⁶ But this man, who does not belong to their ancestry, collected tithes^[a] from Abraham and blessed him who had received the promises.^(A)

God’s Promise Realized through Faith

¹³ For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith.^(A)

³ Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life but resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.^(A)

⁴ See how great he is! Even^[a] Abraham the patriarch gave him a tenth of the spoils.^(B)

⁴ “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations.^{(A) 5} No longer shall your name be Abram,^[a] but your name shall be Abraham,^[b] for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations.^{(B) 6} I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.^{(C) 7} I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.^{(D) 8} And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land where you are now an alien, all the land of Canaan, for a perpetual holding, and I will be their God.”^(E)

¹⁹ He blessed him and said,

And Abram gave him one-tenth of everything.^(B)

¹⁷ By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac. He who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son,^(A)

¹³ All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth,^(A)

The Priestly Order of Melchizedek

7 This “Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham as he was returning from defeating the kings and blessed him,”^(A)

The Certainty of God’s Promise

¹³ When God made a promise to Abraham, because he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself,^{(A) 14} saying, “I will surely bless you and multiply you.” ¹⁵ And thus Abraham,^[a] having patiently endured, obtained the promise.
