Then the word of the Lord came to me: “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation(H) of this temple; his hands will also complete it.(I) Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me(J) to you.

10 “Who dares despise the day(K) of small things,(L) since the seven eyes(M) of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone[a] in the hand of Zerubbabel?”(N)

A Call to Return to the Lord

In the eighth month of the second year of Darius,(N) the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah(O) son of Berekiah,(P) the son of Iddo:(Q)

But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord. ‘Be strong,(A) Joshua son of Jozadak,(B) the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with(C) you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.

At that time Tattenai,(H) governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai(I) and their associates went to them and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?”(J)

they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said, “Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon(A) king of Assyria, who brought us here.”(B)
