Hebrews 12:4-7
New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children—
“My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord
or lose heart when you are punished by him,(A)
6 for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves
and chastises every child whom he accepts.”(B)
7 Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children, for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline?(C)

God Disciplines His Children
4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.(A) 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart(B) when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(C)
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a](D)
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(E) For what children are not disciplined by their father?

Hebrews 12:11-15
New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
11 Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.(A)
12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees(B) 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.(C)
Warnings against Rejecting God’s Grace
14 Pursue peace with everyone and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God, that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble and through it many become defiled.(D)

13 As a father has compassion for his children,
so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.(A)
14 For he knows how we were made;
he remembers that we are dust.(B)
15 As for mortals, their days are like grass;
they flourish like a flower of the field;(C)
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more.
17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
18 to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.(D)

The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth
6 He left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands!(A) 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary[a] and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense[b] at him.(B) 4 Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown and among their own kin and in their own house.”(C) 5 And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them.(D) 6 And he was amazed at their unbelief.
