It Is Time to Build the Temple
1 The prophet Haggai spoke the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah [Ezra 2:2; 3:2; Zech. 6:9–14], and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest [C also known as Jeshua; Ezra 2:2; 3:2; 5:2; Zech. 3:1–10]. This message came in the second year that Darius was king [520 bc], on the first day of the sixth month [C August 29; Elul 1 on the Hebrew calendar]:
2 “This is what the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] says: ‘The people say the right time has not come to rebuild the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord.’”
3 Then Haggai the prophet spoke the word of the Lord: 4 “Is it right for you to be living in ·fancy [L paneled] houses while ·the Temple [L this house] is still in ruins?”
5 This is what the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] says: “·Think about what you have done [Consider your ways]. 6 You have planted much, but you harvest little. You eat, but you do not become full. You drink, but you are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but you are not warm enough. You earn ·money [wages], ·but then you lose it all as if you had [L to] put it into a purse full of holes.”
7 This is what the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] says: “·Think about what you have done [Consider your ways]. 8 Go up to the mountains, bring back wood, and build the ·Temple [L house]. Then I will be pleased with it and be honored,” says the Lord. 9 “You look for much, but ·you find little [it came to little]. When you bring it home, I ·destroy it [L blew it away]. Why?” asks the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts]. “Because you all ·work hard for [are busy with; L run to] your own houses while my house is still in ruins! 10 Because of what you have done, the sky holds back its ·rain [dew] and the ground holds back its crops. 11 I have called for a ·time without rain [drought] on the land, and on the ·mountains [hill country], and on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil, the plants which the earth produces, the people, the ·farm animals [livestock], and all the work of your hands.”
12 Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest [1:1], and all the ·rest of the people who were left alive [remnant of the people; C those who returned from exile in Babylon] obeyed the [L voice of the] Lord their God and the message from Haggai the prophet, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people ·feared [were in awe of] the Lord.
13 Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave the Lord’s message to the people, saying, “The Lord says, ‘I am with you.’” 14 The Lord stirred up [L the spirit of] Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all the ·rest of the people who were left alive [remnant of the people; v. 12]. So they came and worked on the ·Temple [L house] of their God, the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts]. 15 They began on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month in the second year Darius was king [v. 1].

1 La deuxième année du règne de Darius, le premier jour du sixième mois, la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée par l’intermédiaire du prophète Aggée au gouverneur de Juda Zorobabel, fils de Shealthiel, et au grand-prêtre Josué, fils de Jotsadak: 2 «Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l’univers: Ce peuple prétend: ‘Il n'est pas encore venu, le moment de reconstruire la maison de l'Eternel.’ 3 Et pourtant, la parole de l'Eternel leur était adressée par l’intermédiaire du prophète Aggée: 4 ‘Est-ce le moment pour vous d'habiter vos maisons lambrissées, quand ce temple est détruit?’
5 »Voici ce que dit maintenant l'Eternel, le maître de l’univers: Réfléchissez attentivement à votre conduite! 6 Vous semez beaucoup et vous récoltez peu; vous mangez et vous n'êtes pas rassasiés; vous buvez et vous n'êtes pas désaltérés; vous êtes habillés et vous n'avez pas chaud; le salaire de celui qui travaille tombe dans un sac percé.
7 »Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l’univers:
Réfléchissez attentivement à votre conduite!
8 Montez sur la montagne, apportez du bois
et construisez le temple!
J'en aurai de la joie et je serai honoré,
dit l'Eternel.
9 Vous comptiez sur beaucoup, et vous avez eu peu;
vous l'avez rentré chez vous, mais j'ai soufflé dessus.
Pourquoi? déclare l'Eternel, le maître de l’univers.
A cause de ma maison qui est détruite,
tandis que vous vous empressez chacun pour votre maison.
10 Voilà pourquoi le ciel a retenu la rosée,
et la terre ses produits.
11 J'ai appelé la sécheresse sur le pays, sur les montagnes,
sur le blé, sur le vin nouveau, sur l'huile,
sur les produits du sol,
sur les hommes et sur les bêtes,
sur tout le travail de vos mains.»
12 Zorobabel, fils de Shealthiel, le grand-prêtre Josué, fils de Jotsadak, et tout le reste du peuple écoutèrent la voix de l'Eternel, leur Dieu, et les paroles du prophète Aggée, conformément à la mission que l'Eternel, leur Dieu, lui avait confiée. Et le peuple fut saisi de crainte devant l'Eternel. 13 Aggée, le messager de l'Eternel, dit au peuple d'après l'ordre de l'Eternel: «Je suis moi-même avec vous, déclare l'Eternel.»
14 L'Eternel réveilla l'esprit du gouverneur de Juda Zorobabel, fils de Shealthiel, l'esprit du grand-prêtre Josué, fils de Jotsadak, et l'esprit de tout le reste du peuple. Ils vinrent et ils se mirent à l'œuvre dans la maison de l'Eternel, le maître de l’univers, leur Dieu, 15 le vingt-quatrième jour du sixième mois, la deuxième année du règne de Darius.

The Command to Build God’s House(A)
1 In (B)the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by (C)Haggai the prophet to (D)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to (E)Joshua the son of (F)Jehozadak, the high priest, saying, 2 “Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the Lord’s house should be built.” ’ ”
3 Then the word of the Lord (G)came by Haggai the prophet, saying, 4 “Is it (H)time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this [a]temple to lie in ruins?” 5 Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: (I)“Consider your ways!
6 “You have (J)sown much, and bring in little;
You eat, but do not have enough;
You drink, but you are not filled with drink;
You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm;
And (K)he who earns wages,
Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”
7 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways! 8 Go up to the (L)mountains and bring wood and build the [b]temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the Lord. 9 (M)“You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, (N)I blew it away. Why?” says the Lord of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house. 10 Therefore (O)the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit. 11 For I (P)called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on (Q)all the labor of your hands.”
The People’s Obedience
12 (R)Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the Lord. 13 Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, spoke the Lord’s message to the people, saying, (S)“I am with you, says the Lord.” 14 So (T)the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, (U)governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; (V)and they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.
