!

32 Denk eens aan wat er allemaal is gebeurd. Toen jullie pas de waarheid hadden gevonden, hebben jullie veel moeten lijden. 33 Soms omdat jullie zelf slecht werden behandeld. En andere keren omdat jullie meeleden met andere gelovigen die slecht behandeld werden. 34 Want jullie hebben ook met mij meegeleden omdat ik gevangen was genomen. En jullie hebben niet geklaagd als alles van jullie werd afgenomen. Jullie hebben het blij verdragen. Want jullie wisten dat jullie in de hemel iets bezitten wat veel méér waard is en wat niemand jullie kan afnemen.

35 Blijf alsjeblieft zo vol geloof en vol vertrouwen. Want jullie zullen er een grote beloning voor krijgen. 36 Jullie moeten geduldig blijven doen wat God van jullie vraagt. Dan zullen jullie krijgen wat Hij jullie heeft beloofd. 37 God zegt: "Het duurt nog maar heel, heel even, en dan zal Hij die komt, er zijn. Hij zal niet langer wegblijven. 38 De mensen die leven zoals Ik het wil, zullen door hun geloof leven. Maar als ze lui worden in hun geloof en Mij niet meer gehoorzamen, kan Ik niet meer blij met hen zijn." 39 Maar wij hebben niets te maken met luiheid waardoor we verloren gaan, maar met geloof waardoor we worden gered.

10 The law is only an ·unclear picture [L shadow] of the good things coming in the future; it is not the ·real thing [reality itself; true image of them]. The people under the law offer the same sacrifices every year, but these sacrifices can never make perfect those who come near to worship God. If the law could make them perfect, the sacrifices would have already ·stopped [ceased; been abolished]. The worshipers would ·be made clean [L have been cleansed/purified once for all; C forever], and they would no longer have a ·sense of [consciousness of; feeling of guilt about] sin. But these sacrifices remind them of their sins every year, because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

So when ·Christ [L he] came into the world, he said:

“You did not ·want [desire] sacrifices and offerings,
    but you have ·prepared a body for me [or given me a body].
  You ·did not ask for [were not pleased with; took no delight in] burnt offerings
    and offerings to take away sins.
  Then I said, ‘·Look [or Here I am; T Behold], I have come.
    It is written about me in the ·book [scroll].
    ·God [L O God], I have come to do ·what you want [your will; Ps. 40:6–8].’”

  In this Scripture ·he first said [or cited above he said], “You did not ·want [desire] sacrifices and offerings. You ·did not ask for [were not pleased with; took no delight in] burnt offerings and offerings to take away sins [v. 6].” (These are all sacrifices that the law ·commands [requires; prescribes].) Then he said, “·Look [or Here I am; T Behold], I have come to do ·what you want [your will; v. 7].” God ·ends [abolishes; takes away] the ·first system of sacrifices [L first] so he can ·set up [establish] the ·new system [L second]. 10 And ·because of this [L by God’s will/desire/intention], we are ·made holy [sanctified; set apart to God] through the sacrifice Christ made in his body ·once and for all time [L once for all; 7:27; 9:12, 26].

11 ·Every day [Day after day] ·the priests [L every priest] stand and do their ·religious [priestly] service, ·often [again and again] offering the same sacrifices. Those sacrifices can never take away sins. 12 But after ·Christ [L this one; C this priest] offered one sacrifice for sins, forever, he sat down at the right ·side [L hand] of God [1:3, 13; Ps. 110:1a]. 13 And now ·Christ [L he] waits there for his enemies to be ·put under his power [L made a footstool for his feet; 1:13; Ps. 110:1b]. 14 With one ·sacrifice [offering] he made perfect forever those who are being ·made holy [sanctified; set apart to God].

15 The Holy Spirit also ·tells [testifies/bears witness to] us about this. First he says:

16 “This is the ·agreement [covenant; contract] I will make
    with them ·at that time [L after those days], says the Lord.
I will put my ·teachings [laws] in their hearts
    and write them on their minds [8:10; Jer. 31:33].”

17 Then he says:

“Their sins and ·the evil things they do [their lawless/wicked actions]
    I will not remember anymore [8:12; Jer. 31:34].”

18 Now when these have been forgiven, there is no more need for a ·sacrifice [offering] for sins.

Continue to Trust God

19 So, brothers and sisters, ·we are completely free [L since we have confidence…; C this “since” clause continues through v. 22] to enter the ·Most Holy Place [sanctuary; L holy things; T Holy of Holies] without fear ·because of [or by means of] the blood of Jesus’ death. 20 We can enter through a new and living way that Jesus ·opened [or restored; renewed; or inaugurated] for us. It leads through the curtain—Christ’s ·body [T flesh; C like the curtain of the Most Holy Place, Christ’s body, sacrificed for us, provides access to the presence of God]. 21 And since we have a great priest over God’s house, 22 let us come near to God with a ·sincere [true] heart and a ·sure [confident] faith, because we have ·been made free [L had our hearts sprinkled; C sacrificial blood was sprinkled on people and things to purify them] from a ·guilty [evil] conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water [C water was used in Judaism for ritual purification]. 23 Let us hold ·firmly [without wavering] to the hope that we have confessed, because ·we can trust God to do what he promised [L the one who promised is faithful].

24 Let us think about ·each other and help each other [or how to provoke/rouse/encourage each another] to show love and do good deeds. 25 You should not ·stay away from [neglect; forsake] ·the church meetings [meeting together], as some are doing [C some were abandoning Christianity and returning to Judaism], but you should encourage each other [C to stay faithful to Christ and to other believers], and even more so as you see the day coming [C the day of the Lord, when Christ will return].

26 If we ·decide to [deliberately] go on sinning after we have learned the ·truth [L knowledge of the truth], there is no longer any sacrifice for sins. 27 There is nothing but ·fear in waiting for the [a fearful/terrifying expectation/prospect of] judgment and the ·terrible [raging; furious] fire that will ·destroy [consume; devour] ·all those who live against God [the enemies of God; L those who oppose; the adversaries]. 28 Anyone who ·refused to obey [rejected; disregarded] the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the basis of the ·evidence [testimony] provided by two or three witnesses [Deut. 17:6]. 29 So how much worse punishment do you think is deserved by those who ·do not respect [trample on; show contempt for] the Son of God, who ·look at the blood of the agreement that made them holy as no different from others’ blood [L profane/treat as unholy/common the blood of the covenant], who insult the Spirit of God’s grace? 30 We know that God said, “·I will punish those who do wrong [T Vengeance is mine]; I will repay them [Deut. 32:35].” And he also said, “The Lord will judge his people [Deut. 32:36; Ps. 135:14].” 31 It is a ·terrible [dreadful; terrifying] thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 Remember those ·days in the past [or early days of your faith] when you first ·learned the truth [L were enlightened]. You ·remained strong [endured; persevered] through a hard struggle with many sufferings. 33 Sometimes you were ·hurt and attacked before crowds of people [L exposed to public shame/ridicule and persecution/oppression], and sometimes you shared with those who were being treated that way. 34 You ·helped [had sympathy for; or suffered with] the prisoners [C probably Christians imprisoned for their faith]. You even had joy when ·all that you owned [your property] was ·taken from you [seized; confiscated], because you knew you had ·something [L a possession; property] better and more lasting.

35 So do not ·lose [throw away] ·the courage you had in the past [or your confident trust in God; or your boldness], which has a great reward. 36 You must ·hold on [persevere; endure], so you can do ·what God wants [the will of God] and receive what he has promised. 37 For in a very short time [Is. 26:20],

“The One who is coming will come
    and will not delay.
38 ·Those who are right with me [L My righteous one]
    will live by faith.
But if they ·turn back with fear [shrink back],
    ·I [L My soul] will not be pleased with them [Hab. 2:3–4].”

39 But we are not those who ·turn back [shrink back] and are ·lost [destroyed]. We are people who have faith ·and are saved [leading to the possession/ preservation of life/the soul].

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

10 The law is only a shadow(A) of the good things(B) that are coming—not the realities themselves.(C) For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect(D) those who draw near to worship.(E) Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.(F) But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.(G) It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats(H) to take away sins.(I)

Therefore, when Christ came into the world,(J) he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
    but a body you prepared for me;(K)
with burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you were not pleased.
Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll(L)
    I have come to do your will, my God.’”[a](M)

First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”(N)—though they were offered in accordance with the law. Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”(O) He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy(P) through the sacrifice of the body(Q) of Jesus Christ once for all.(R)

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices,(S) which can never take away sins.(T) 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,(U) he sat down at the right hand of God,(V) 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.(W) 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect(X) forever those who are being made holy.(Y)

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies(Z) to us about this. First he says:

16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
    after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
    and I will write them on their minds.”[b](AA)

17 Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts
    I will remember no more.”[c](AB)

18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

A Call to Persevere in Faith

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence(AC) to enter the Most Holy Place(AD) by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way(AE) opened for us through the curtain,(AF) that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest(AG) over the house of God,(AH) 22 let us draw near to God(AI) with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings,(AJ) having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience(AK) and having our bodies washed with pure water.(AL) 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope(AM) we profess,(AN) for he who promised is faithful.(AO) 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,(AP) 25 not giving up meeting together,(AQ) as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another(AR)—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.(AS)

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning(AT) after we have received the knowledge of the truth,(AU) no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire(AV) that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(AW) 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God(AX) underfoot,(AY) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant(AZ) that sanctified them,(BA) and who has insulted the Spirit(BB) of grace?(BC) 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[d](BD) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”[e](BE) 31 It is a dreadful thing(BF) to fall into the hands(BG) of the living God.(BH)

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,(BI) when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.(BJ) 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution;(BK) at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.(BL) 34 You suffered along with those in prison(BM) and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.(BN) 35 So do not throw away your confidence;(BO) it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere(BP) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.(BQ) 37 For,

“In just a little while,
    he who is coming(BR) will come
    and will not delay.”[f](BS)

38 And,

“But my righteous[g] one will live by faith.(BT)
    And I take no pleasure
    in the one who shrinks back.”[h](BU)

39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.
