¹⁷ For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was ^(A)rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

The Just Live by Faith

²⁶ For ^(A)if we sin willfully ^(B)after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there ^(C)no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and ^(D)fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. ²⁸ Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three ^(E)witnesses. ^29 (F)Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, ^(G)counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, ^(H)and insulted the Spirit of grace?

^8 (A)but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

^24 (A)“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for ^(B)many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. ^25 (C)When once the Master of the house has risen up and ^(D)shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ^(E)‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ^(F)‘I do not know you, where you are from,’ ²⁶ then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ ^27 (G)But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. ^(H)Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’

²³ And ^(A)then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; ^(B)depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

Esau’s Lost Hope^(A)

³⁰ Now it happened, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting. ³¹ He also had made ^[a]savory food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, “Let my father arise and ^(B)eat of his son’s game, that your soul may bless me.”

³² And his father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?”

So he said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”

³³ Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, “Who? Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed him—^(C)and indeed he shall be blessed.”

³⁴ When Esau heard the words of his father, ^(D)he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me—me also, O my father!”

³⁵ But he said, “Your brother came with deceit and has taken away your blessing.”

³⁶ And Esau said, ^(E)“Is he not rightly named ^[b]Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”

³⁷ Then Isaac answered and said to Esau, ^(F)“Indeed I have made him your master, and all his brethren I have given to him as servants; with ^(G)grain and wine I have ^[c]sustained him. What shall I do now for you, my son?”

³⁸ And Esau said to his father, “Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me—me also, O my father!” And Esau lifted up his voice ^(H)and wept.

³⁹ Then Isaac his father answered and said to him:

Jacob Escapes from Esau

⁴¹ So Esau ^(L)hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, ^(M)“The days of mourning for my father ^[e]are at hand; ^(N)then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
