⁸ But if you are without discipline, ^(A)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

^6 (A)In this you greatly rejoice, even though now ^(B)for a little while, ^(C)if necessary, you have been distressed by ^(D)various ^[a]trials, ⁷ so that the ^[b](E)proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which perishes ^(F)though tested by fire, ^(G)may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at ^(H)the revelation of Jesus Christ;

²² strengthening the souls of ^(A)the disciples, encouraging them to continue in ^(B)the faith, and saying, “^(C)It is through many tribulations that we must enter the kingdom of God.”

Keep Fervent in Your Love

4 Therefore, since ^(A)Christ has ^[a]suffered in the flesh, ^(B)arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because ^(C)the one who has ^[b]suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, ^2 (D)so as to live ^(E)the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human lusts, but for the ^(F)will of God.

¹⁹ Therefore, those also who suffer according to ^(A)the will of God are to entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

^2 (A)Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter ^(B)various ^[a]trials,

^12 (A)Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has ^[a]been approved, he will receive ^(B)the crown of life which the Lord ^(C)has promised to those who ^(D)love Him.

¹³ Those on the rocky soil are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and yet these do not have a firm root; ^[a]they believe for a while, and in a time of temptation they ^[b]fall away.
