The Command to Rebuild the Temple

1 ^(A)In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to ^(B)Zerubbabel the son of ^(C)Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to ^(D)Joshua the son of ^(E)Jehozadak, the high priest: ² “Thus says the Lord of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the Lord.” ³ Then the word of the Lord came ^(F)by the hand of Haggai the prophet, ^4 (G)“Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while ^(H)this house lies in ruins? ⁵ Now, therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: ^(I)Consider your ways. ^6 (J)You have sown much, and harvested little. ^(K)You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who ^(L)earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.

⁷ “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ^(M)Consider your ways. ⁸ Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that ^(N)I may take pleasure in it and that ^(O)I may be glorified, says the Lord. ^9 (P)You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, ^(Q)I blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house ^(R)that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. ¹⁰ Therefore ^(S)the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. ¹¹ And ^(T)I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on ^(U)the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and ^(V)on all their labors.”

The People Obey the Lord

^12 (W)Then ^(X)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and ^(Y)Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all ^(Z)the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord. ¹³ Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke to the people with the Lord's message, ^(AA)“I am with you, declares the Lord.” ¹⁴ And ^(AB)the Lord stirred up the spirit of ^(AC)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of ^(AD)Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all ^(AE)the remnant of the people. And they came and ^(AF)worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, ^15 (AG)on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

To the Church in Thyatira

¹⁸ “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, ^(A)who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

^19 (B)“‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. ²⁰ But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman ^(C)Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants ^(D)to practice sexual immorality and ^(E)to eat food sacrificed to idols. ²¹ I gave her time to repent, but ^(F)she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. ²² Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, ²³ and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he ^(G)who searches mind and heart, and ^(H)I will give to each of you according to your works. ²⁴ But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call ^(I)the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I ^(J)do not lay on you any other burden. ²⁵ Only hold fast ^(K)what you have until I come. ^26 (L)The one who conquers and who keeps my works ^(M)until the end, ^(N)to him I will give authority over the nations, ²⁷ and ^(O)he will ^(P)rule^[a] them with a rod of iron, ^(Q)as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. ²⁸ And I will give him ^(R)the morning star. ^29 (S)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

^27 (A)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like ^(B)whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and ^(C)all uncleanness. ²⁸ So you also ^(D)outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of ^(E)hypocrisy and lawlessness.

^29 (F)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, ³⁰ saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ ³¹ Thus you witness against yourselves that you are ^(G)sons of those who murdered the prophets. ^32 (H)Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. ³³ You serpents, ^(I)you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to ^(J)hell? ^34 (K)Therefore ^(L)I send you ^(M)prophets and wise men and ^(N)scribes, ^(O)some of whom you will kill and crucify, and ^(P)some you will ^(Q)flog in your synagogues and ^(R)persecute from town to town, ³⁵ so that on you may come all ^(S)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous ^(T)Abel to the blood of ^(U)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,^[a] whom you murdered between ^(V)the sanctuary and ^(W)the altar. ³⁶ Truly, I say to you, ^(X)all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

^37 (Y)“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that ^(Z)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have ^(AA)gathered ^(AB)your children together ^(AC)as a hen gathers her brood ^(AD)under her wings, and ^(AE)you were not willing! ³⁸ See, ^(AF)your house is left to you desolate. ³⁹ For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ^(AG)‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
