¹⁶ Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?^(A)

² All the Israelites grumbled^(A) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!^(B) Or in this wilderness!^(C)

³⁸ But your assistant, Joshua^(A) son of Nun, will enter it. Encourage^(B) him, because he will lead^(C) Israel to inherit^(D) it.

³⁰ Not one of you will enter the land^(A) I swore with uplifted hand^(B) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh^(C) and Joshua son of Nun.^(D)

²⁴ But because my servant Caleb^(A) has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly,^(B) I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.^(C)

⁴ And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”^{[a](A) 5} So too, at the present time there is a remnant^(B) chosen by grace.^(C)

⁷ I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea^(A) to explore the land.^(B) And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,^{(C) 8} but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear.^(D) I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.^{(E) 9} So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance^(F) and that of your children^(G) forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’^[a]

¹⁰ “Now then, just as the Lord promised,^(H) he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved^(I) about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!^{(J) 11} I am still as strong^(K) today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous^(L) to go out to battle now as I was then.
