Paulus en Silas naar Macedonië
16 Hij kwam ook weer in Derbe en Lystra. Daar was een leerling die Timoteüs heette. Hij was de zoon van een gelovige Joodse vrouw. Maar zijn vader was een Griek. 2 De broeders van Lystra en Ikonium vertelden goede dingen over hem. 3 Daarom vroeg Paulus hem of hij met hem mee wilde reizen. Hij liet hem eerst besnijden, vanwege de Joden in die plaats. Want iedereen wist dat zijn vader een Griek was en dat hij dus niet besneden was, ook al was hij een Jood[a] omdat zijn moeder Joods was.
4 In de steden die ze bezochten vertelden ze aan de gemeenten de beslissingen die de apostelen en de leiders van de gemeente in Jeruzalem hadden genomen. Ze zeiden hen dat ze zich daaraan moesten houden. 5 De gemeenten werden opgebouwd in hun geloof en werden elke dag groter.
6 Ze reisden door het gebied van Frygië en Galatië. Maar toen ze het woord in Asia wilden gaan vertellen, hield de Heilige Geest hen tegen. 7 Ze kwamen bij Mysië. Van daar probeerden ze naar Bitynië te reizen. Maar weer hield de Heilige Geest hen tegen. 8 Toen ze Mysië voorbij waren gereisd, kwamen ze in Troas. 9 Daar had Paulus 's nachts een droom. In die droom zag hij een Macedonische man staan die naar hen riep: "Steek over naar Macedonië en help ons!" 10 Toen zochten we onmiddellijk een schip om naar Macedonië te varen. Want we begrepen dat God wilde dat we de mensen in Macedonië het goede nieuws zouden gaan vertellen.
Lydia
11 Vanuit Troas voeren we recht naar Samotrace en de volgende dag naar Neapolis en Filippi. 12 Filippi is de belangrijkste stad in dit deel van Macedonië (Macedonië is één van de landen die door de Romeinen zijn veroverd). We bleven er een paar dagen. 13 Op de heilige rustdag liepen we de poort uit, naar de rivier. Want we dachten dat daar wel een Joodse gebedsplaats zou zijn. Daar gingen we zitten en spraken met de vrouwen die daar bij elkaar waren gekomen. 14 Eén van hen heette Lydia. Ze verkocht textielverf in de stad Tyatira en ze aanbad God. Ze luisterde goed. De Heer opende haar hart en ze geloofde wat Paulus vertelde. 15 Zij en alle mensen die in haar huis woonden, lieten zich dopen. Daarna nodigde ze ons uit. Ze zei: "Als jullie geloven dat ik echt bij de Heer hoor, kom dan in mijn huis logeren." En ze drong er erg bij ons op aan.
Paulus en Silas in de gevangenis in Filippi
16 Op één van de keren dat we naar de gebedsplaats gingen, kwamen we een slavin tegen in wie een waarzeggende geest zat. Haar eigenaars verdienden veel geld met haar waarzeggerij. 17 Ze liep Paulus en ons achterna en riep aldoor: "Deze mensen zijn dienaren van de Allerhoogste God. Zij wijzen ons hoe we gered kunnen worden." 18 Dat deed ze dagenlang. Toen werd Paulus boos en zei tegen de geest: "Ik beveel je in de naam van Jezus Christus om uit deze vrouw weg te gaan." En de geest ging onmiddellijk uit haar weg.
19 Haar eigenaars merkten dat ze geen geld meer met haar konden verdienen. Daarom grepen ze Paulus en Silas. Ze sleepten hen naar de markt, naar de bestuurders van de stad. 20 Daar zeiden ze: "Deze mannen brengen onze stad in rep en roer. 21 Want zij zijn Joden en leren aan de mensen dingen die wij als Romeinen niet mogen doen." 22 Ook andere mensen stookten de bestuurders op. Die scheurden Paulus en Silas toen de kleren van het lijf en gaven hen zweepslagen. 23 Nadat ze hen flink geslagen hadden, gooiden ze hen in de gevangenis. Ze zeiden tegen de bewaker dat hij hen goed moest bewaken. 24 Daarom zette hij hen gevangen in de binnenste kerker en maakte hun voeten vast in een blok. 25 Maar toen het ongeveer middernacht was, baden Paulus en Silas en zongen ze lofliederen om God te prijzen. De andere gevangenen luisterden naar hen.
26 Plotseling was er een zware aardbeving. De hele gevangenis schudde. Alle deuren gingen open en de boeien van de gevangenen raakten los. 27 De bewaker schrok wakker uit zijn slaap. Hij zag de deuren van de gevangenis openstaan. Hij greep zijn zwaard om zichzelf te doden, want hij dacht dat alle gevangenen waren ontsnapt. 28 Maar Paulus riep luid: "Doe jezelf geen kwaad, want we zijn allemaal nog hier!" 29 De bewaker liet licht brengen. Hij sprong naar binnen en liet zich bevend voor Paulus en Silas op zijn knieën vallen. 30 Toen bracht hij hen naar buiten en zei: "Heren, wat moet ik doen om gered te worden?" 31 Paulus antwoordde: "Geloof in de Heer Jezus. Dan zul je worden gered, met iedereen die in je huis woont." 32 En ze vertelden hem en alle mensen die in zijn huis woonden over de Heer. 33 En ook al was het nog nacht, toch nam hij hen onmiddellijk mee om hun wonden schoon te wassen. En hij liet zich dopen, samen met alle andere mensen die in zijn huis woonden. 34 Daarna bracht hij hen naar zijn huis. Daar liet hij een maaltijd voor hen klaarmaken. Hij was heel erg blij dat hij en iedereen in zijn huis in God waren gaan geloven.
Paulus en Silas weer vrijgelaten
35 Toen het dag was geworden, stuurden de bestuurders van de stad boodschappers naar de gevangenis. Ze zeiden tegen de bewaker: "Je mag die mannen weer vrijlaten." 36 De bewaker ging naar Paulus en zei: "De bestuurders van de stad hebben gezegd dat ik jullie mag vrijlaten. Jullie kunnen dus gaan. Ik wens jullie het allerbeste." 37 Maar Paulus antwoordde: "Ze hebben ons, ook al zijn wij Romeinen, zonder rechtspraak in het openbaar zweepslagen gegeven en ons in de gevangenis gezet.[b] Willen ze ons dan nu zomaar vrijlaten, zonder dat iemand het weet? Dat gaat zomaar niet! Laten ze zelf maar komen en ons naar buiten brengen!" 38 De boodschappers brachten dit over aan de bestuurders van de stad. Toen die hoorden dat zij Romeinen waren, schrokken ze. 39 Ze kwamen zelf naar de gevangenis, brachten Paulus en Silas naar buiten en vroegen hun uit de stad te vertrekken. 40 Maar Paulus en Silas gingen eerst naar Lydia. Ze bezochten de broeders en zusters en bemoedigden hen. Daarna vertrokken ze.

- Handelingen 16:3 Alle Joodse mannen moesten hun geslachtsdeel laten besnijden. Dat was het teken van het verbond van God met het Joodse volk. Lees Genesis 17:9-14. Het was dus niet goed dat Timoteüs niet besneden was.
- Handelingen 16:37 In die tijd kon iemand het Romeins burgerrecht kopen. De vaders van Paulus en Silas hadden dus waarschijnlijk Romeins burgerrecht gekocht. Vandaar dat Paulus kon zeggen dat hij en Silas Romeinen waren. Romeinen hadden recht op rechtspraak. De andere bewoners van het Romeinse Rijk niet: met hen konden de Romeinen doen wat ze wilden. Maar Paulus en Silas waren zonder rechtszaak in de gevangenis gegooid.

Paulus nimmt Timotheus mit sich
16 Er kam aber nach Derbe und Lystra. Und siehe, dort war ein Jünger namens Timotheus, der Sohn einer gläubigen jüdischen Frau, aber eines griechischen Vaters;
2 der hatte ein gutes Zeugnis von den Brüdern in Lystra und Ikonium.
3 Diesen wollte Paulus mit sich ziehen lassen. Und er nahm ihn und ließ ihn beschneiden um der Juden willen, die in jener Gegend waren; denn sie wussten alle, dass sein Vater ein Grieche war.
4 Als sie aber die Städte durchzogen, übergaben sie ihnen zur Befolgung die von den Aposteln und den Ältesten in Jerusalem gefassten Beschlüsse.
5 So wurden nun die Gemeinden im Glauben gestärkt und nahmen an Zahl täglich zu.
Der göttliche Ruf nach Mazedonien
6 Als sie aber Phrygien und das Gebiet Galatiens durchzogen, wurde ihnen vom Heiligen Geist gewehrt, das Wort in [der Provinz] Asia zu verkündigen.
7 Als sie nach Mysien kamen, versuchten sie, nach Bithynien zu reisen; und der Geist ließ es ihnen nicht zu.
8 Da reisten sie an Mysien vorbei und kamen hinab nach Troas.
9 Und in der Nacht erschien dem Paulus ein Gesicht: Ein mazedonischer Mann stand vor ihm, bat ihn und sprach: Komm herüber nach Mazedonien und hilf uns!
10 Als er aber dieses Gesicht gesehen hatte, waren wir sogleich bestrebt, nach Mazedonien zu ziehen, indem wir daraus schlossen, dass uns der Herr berufen hatte, ihnen das Evangelium zu verkündigen.
Paulus in Philippi. Lydia, die Purpurhändlerin
11 So fuhren wir denn [mit dem Schiff] von Troas ab und kamen geradewegs nach Samothrace und am folgenden Tag nach Neapolis
12 und von dort nach Philippi, welches die bedeutendste Stadt jenes Teils von Mazedonien ist, eine [römische] Kolonie[a]. Wir hielten uns aber in dieser Stadt etliche Tage auf.
13 Und am Sabbattag gingen wir vor die Stadt hinaus, an den Fluss, wo man zu beten pflegte;[b] und wir setzten uns und redeten zu den Frauen, die zusammengekommen waren.
14 Und eine gottesfürchtige Frau namens Lydia, eine Purpurhändlerin aus der Stadt Thyatira, hörte zu; und der Herr tat ihr das Herz auf, sodass sie aufmerksam achtgab auf das, was von Paulus geredet wurde.
15 Als sie aber getauft worden war und auch ihr Haus[c], bat sie und sprach: Wenn ihr davon überzeugt seid, dass ich an den Herrn gläubig bin, so kommt in mein Haus und bleibt dort! Und sie nötigte uns.
Die Magd mit dem Wahrsagegeist
16 Es geschah aber, als wir zum Gebet gingen, dass uns eine Magd begegnete, die einen Wahrsagegeist hatte und ihren Herren durch Wahrsagen großen Gewinn verschaffte.
17 Diese folgte Paulus und uns nach, schrie und sprach: Diese Männer sind Diener des höchsten Gottes, die uns den Weg des Heils[d] verkündigen!
18 Und dies tat sie viele Tage lang. Paulus aber wurde unwillig, wandte sich um und sprach zu dem Geist: Ich gebiete dir in dem Namen Jesu Christi, von ihr auszufahren! Und er fuhr aus in derselben Stunde.
19 Als aber ihre Herren sahen, dass die Hoffnung auf ihren Gewinn entschwunden war, ergriffen sie Paulus und Silas und schleppten sie auf den Marktplatz vor die Obersten der Stadt;
20 und sie führten sie zu den Hauptleuten[e] und sprachen: Diese Männer, die Juden sind, bringen unsere Stadt in Unruhe
21 und verkündigen Gebräuche, welche anzunehmen oder auszuüben uns nicht erlaubt ist, da wir Römer sind!
22 Und die Volksmenge stand ebenfalls gegen sie auf; und die Hauptleute rissen ihnen die Kleider ab und befahlen, sie mit Ruten zu schlagen.
Paulus und Silas im Gefängnis. Die Bekehrung des Kerkermeisters
23 Und nachdem sie ihnen viele Schläge gegeben hatten, warfen sie sie ins Gefängnis und geboten dem Kerkermeister, sie sicher zu verwahren.
24 Dieser warf sie auf solchen Befehl hin ins innere Gefängnis und schloss ihre Füße in den Stock[f].
25 Um Mitternacht aber beteten Paulus und Silas und lobten Gott mit Gesang, und die Gefangenen hörten ihnen zu.
26 Da entstand plötzlich ein großes Erdbeben, sodass die Grundfesten des Gefängnisses erschüttert wurden, und sogleich öffneten sich alle Türen, und die Fesseln aller wurden gelöst.
27 Da erwachte der Kerkermeister aus dem Schlaf, und als er die Türen des Gefängnisses geöffnet sah, zog er sein Schwert und wollte sich töten, weil er meinte, die Gefangenen seien entflohen.
28 Aber Paulus rief mit lauter Stimme und sprach: Tu dir kein Leid an; denn wir sind alle hier!
29 Da forderte er ein Licht, sprang hinein und fiel zitternd vor Paulus und Silas nieder.
30 Und er führte sie heraus und sprach: Ihr Herren, was muss ich tun, dass ich gerettet werde?
31 Sie aber sprachen: Glaube an den Herrn Jesus Christus, so wirst du gerettet werden, du und dein Haus!
32 Und sie sagten ihm das Wort des Herrn und allen, die in seinem Haus waren.
33 Und er nahm sie zu sich in jener Stunde der Nacht und wusch ihnen die Striemen; und er ließ sich auf der Stelle taufen, er und all die Seinen.
34 Und er führte sie in sein Haus, setzte ihnen ein Mahl vor und freute sich, dass er mit seinem ganzen Haus an Gott gläubig geworden war.
Die Freilassung von Paulus und Silas
35 Als es aber Tag wurde, sandten die Hauptleute die Gerichtsdiener mit dem Befehl: Lass jene Leute frei!
36 Da verkündete der Kerkermeister dem Paulus diese Worte: Die Hauptleute haben die Anweisung gesandt, dass man euch freilassen soll. So geht nun hinaus und zieht hin in Frieden!
37 Paulus aber sprach zu ihnen: Sie haben uns, die wir Römer sind, ohne Urteil öffentlich geschlagen und ins Gefängnis geworfen, und jetzt schicken sie uns heimlich fort? Nicht so; sondern sie mögen selbst kommen und uns hinausführen!
38 Da verkündigten die Gerichtsdiener diese Worte den Hauptleuten; und diese fürchteten sich, als sie hörten, dass sie Römer seien.
39 Und sie kamen und redeten ihnen zu und führten sie hinaus und baten sie, die Stadt zu verlassen.
40 Da verließen sie das Gefängnis und begaben sich zu Lydia; und als sie die Brüder sahen, trösteten[g] sie sie und zogen fort.

16 And Rav Sha’ul arrived also in Derbe and went on to Lystra. And, hinei, a certain talmid of Moshiach was there by the name Timotiyos, the ben of a faithful Yiddisha isha but whose abba was Yevani.
2 Timotiyos was a bochur who was well spoken of by the Achim b’Moshiach in Lystra and Iconium.
3 Rav Sha’ul wanted Timotiyos to come along with his chavurah, so he took him and did a bris milah, because of the Yehudim in those places, for everyone had da’as that his abba was Yevani.
4 And as they were traveling through the cities, they were handing on to them to be shomer regarding the mitzvot that had been laid down by the Moshiach’s Shlichim and the Ziknei HaKehillot of Moshiach in Yerushalayim.
5 The Moshiach’s Kehillot, therefore, were growing in the emunah (faith), and yom yom were increasing in number.
6 And they traveled through the regions of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Ruach Hakodesh to speak the dvar Hashem in [the Roman Province of] Asia.
7 And having come to the border of Mysia, they were trying to go toward Bithynia, and the Ruach of Moshiach did not permit them.
8 So, passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
9 And during the lailah a chazon (vision) appeared to Rav Sha’ul. It was of a certain ish from Macedonia who had been standing and was begging him, saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us."
10 And when Rav Sha’ul saw the chazon, immediately he sought to cross over to Macedonia, concluding that Hashem had called us to preach the Besuras HaGeulah to them.
11 And having set sail from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and, on the next day, to Neapolis;
12 and from there, to Philippi, which is a chashuve city of the district of Macedonia, a Roman colony. And we were in this city, staying some yamim.
13 And on Shabbos, we went outside the sha’ar to a river where there was a mikveh mayim, supposing there we would find a minyan davening, and having sat down, we were speaking with the nashim who had assembled.
14 And a certain isha, by the name Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, of the city of Thyatira, a yirat Elohim, was listening, and Hashem opened her lev (heart) to pay attention to the things being spoken by Rav Sha’ul.
15 And when she was given the Moshiach’s tevilah of teshuva along with all her household, she said, "If you have judged me ne’emanah to Hashem, enter into my bais and stay there." And she prevailed upon us.
16 And it came about when we were going to where they held the minyan, that a certain shifchah having a ruach of the python (i.e., a shed, demon) came out to meet us. She was bringing much profit to her adonim by divination. [Dt 18:11; 1Sm 28:3,7]
17 This one was following Rav Sha’ul, crying out, saying, "These anashim are avadim of G-d HaElyon and are proclaiming to you the Derech HaYeshu’at Eloheinu."
18 And this kviusdik thing she was doing for many yamim; but Rav Sha’ul, whom she wouldn’t stop derkutshen, turned to the ruach, and said, "I command you in haShem of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua to come out from her!” And it came out in the same hour.
19 And when her adonim saw that the tikvah of their profit also left her, they seized Rav Sha’ul and Sila, and they dragged them into the marketplace before their manhigim;
20 And having brought them to the chief magistrates, they said, "These anashim, being Jews, are disturbing our city,”
21 "And they are proclaiming minhagim which it is not permitted for us, being Romans, to accept or to do." [ESTHER 3:8]
22 And the multitude rose up together keneged Rav Sha’ul and Sila; and the chief magistrates, having torn off the kaftans of Moshiach’s Shlichim, were giving orders to beat them.
23 And having inflicted klop after klop upon these Jewish men, they threw Rav Sha’ul and Sila into the beis hasohar, giving orders to the soher to guard them securely.
24 And the soher, having received such an order, threw them into the inner beis hasohar, and he fastened their feet in the stock. [IYOV 13:27; 33:11; YIRMEYAH 20:2,3; 29:26]
25 And about chatzot halailah Rav Sha’ul and Sila were davening and were singing niggunim to Hashem, and the prisoners were listening to them.
26 And, suddenly, there came a gevaltike earthquake, so that the beis hasohar was shaken to its foundations, and immediately were opened all delatot (doors) and all sharsherot (chains) were unfastened.
27 And the soher, having awakened and having seen the delatot of the beis hasohar having been opened, drew his cherev (sword) and was about to commit suicide, thinking the prisoners had run away.
28 But Rav Sha’ul shouted with a kol gadol, saying, "Do no harm to yourself, for we are all here."
29 And having asked for lights, he rushed in and, starting to tremble with pachad, he fell down before Rav Sha’ul and Sila.
30 Then, leading them outside, the soher said, "Rabbotai, what is it necessary for me to do that I may come to Yeshu’at Eloheinu?"
31 And Moshiach’s Shlichim said, "Have emunah in the Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Adoneinu Yehoshua, and you will come to Yeshu’at Eloheinu, you and your bais."
32 And they spoke to him the dvar Hashem together with all the ones in his bais.
33 And having taken them in that hour of the lailah, the soher washed their wounds, and at once he did getoivult (was given Moshiach’s tevilah of teshuva), as well as his entire mishpochah.
34 After that he led them to tish in his bais, and he set before them okhel, and he with his whole bais had simcha gedolah that they had come to emunah in Hashem.
35 And in the boker, the magistrates sent the soterim (policemen), saying, "Release those men."
36 And the soher reported these words to Rav Sha’ul, saying, "The magistrates sent word that you may be released; now, therefore, go and depart in shalom." [SHOFETIM 18:6]
37 But Rav Sha’ul said to them, "After giving us a public flogging, though we are uncondemned Roman citizens, they threw us into the beis hasohar; and now are they secretly sending us out? No, indeed! Let them come themselves and lead us out in public."
38 And the soterim reported these words to the magistrates, and the magistrates were afraid, hearing that Rav Sha’ul and Sila were both Roman citizens.
39 So the magistrates came, and entreated Rav Sha’ul and Sila, and brought them out, asking them to depart from the city.
40 And having come out from the beis hasohar, they came to Lydia, and having seen and encouraged the Achim b’Moshiach of the Kehillah that met in Lydia’s bais, Rav Sha’ul and Sila departed.
Acts 16

16 Sha’ul came down to Derbe and went on to Lystra, where there lived a talmid named Timothy. He was the son of a Jewish woman who had come to trust, and a Greek father. 2 All the brothers in Lystra and Iconium spoke well of Timothy. 3 Sha’ul wanted Timothy to accompany him; so he took him and did a b’rit-milah, because of the Jews living in those areas; for they all knew that his father had been a Greek.
4 As they went on through the towns, they delivered to the people the decisions reached by the emissaries and the elders in Yerushalayim for them to observe. 5 Accordingly, the congregations were strengthened in the faith and increased in number day by day.
6 They traveled through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, because they had been prevented by the Ruach HaKodesh from speaking the message in the province of Asia. 7 When they came to the frontier of Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia; but the Spirit of Yeshua would not let them. 8 So, after passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
9 There a vision appeared to Sha’ul at night. A man from Macedonia was standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us!” 10 As soon as he had seen the vision, we lost no time getting ready to leave for Macedonia; for we concluded that God had called us to proclaim the Good News to them.
11 Sailing from Troas, we made a straight run to Samothrace; the next day we went to Neapolis; 12 and from there, we went on to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that part of Macedonia. We spent a few days in this city; 13 then on Shabbat, we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we understood a minyan met. We sat down and began speaking to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in fine purple cloth. She was already a “God-fearer,” and the Lord opened up her heart to respond to what Sha’ul was saying. 15 After she and the members of her household had been immersed, she gave us this invitation: “If you consider me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay in my house.” And she insisted till we went.
16 Once, when we were going to the place where the minyan gathered, we were met by a slave girl who had in her a snake-spirit that enabled her to predict the future. She earned a lot of money for her owners by telling fortunes. 17 This girl followed behind Sha’ul and the rest of us and kept screaming, “These men are servants of God Ha‘Elyon! They’re telling you how to be saved!” 18 She kept this up day after day, until Sha’ul, greatly disturbed, turned and said to the spirit, “In the name of Yeshua the Messiah, I order you to come out of her!” And the spirit did come out, at that very moment.
19 But when her owners saw that what had come out was any further prospect of profit for them, they seized Sha’ul and Sila and dragged them to the market square to face the authorities. 20 Bringing them to the judges, they said, “These men are causing a lot of trouble in our city, since they are Jews. 21 What they are doing is advocating customs that are against the law for us to accept or practice, since we are Romans.” 22 The mob joined in the attack against them, and the judges tore their clothes off them and ordered that they be flogged. 23 After giving them a severe beating, they threw them in prison, charging the jailer to guard them securely. 24 Upon receiving such an order, he threw them into the inner cell and clamped their feet securely between heavy blocks of wood.
25 Around midnight, Sha’ul and Sila were praying and singing hymns to God, while the other prisoners listened attentively. 26 Suddenly there was a violent earthquake which shook the prison to its foundations. All the doors flew open and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer awoke, and when he saw the doors open he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, for he assumed that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Sha’ul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We’re all here!”
29 Calling for lights, the jailer ran in, began to tremble and fell down in front of Sha’ul and Sila. 30 Then, leading them outside, he said, “Men, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They said, “Trust in the Lord Yeshua, and you will be saved — you and your household!” 32 Whereupon they told him and everyone in his household the message about the Lord.
33 Then, even at that late hour of the night, the jailer took them and washed off their wounds; and without delay, he and all his people were immersed. 34 After that, he brought them up to his house and set food in front of them; and he and his entire household celebrated their having come to trust in God.
35 The next morning, the judges sent police officers with the order, “Release those men.” 36 The jailer told Sha’ul, “The judges have sent word to release both of you. So come out, and go on your way in peace.” 37 But Sha’ul said to the officers, “After flogging us in public when we hadn’t been convicted of any crime and are Roman citizens, they threw us in prison. Now they want to get rid of us secretly? Oh, no! Let them come and escort us out themselves!”
38 The officers reported these words to the judges, who became frightened when they heard that Sha’ul and Sila were Roman citizens. 39 They came and apologized to them; then, after escorting them out, requested them to leave the city. 40 From the prison they went to Lydia’s house, and after seeing and encouraging the brothers they departed.
