¹⁴ Since the children have flesh and blood,^(A) he too shared in their humanity^(B) so that by his death he might break the power^(C) of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil^(D)— ¹⁵ and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear^(E) of death. ¹⁶ For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.^{(F) 17} For this reason he had to be made like them,^[a](G) fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful^(H) and faithful high priest^(I) in service to God,^(J) and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.^(K)

²⁶ Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.^(A) But he has appeared^(B) once for all^(C) at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.^{(D) 27} Just as people are destined to die once,^(E) and after that to face judgment,^{(F) 28} so Christ was sacrificed once^(G) to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time,^(H) not to bear sin,^(I) but to bring salvation^(J) to those who are waiting for him.^(K)

²⁴ “He himself bore our sins”^(A) in his body on the cross,^(B) so that we might die to sins^(C) and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”^(D)

²¹ God made him who had no sin^(A) to be sin^[a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.^(B)
