⁴ See how great this man was to whom Abraham ^(A)the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils!

And Abram gave him ^(A)a tenth of everything.

²⁹ “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about ^(A)the patriarch David ^(B)that he both died and ^(C)was buried, and ^(D)his tomb is with us to this day.

^28 (A)There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave^[a] nor free, ^(B)there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. ²⁹ And ^(C)if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, ^(D)heirs according to promise.

⁸ And ^(A)he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And ^(B)so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and ^(C)circumcised him on the eighth day, and ^(D)Isaac became the father of Jacob, and ^(E)Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

⁹ “And the patriarchs, ^(F)jealous of Joseph, ^(G)sold him into Egypt; but ^(H)God was with him

⁵ No longer shall your name be called Abram,^[a] but ^(A)your name shall be Abraham,^{[b] (B)}for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. ⁶ I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make ^(C)you into nations, and ^(D)kings shall come from you.

²³ and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, ^(A)“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a ^(B)friend of God.

¹⁷ as it is written, ^(A)“I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, ^(B)who gives life to the dead and calls into existence ^(C)the things that do not exist. ¹⁸ In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, ^(D)“So shall your offspring be.”

^11 (A)He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was ^(B)to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, ¹² and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

The Promise Realized Through Faith

¹³ For ^(C)the promise to Abraham and his offspring ^(D)that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.
