¹⁹ to a trumpet blast^(A) or to such a voice speaking words^(B) that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them,^(C)

¹⁶ For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”^(A)

¹² Then the Lord spoke^(A) to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form;^(B) there was only a voice.^(C)

¹⁶ For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,^(A) with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel^(B) and with the trumpet call of God,^(C) and the dead in Christ will rise first.^(D)

⁵² in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound,^(A) the dead^(B) will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

²⁴ And you said, “The Lord our God has shown us^(A) his glory and his majesty,^(B) and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them.^{(C) 25} But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer.^{(D) 26} For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived?^{(E) 27} Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says.^(F) Then tell us whatever the Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.”^(G)

³ It was not with our ancestors^[a] that the Lord made this covenant, but with us,^(A) with all of us who are alive here today.^{(B) 4} The Lord spoke^(C) to you face to face^(D) out of the fire^(E) on the mountain. ⁵ (At that time I stood between^(F) the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord, because you were afraid^(G) of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:

²² These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness;^(AF) and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets^(AG) and gave them to me.

³³ Has any other people heard the voice of God^[a] speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived?^(A)
