⁴ Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the ^[a]spoils.

And he ^(B)gave him ^[a]a tithe of all.

²⁹ “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you ^(A)of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

^28 (A)There is neither Jew nor Greek, ^(B)there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all ^(C)one in Christ Jesus. ²⁹ And ^(D)if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s ^(E)seed, and ^(F)heirs according to the promise.

^8 (A)Then He gave him the covenant of circumcision; ^(B)and so Abraham begot Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; ^(C)and Isaac begot Jacob, and ^(D)Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs.

The Patriarchs in Egypt

^9 (E)“And the patriarchs, becoming envious, ^(F)sold Joseph into Egypt. ^(G)But God was with him

⁵ No longer shall ^(A)your name be called ^[a]Abram, but your name shall be ^[b]Abraham; ^(B)for I have made you a father of ^[c]many nations. ⁶ I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make ^(C)nations of you, and ^(D)kings shall come from you.

²³ And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, ^(A)“Abraham believed God, and it was ^[a]accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called ^(B)the friend of God.

¹⁷ (as it is written, ^(A)“I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, ^(B)who gives life to the dead and calls those ^(C)things which do not exist as though they did; ¹⁸ who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, ^(D)“So shall your descendants be.”

¹¹ And ^(A)he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that ^(B)he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also, ¹² and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father ^(C)Abraham had while still uncircumcised.

The Promise Granted Through Faith

¹³ For the promise that he would be the ^(D)heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
