And he commanded the people who lived in Jerusalem to give (A)the portion due to the priests and the Levites, that they might give themselves to the Law of the Lord. As soon as the command was spread abroad, the people of Israel gave in abundance the firstfruits of grain, wine, oil, honey, and of all the produce of the field. And they brought in abundantly (B)the tithe of everything. And the people of Israel and Judah who lived in the cities of Judah also brought in the tithe of cattle and sheep, and (C)the tithe of the dedicated things that had been dedicated to the Lord their God, and laid them in heaps.

He ordered the people living in Jerusalem to give the portion(A) due the priests and Levites so they could devote themselves to the Law of the Lord. As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the firstfruits(B) of their grain, new wine,(C) olive oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything. The people of Israel and Judah who lived in the towns of Judah also brought a tithe(D) of their herds and flocks and a tithe of the holy things dedicated to the Lord their God, and they piled them in heaps.(E)

21 (A)“To the Levites I have given every tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service that they do, their service in the tent of meeting, 22 (B)so that the people of Israel do not come near the tent of meeting, (C)lest they bear sin and die. 23 But (D)the Levites shall do the service of the tent of meeting, (E)and they shall bear their iniquity. It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations, and among the people of Israel they shall have no inheritance. 24 For the tithe of the people of Israel, which (F)they present as a contribution to the Lord, I have given to the Levites for an inheritance. Therefore I have said of them that they shall have no inheritance (G)among the people of Israel.”

25 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “Moreover, you shall speak and say to the Levites, ‘When you take from the people of Israel the tithe that I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall present a contribution from it to the Lord, (H)a tithe of the tithe. 27 (I)And your contribution shall be counted to you as though it were the grain of the threshing floor, and as the fullness of the winepress. 28 So you shall also present a contribution to the Lord from all your tithes, which you receive from the people of Israel. And from it you shall give the Lord's contribution to Aaron the priest. 29 Out of all the gifts to you, you shall present every contribution due to the Lord; from each its best part is to be dedicated.’ 30 Therefore you shall say to them, ‘When you have offered from it the best of it, (J)then the rest shall be counted to the Levites as produce of the threshing floor, and as produce of the winepress. 31 And you may eat it in any place, you and your households, for it is (K)your reward in return for your service in the tent of meeting. 32 And you shall (L)bear no sin by reason of it, when you have contributed the best of it. But you shall not (M)profane the holy things of the people of Israel, lest you die.’”

21 “I give to the Levites all the tithes(A) in Israel as their inheritance(B) in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting.(C) 22 From now on the Israelites must not go near the tent of meeting, or they will bear the consequences of their sin and will die.(D) 23 It is the Levites who are to do the work at the tent of meeting and bear the responsibility for any offenses they commit against it. This is a lasting ordinance(E) for the generations to come.(F) They will receive no inheritance(G) among the Israelites.(H) 24 Instead, I give to the Levites as their inheritance the tithes that the Israelites present as an offering to the Lord.(I) That is why I said concerning them: ‘They will have no inheritance among the Israelites.’”

25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “Speak to the Levites and say to them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you(J) as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the Lord’s offering.(K) 27 Your offering will be reckoned(L) to you as grain from the threshing floor(M) or juice from the winepress.(N) 28 In this way you also will present an offering to the Lord from all the tithes(O) you receive from the Israelites. From these tithes you must give the Lord’s portion to Aaron the priest. 29 You must present as the Lord’s portion the best and holiest part of everything given to you.’

30 “Say to the Levites: ‘When you present the best part, it will be reckoned to you as the product of the threshing floor or the winepress.(P) 31 You and your households may eat the rest of it anywhere, for it is your wages for your work at the tent of meeting.(Q) 32 By presenting the best part(R) of it you will not be guilty in this matter;(S) then you will not defile the holy offerings(T) of the Israelites, and you will not die.’”

and write Aaron's name on the staff of Levi. For there shall be one staff for the head of each fathers' house. Then you shall deposit them in the tent of meeting before the testimony, (A)where I meet with you. And the staff of the man (B)whom I choose shall sprout. Thus I will make to cease from me (C)the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against you.” Moses spoke to the people of Israel. And all their chiefs gave him staffs, one for each chief, according to their fathers' houses, twelve staffs. And the staff of Aaron was among their staffs. And Moses deposited the staffs before the Lord in (D)the tent of the testimony.

On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony, and behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds. Then Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the people of Israel. And they looked, and each man took his staff. 10 And the Lord said to Moses, “Put back (E)the staff of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept (F)as a sign for the rebels, (G)that you may make an end of their grumblings against me, lest they die.”

On the staff of Levi write Aaron’s name,(A) for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe. Place them in the tent of meeting(B) in front of the ark of the covenant law,(C) where I meet with you.(D) The staff belonging to the man I choose(E) will sprout,(F) and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling(G) against you by the Israelites.”

So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron’s staff was among them. Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the covenant law.(H)

The next day Moses entered the tent(I) and saw that Aaron’s staff,(J) which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.(K) Then Moses brought out all the staffs(L) from the Lord’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff.

10 The Lord said to Moses, “Put back Aaron’s staff(M) in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious.(N) This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.”
