⁷ During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions^(A) with fervent cries and tears^(B) to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard^(C) because of his reverent submission.^(D)

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven^(A) and prayed:

Gethsemane^(A)

³² They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” ³³ He took Peter, James and John^(B) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. ³⁴ “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”^(C) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

³⁵ Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour^(D) might pass from him. ³⁶ “Abba,^[a] Father,”^(E) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup^(F) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”^(G)

³⁷ Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? ³⁸ Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.^(H) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”^(I)

³⁹ Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.

⁴⁶ About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,^[a] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).^[b](A)

⁴¹ He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down^(A) and prayed, ⁴² “Father, if you are willing, take this cup^(B) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”^{(C) 43} An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.^{(D) 44} And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.^[a]

³⁴ And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).^[a](A)

²⁸ This is my blood of the^[a] covenant,^(A) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.^{(B) 29} I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you^(C) in my Father’s kingdom.”

³⁰ When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.^(D)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial^(E)

³¹ Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,^(F) for it is written:

³² But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”^(H)

³³ Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

³⁴ “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”^(I)

³⁵ But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,^(J) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

Gethsemane^(K)

³⁶ Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” ³⁷ He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee^(L) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. ³⁸ Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow^(M) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”^(N)

³⁹ Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup^(O) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”^(P)

⁴⁰ Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me^(Q) for one hour?” he asked Peter. ⁴¹ “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.^(R) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

⁴² He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”^(S)

⁴³ When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴ So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

⁵⁰ And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.^(A)
