The Trumpets

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets(D) prepared to sound them.

The first angel(E) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(F) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(G) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(H)

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(I) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(J) of the sea turned into blood,(K) a third(L) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(M) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(N) 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third(O) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(P)

I looked, and there before me was a white horse!(A) Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown,(B) and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.(C)

When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature(D) say, “Come!” Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.(E) Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth(F) and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature(G) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse!(H) Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures,(I) saying, “Two pounds[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,[b] and six pounds[c] of barley for a day’s wages,[d](J) and do not damage(K) the oil and the wine!”

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature(L) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!(M) Its rider was named Death, and Hades(N) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.(O)

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under(P) the altar(Q) the souls of those who had been slain(R) because of the word of God(S) and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long,(T) Sovereign Lord,(U) holy and true,(V) until you judge the inhabitants of the earth(W) and avenge our blood?”(X) 11 Then each of them was given a white robe,(Y) and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[e] were killed just as they had been.(Z)

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake.(AA) The sun turned black(AB) like sackcloth(AC) made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth,(AD) as figs drop from a fig tree(AE) when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up,(AF) and every mountain and island was removed from its place.(AG)

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free,(AH) hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.(AI) 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us(AJ) and hide us[f] from the face of him who sits on the throne(AK) and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day(AL) of their[g] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”(AM)
