Exhortación a edificar el templo
1 El día primero del mes sexto del año segundo del rey Darío, la palabra del Señor vino por medio del profeta Hageo(A) a Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, gobernador de Judá, y a Josué hijo de Josadac, sumo sacerdote. Y dijo:
2 «Así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos: Este pueblo dice: “Todavía no es tiempo de que la casa del Señor sea reedificada.”»
3 Entonces la palabra del Señor vino por medio del profeta Hageo, y dijo:
4 «¿Acaso sí es tiempo de que ustedes habiten en sus casas artesonadas, y de que esta casa esté desierta? 5 Pues así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos: “Piensen bien lo que hacen. 6 Ustedes siembran mucho, y recogen poco; comen, y no se sacian; beben, y no quedan satisfechos; se visten, y no entran en calor; y los que trabajan por un jornal lo reciben en saco roto.”
7 »Así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos: “Piensen en lo que hacen. 8 Vayan al monte, y traigan madera, y reconstruyan mi casa. Yo pondré en ella mi beneplácito, y seré glorificado.” Yo, el Señor, lo he dicho.
9 »Ustedes buscan mucho, y encuentran poco. Lo que ustedes guardan en su casa, yo de un soplo lo disipo. ¿Y por qué? Porque mi casa está desierta, mientras cada uno de ustedes corre a su propia casa.
—Palabra del Señor de los ejércitos.
10 »Por culpa de ustedes los cielos han retenido la lluvia, y la tierra se niega a dar sus frutos. 11 Yo hice venir la sequía sobre esta tierra, sobre los montes y el trigo, sobre el vino y el aceite, sobre hombres y animales, sobre todo los productos de la tierra y sobre todo trabajo manual.»
12 Tanto Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel como Josué hijo de Josadac, sumo sacerdote, lo mismo que el resto del pueblo, oyeron la voz del Señor su Dios y las palabras del profeta Hageo, tal y como el Señor su Dios le había ordenado decir, y todo el pueblo tuvo temor delante del Señor. 13 Entonces Hageo habló con el pueblo por mandato del Señor, y como enviado suyo dijo: «Yo estoy con ustedes.»

14 El Señor despertó el espíritu de Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, que era gobernador de Judá, y el espíritu de Josué hijo de Josadac, que era sumo sacerdote, lo mismo que el espíritu del resto del pueblo, y todos ellos acudieron a trabajar en la casa de su Dios, el Señor de los ejércitos. 15 Era el día veinticuatro del mes sexto, del año segundo del rey Darío.

Primer mensaje: Exhortación a reedificar el templo
1 El día primero del mes sexto del segundo año del rey Darío, vino palabra del Señor por medio del profeta Hageo a Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel, gobernador de Judá, y al sumo sacerdote Josué, hijo de Josadac: 2 «Así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos: “Este pueblo afirma que todavía no ha llegado el tiempo para reconstruir el Templo del Señor”».
3 También vino esta palabra del Señor por medio del profeta Hageo: 4 «¿Acaso es el tiempo para vivir en casas lujosas, mientras esta casa está en ruinas?».
5 Así dice ahora el Señor de los Ejércitos: «¡Reflexionen sobre su proceder! 6 Ustedes siembran mucho, pero cosechan poco; comen, pero no quedan satisfechos; beben, pero no llegan a saciarse; se visten, pero no logran calentarse; y al jornalero se le va su salario como por saco roto».
7 Así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos: «¡Reflexionen sobre su proceder! 8 Vayan ustedes al monte, traigan madera y reconstruyan mi casa. Yo veré su reconstrucción con gusto, y manifestaré mi gloria —dice el Señor. 9 Ustedes esperan mucho, pero cosechan poco; lo que almacenan en su casa, yo lo disipo de un soplo. ¿Por qué? ¡Porque mi casa está en ruinas, mientras ustedes solo se ocupan de la suya!», afirma el Señor de los Ejércitos. 10 «Por eso, por culpa de ustedes, los cielos retuvieron el rocío y la tierra se negó a dar sus frutos. 11 Yo hice venir una sequía sobre los campos y las montañas, sobre el grano y el vino nuevo, sobre el aceite de oliva y el fruto de la tierra, sobre los animales, las personas y sobre toda la obra de sus manos».
12 Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel, el sumo sacerdote Josué, hijo de Josadac, y todo el resto del pueblo obedecieron al Señor su Dios. Acataron las palabras del profeta Hageo, a quien el Señor su Dios había enviado. Y el pueblo sintió temor en la presencia del Señor. 13 Entonces Hageo, su mensajero, comunicó este mensaje del Señor al pueblo: «Yo estoy con ustedes. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo». 14 Y el Señor inquietó el espíritu de Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel, gobernador de Judá, y el del sumo sacerdote Josué, hijo de Josadac; también el espíritu del resto del pueblo. Así que vinieron y empezaron a trabajar en la casa de su Dios, el Señor de los Ejércitos. 15 Era el día veinticuatro del mes sexto del segundo año del rey Darío.

1 En el año segundo del gobierno del rey Darío, el día primero del sexto mes, el Señor, por medio del profeta Hageo, se dirigió al gobernador de Judá, Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel, y al jefe de los sacerdotes, Josué, hijo de Josadac.
2-3 Y esto es lo que dijo el Señor todopoderoso por medio del profeta: «Esta gente dice que todavía no es tiempo de reconstruir mi templo. 4 ¿Y acaso para ustedes sí es tiempo de vivir en casas lujosas, mientras que mi templo está en ruinas? 5 Yo, el Señor todopoderoso, les digo que piensen bien en su conducta. 6 Ustedes siembran mucho, pero cosechan poco; comen, pero no se sienten satisfechos; beben, pero se quedan con sed; se abrigan, pero no entran en calor; y el que trabaja a jornal, echa su salario en saco roto. 7 Yo, el Señor todopoderoso, les digo que piensen bien en su conducta. 8 Vayan a las montañas, traigan madera y construyan de nuevo el templo. Yo estaré allí contento, y mostraré mi gloria. 9 Ustedes buscan mucho, pero encuentran poco; y lo que guardan en su casa, yo me lo llevo de un soplo. ¿Por qué? Pues porque mi casa está en ruinas, mientras que ustedes sólo se preocupan de sus propias casas. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo. 10 Por eso no cae para ustedes la lluvia, ni la tierra les da sus productos. 11 Yo fui quien trajo la sequía sobre los campos y sobre los montes, sobre el trigo, los viñedos y los olivares, sobre las cosechas del campo, sobre los hombres y los animales, y sobre todas sus labores.»
12 Zorobabel, Josué y el resto de la gente sintieron miedo cuando oyeron lo que el Señor les decía por medio del profeta Hageo, esto es, lo que Dios el Señor le había encargado que dijera. 13 Entonces Hageo, el mensajero del Señor, les habló en nombre de Dios, diciéndoles: «El Señor dice: “Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo: Yo estoy con ustedes.”»
14-15 De esta manera animó el Señor a Zorobabel, gobernador de Judá, a Josué, jefe de los sacerdotes, y al resto de la gente, y el día veinticuatro del sexto mes del año segundo del reinado de Darío empezaron a reconstruir el templo de su Dios, el Señor todopoderoso.

A Call to Build the House of the Lord
1 In the second year of King Darius,(A) on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai(B) to Zerubbabel(C) son of Shealtiel, governor(D) of Judah, and to Joshua(E) son of Jozadak,[a](F) the high priest:(G)
2 This is what the Lord Almighty(H) says: “These people(I) say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.(J)’”
3 Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:(K) 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses,(L) while this house remains a ruin?(M)”
5 Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought(N) to your ways. 6 You have planted much, but harvested little.(O) You eat, but never have enough.(P) You drink, but never have your fill.(Q) You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages,(R) only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”
7 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought(S) to your ways. 8 Go up into the mountains and bring down timber(T) and build my house, so that I may take pleasure(U) in it and be honored,(V)” says the Lord. 9 “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little.(W) What you brought home, I blew(X) away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin,(Y) while each of you is busy with your own house. 10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld(Z) their dew(AA) and the earth its crops.(AB) 11 I called for a drought(AC) on the fields and the mountains,(AD) on the grain, the new wine,(AE) the olive oil(AF) and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.(AG)”
12 Then Zerubbabel(AH) son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant(AI) of the people obeyed(AJ) the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared(AK) the Lord.
13 Then Haggai,(AL) the Lord’s messenger,(AM) gave this message of the Lord to the people: “I am with(AN) you,” declares the Lord. 14 So the Lord stirred up(AO) the spirit of Zerubbabel(AP) son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak,(AQ) the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant(AR) of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month.(AS)

2 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the Lord's house should be built.
3 Then came the word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet, saying,
4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?
5 Now therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways.
6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.
7 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways.
8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the Lord.
9 Ye looked for much, and, lo it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the Lord of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.
10 Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.
11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.
12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the Lord.
13 Then spake Haggai the Lord's messenger in the Lord's message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the Lord.
14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,
15 In the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
