The Promised Glory of the New House

In the second year of King Darius,(B) on the twenty-first day of the seventh month,(C) the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:(D) “Speak to Zerubbabel(E) son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak,[a](F) the high priest, and to the remnant(G) of the people. Ask them, ‘Who of you is left who saw this house(H) in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?(I) But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord. ‘Be strong,(J) Joshua son of Jozadak,(K) the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with(L) you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘This is what I covenanted(M) with you when you came out of Egypt.(N) And my Spirit(O) remains among you. Do not fear.’(P)

The New Temple’s Diminished Splendor

Then on October 17 of that same year,[b] the Lord sent another message through the prophet Haggai. “Say this to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Jeshua[c] son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of God’s people there in the land: ‘Does anyone remember this house—this Temple—in its former splendor? How, in comparison, does it look to you now? It must seem like nothing at all! But now the Lord says: Be strong, Zerubbabel. Be strong, Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people still left in the land. And now get to work, for I am with you, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. My Spirit remains among you, just as I promised when you came out of Egypt. So do not be afraid.’
