Service Well-Pleasing to God

13 Let mutual affection continue.

²⁰ Those who say, “I love God,” and hate a brother or sister are liars, for those who do not love a brother or sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.^{(A) 21} The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.

Faith Conquers the World

5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ^[a] has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child.^(B)

Suffering for Doing Right

⁸ Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind.^(A)

²² Now that you have purified your souls^[a] by your obedience to the truth^[b] so that you have genuine mutual affection, love one another deeply from the heart.^[c](A)

⁷ and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love.

¹⁷ Honor everyone. Love the family of believers.^[a] Fear God. Honor the emperor.^(A)

⁵ But now, dear lady, I ask you, not as though I were writing you a new commandment but one we have had from the beginning: let us love one another.^{(A) 6} And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment just as you have heard it from the beginning—you must walk in it.^(B)

⁹ Whoever says, “I am in the light,” while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness.^{(A) 10} Whoever loves a brother or sister abides in the light, and in such a person^[a] there is no cause for stumbling.

²⁴ And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds,

Thanksgiving

³ We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.^(A)
