The Promised Glory of the New House

In the second year of King Darius,(B) on the twenty-first day of the seventh month,(C) the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:(D) “Speak to Zerubbabel(E) son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak,[a](F) the high priest, and to the remnant(G) of the people. Ask them, ‘Who of you is left who saw this house(H) in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?(I) But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord. ‘Be strong,(J) Joshua son of Jozadak,(K) the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with(L) you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘This is what I covenanted(M) with you when you came out of Egypt.(N) And my Spirit(O) remains among you. Do not fear.’(P)

The Future Glory of the Temple

In the second year of King Darius, in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: “Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say: Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing?(A) Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the Lord; work, for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts,(B) according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear.(C)
