¹⁴ Then Haggai answered and said, ^(A)“So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the Lord, and so with every work of their hands. And what they offer there is unclean.

^15 (A)To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and ^(B)unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both ^(C)their minds and their consciences are defiled.

^4 (A)“Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while ^(B)this house lies in ruins? ⁵ Now, therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: ^(C)Consider your ways. ^6 (D)You have sown much, and harvested little. ^(E)You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who ^(F)earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.

⁷ “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ^(G)Consider your ways. ⁸ Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that ^(H)I may take pleasure in it and that ^(I)I may be glorified, says the Lord. ^9 (J)You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, ^(K)I blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house ^(L)that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. ¹⁰ Therefore ^(M)the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. ¹¹ And ^(N)I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on ^(O)the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and ^(P)on all their labors.”

²³ save others by ^(A)snatching them out of ^(B)the fire; to others show mercy ^(C)with fear, hating even ^(D)the garment^[a] stained by the flesh.
