16 (B)When Jeremiah had come to the dungeon cells and remained there many days, 17 King Zedekiah sent for him and received him. The king questioned him (C)secretly in his house and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?” Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, (D)“You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.” 18 Jeremiah also said to King Zedekiah, “What wrong have I done to you or your servants or this people, (E)that you have put me in prison? 19 (F)Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you and against this land’? 20 Now hear, please, O my lord the king: (G)let my humble plea come before you and (H)do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, lest I die there.” 21 So King Zedekiah gave orders, and they committed Jeremiah to (I)the court of the guard. And a loaf of bread was given him daily from the bakers' street, (J)until all the bread of the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in (K)the court of the guard.

22 The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders (A)to beat them with rods. 23 And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. 24 Having received this order, he put them into the inner (B)prison and fastened their feet in (C)the stocks.

The Philippian Jailer Converted

25 (D)About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, 26 and suddenly (E)there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately (F)all the doors were opened, and (G)everyone's bonds were unfastened. 27 When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and (H)was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” 29 And the jailer[a] called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he (I)fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, (J)what must I do to be (K)saved?” 31 And they said, (L)“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you (M)and your household.” 32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them (N)the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he (O)was baptized at once, he and all his family. 34 Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he (P)rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.

35 But when it was day, the magistrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.” 36 And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace.” 37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly, (Q)uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.” 38 The police reported these words to the magistrates, and (R)they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens. 39 So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and (S)asked them to leave the city. 40 So they went out of the prison and visited (T)Lydia. And when they had seen (U)the brothers, they encouraged them and departed.

  1. Acts 16:29 Greek he

And when he had seized him, he put him (A)in prison, delivering him over to four (B)squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest (C)prayer for him was made to God by the church.

Peter Is Rescued

Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, (D)bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. And behold, (E)an angel of the Lord (F)stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. (G)He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And (H)the chains fell off his hands. And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and (I)put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but (J)thought he was seeing a vision. 10 When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. (K)It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. 11 When Peter (L)came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that (M)the Lord has sent his angel and (N)rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

12 When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of (O)John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and (P)were praying. 13 And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, (Q)a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 Recognizing Peter's voice, (R)in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is (S)his angel!” 16 But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. 17 But (T)motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to (U)James and to (V)the brothers.”[a] Then he departed and went to another place.

18 Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. 19 And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and (W)ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there.
