⁶ These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the first tent^[a] to carry out their ritual duties,

³ And you shall say to them: This is the offering by fire^[a] that you shall offer to the Lord: two male lambs a year old without blemish, daily, as a regular offering.^(A)

⁸ Once when he was serving as priest before God during his section’s turn of duty,^{(A) 9} he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord to offer incense.^{(B) 10} Now at the time of the incense offering, the whole assembly of the people was praying outside.^{(C) 11} Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.

¹¹ Even against the prince of the host it acted arrogantly; it took the regular burnt offering away from him and overthrew the place of his sanctuary.^(A)

Pride and Apostasy

¹⁶ But when he had become strong he grew proud, to his destruction. For he acted unfaithfully toward the Lord his God and entered the temple of the Lord to make offering on the altar of incense.^{(A) 17} But the priest Azariah went in after him, with eighty priests of the Lord who were men of valor;^{(B) 18} they withstood King Uzziah and said to him, “It is not for you, Uzziah, to make offering to the Lord, but for the priests the descendants of Aaron, who are consecrated to make offering. Go out of the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully, and it will bring you no honor from the Lord God.”^{(C) 19} Then Uzziah was enraged. Now he had a censer in his hand to make offering, and when he became enraged with the priests a defiling disease broke out on his forehead, in the presence of the priests in the house of the Lord, by the altar of incense.^(D)

⁷ Aaron shall offer fragrant incense on it; every morning when he dresses the lamps he shall offer it,^{(A) 8} and when Aaron sets up the lamps in the evening, he shall offer it, a regular incense offering before the Lord throughout your generations.

²¹ In the tent of meeting, outside the curtain that is before the covenant, Aaron and his sons shall tend it from evening to morning before the Lord. It shall be a perpetual ordinance to be observed throughout their generations by the Israelites.^(A)
