The Promise of Rest

Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, (A)let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, [a]not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:

(B)“So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ”

although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: (C)“And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this place: (D)“They shall not enter My rest.”

Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:

(E)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

For if [b]Joshua had (F)given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem (A)to have failed to reach it. For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because (B)they were not united by faith with those who listened.[a] For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,

(C)“As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest,’”

although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: (D)“And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” And again in this passage he said,

(E)“They shall not enter my rest.”

Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news (F)failed to enter because of disobedience, again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,

(G)“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”

For if Joshua had given them rest, God[b] would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God's rest has also (H)rested from his works as God did from his.

The Believer’s Rest

Therefore, we must fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have (A)come short of it. For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also did; but (B)the word [a]they heard did not benefit them, because [b]they were not united with those who listened with faith. For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,

(C)As I swore in My anger,
They certainly shall not enter My rest,”

although His works were finished (D)from the foundation of the world. For He has said (E)somewhere concerning the seventh day: “(F)And God (G)rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this passage, “(H)They certainly shall not enter My rest.” Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who previously had good news preached to them failed to enter because of (I)disobedience, He again sets a certain day, “Today,” saying [c]through David after so long a time just (J)as has been said before,

(K)Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

For (L)if [d]Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. Consequently, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also (M)rested from his works, as (N)God did from His.

A Sabbath-Rest for the People of God

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.(A) For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.[a](B) Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’”[b](C)

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”[c](D) And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”(E)

Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience,(F) God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts.”[d](G)

For if Joshua had given them rest,(H) God would not have spoken(I) later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[e](J) just as God did from his.(K)

Promised Rest for God’s People

God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it. For this good news—that God has prepared this rest—has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn’t share the faith of those who listened to God.[a] For only we who believe can enter his rest. As for the others, God said,

“In my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest,’”[b]

even though this rest has been ready since he made the world. We know it is ready because of the place in the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh day: “On the seventh day God rested from all his work.”[c] But in the other passage God said, “They will never enter my place of rest.”[d]

So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted:

“Today when you hear his voice,
    don’t harden your hearts.”[e]

Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. So there is a special rest[f] still waiting for the people of God. 10 For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world.

Not Legalism but Christ

11 In Him you were also (A)circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by (B)putting off the body [a]of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 (C)buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through (D)faith in the working of God, (E)who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 (F)having wiped out the [b]handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 (G)Having disarmed (H)principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

16 So let no one (I)judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a [c]festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 (J)which are a shadow of things to come, but the [d]substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has [e]not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to (K)the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, (L)grows with the increase that is from God.

20 [f]Therefore, if you (M)died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, (N)why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— 21 (O)“Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—(P)according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 (Q)These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and [g]neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

11 In him also (A)you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by (B)putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 (C)having been buried with him in baptism, in which (D)you were also raised with him through faith in (E)the powerful working of God, (F)who raised him from the dead. 13 (G)And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God (H)made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by (I)canceling (J)the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. Let No One Disqualify You

16 Therefore let no one (N)pass judgment on you (O)in questions of food and drink, or with regard to (P)a festival or (Q)a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 (R)These are a shadow of the things to come, but (S)the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one (T)disqualify you, (U)insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, (V)going on in detail about visions,[c] (W)puffed up without reason by (X)his sensuous mind, 19 and (Y)not (Z)holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

20 If with Christ (AA)you died to the (AB)elemental spirits of the world, (AC)why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 (AD)“Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 ((AE)referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to (AF)human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in (AG)promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are (AH)of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

11 In him you were also circumcised(A) with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh[a](B) was put off when you were circumcised by[b] Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism,(C) in which you were also raised with him(D) through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.(E)

Freedom From Human Rules

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you(M) by what you eat or drink,(N) or with regard to a religious festival,(O) a New Moon celebration(P) or a Sabbath day.(Q) 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come;(R) the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility(S) and the worship of angels disqualify you.(T) Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head,(U) from whom the whole body,(V) supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.(W)

11 When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature.[a] 12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. 14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 In this way, he disarmed[b] the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.

16 So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. 17 For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality. 18 Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels,[c] saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, 19 and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.

20 You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, 21 “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? 22 Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. 23 These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.
