Trusting in Lying Words(A)

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, (B)“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who enter in at these gates to worship the Lord!’ ” Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (C)“Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. (D)Do not trust in these lying words, saying, ‘The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are these.’

“For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if you thoroughly (E)execute [a]judgment between a man and his neighbor, if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, (F)or walk after other gods to your hurt, (G)then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in (H)the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.

“Behold, you trust in (I)lying words that cannot profit. (J)Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and (K)walk after other gods whom you do not know, 10 (L)and then come and stand before Me in this house (M)which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered to do all these abominations’? 11 Has (N)this house, which is called by My name, become a (O)den of thieves in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” says the Lord.

The Watchman and His Message

33 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, speak to (A)the children of your people, and say to them: (B)‘When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from their territory and make him their (C)watchman, when he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people, then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does (D)not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, (E)his blood shall be on his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will [a]save his life. But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, (F)he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’

(G)“So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me. When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have [b]delivered your soul.

10 “Therefore you, O son of man, say to the house of Israel: ‘Thus you say, “If our transgressions and our sins lie upon us, and we (H)pine[c] away in them, (I)how can we then live?” ’ 11 Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, (J)‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked (K)turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For (L)why should you die, O house of Israel?’

The Fairness of God’s Judgment

12 “Therefore you, O son of man, say to the children of your people: ‘The (M)righteousness of the righteous man shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression; as for the wickedness of the wicked, (N)he shall not fall because of it in the day that he turns from his wickedness; nor shall the righteous be able to live because of his righteousness in the day that he sins.’ 13 When I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, (O)but he trusts in his own righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous works shall be remembered; but because of the iniquity that he has committed, he shall die. 14 Again, (P)when I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ if he turns from his sin and does [d]what is lawful and [e]right, 15 if the wicked (Q)restores the pledge, (R)gives back what he has stolen, and walks in (S)the statutes of life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 (T)None of his sins which he has committed shall be remembered against him; he has done what is lawful and right; he shall surely live.

17 (U)“Yet the children of your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not [f]fair.’ But it is their way which is not fair! 18 (V)When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die because of it. 19 But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he shall live because of it. 20 Yet you say, (W)‘The way of the Lord is not [g]fair.’ O house of Israel, I will judge every one of you according to his own ways.”

(B)Consecrate a fast,
Call a sacred assembly;
16 Gather the people,
(C)Sanctify the congregation,
Assemble the elders,
Gather the children and nursing babes;
(D)Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber,
And the bride from her dressing room.
17 Let the priests, who minister to the Lord,
Weep (E)between the porch and the altar;
Let them say, (F)“Spare Your people, O Lord,
And do not give Your heritage to reproach,
That the nations should [b]rule over them.
(G)Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’ ”

The Land Refreshed(H)

18 Then the Lord will (I)be zealous for His land,
And pity His people.
19 The Lord will answer and say to His people,
“Behold, I will send you (J)grain and new wine and oil,
And you will be satisfied by them;
I will no longer make you a reproach among the nations.

20 “But (K)I will remove far from you (L)the northern army,
And will drive him away into a barren and desolate land,
With his face toward the eastern sea
And his back (M)toward the western sea;
His stench will come up,
And his foul odor will rise,
Because he has done [c]monstrous things.”

21 Fear not, O land;
Be glad and rejoice,
For the Lord has done [d]marvelous things!
22 Do not be afraid, you beasts of the field;
For (N)the open pastures are springing up,
And the tree bears its fruit;
The fig tree and the vine yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, you children of Zion,
And (O)rejoice in the Lord your God;
For He has given you the [e]former rain faithfully,
And He (P)will cause the rain to come down for you—
The former rain,
And the latter rain in the first month.
24 The threshing floors shall be full of wheat,
And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.

25 “So I will restore to you the years (Q)that the swarming [f]locust has eaten,
The crawling locust,
The consuming locust,
And the chewing locust,
My great army which I sent among you.
26 You shall (R)eat in plenty and be satisfied,
And praise the name of the Lord your God,
Who has dealt wondrously with you;
And My people shall never be put to (S)shame.
27 Then you shall know that I am (T)in the midst of Israel:
(U)I am the Lord your God
And there is no other.
My people shall never be put to shame.

God’s Spirit Poured Out

28 “And(V) it shall come to pass afterward
That (W)I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
(X)Your sons and your (Y)daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My (Z)menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

30 “And (AA)I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
31 (AB)The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
(AC)Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
32 And it shall come to pass
That (AD)whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be [g]saved.
For (AE)in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be [h]deliverance,
As the Lord has said,
Among (AF)the remnant whom the Lord calls.

The Just Shall Live by Faith

I will (A)stand my watch
And set myself on the rampart,
And watch to see what He will say to me,
And what I will answer when I am corrected.

The Just Live by Faith

Then the Lord answered me and said:

(B)“Write the vision
And make it plain on tablets,
That he may run who reads it.
For (C)the vision is yet for an appointed time;
But at the end it will speak, and it will (D)not lie.
Though it tarries, (E)wait for it;
Because it will (F)surely come,
It will not tarry.

“Behold the proud,
His soul is not upright in him;
But the (G)just shall live by his faith.

The Whole Armor of God

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 (A)Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the [a]wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against (B)principalities, against powers, against (C)the rulers of [b]the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 (D)Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand (E)in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, (F)having girded your waist with truth, (G)having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 (H)and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking (I)the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And (J)take the helmet of salvation, and (K)the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 (L)praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, (M)being watchful to this end with all perseverance and (N)supplication for all the saints—

Preeminence of Christ

(A)For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask (B)that you may be filled with (C)the knowledge of His will (D)in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 (E)that you may walk worthy of the Lord, (F)fully pleasing Him, (G)being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the (H)knowledge of God; 11 (I)strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, (J)for all patience and longsuffering (K)with joy; 12 (L)giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of (M)the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from (N)the power of darkness (O)and [a]conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 (P)in whom we have redemption [b]through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

15 He is (Q)the image of the invisible God, (R)the firstborn over all creation. 16 For (S)by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or (T)dominions or [c]principalities or [d]powers. All things were created (U)through Him and for Him. 17 (V)And He is before all things, and in Him (W)all things consist. 18 And (X)He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, (Y)the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

Reconciled in Christ

19 For it pleased the Father that (Z)in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and (AA)by Him to reconcile (AB)all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, (AC)having made peace through the blood of His cross.

21 And you, (AD)who once were alienated and enemies in your mind (AE)by wicked works, yet now He has (AF)reconciled 22 (AG)in the body of His flesh through death, (AH)to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight— 23 if indeed you continue (AI)in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are (AJ)not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, (AK)which was preached to every creature under heaven, (AL)of which I, Paul, became a minister.
