3 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, set to Shigionoth.
2 O Jehovah, I have heard [a]the report of thee, and [b]am afraid:
O Jehovah, revive thy work in the midst of the years;
In the midst of the years make it known;
In wrath remember mercy.
3 God [c]came from Teman,
And the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah
His glory covered the heavens,
And the earth was full of his praise.
4 And his brightness was as the light;
He had [d]rays coming forth [e]from his hand;
And there was the hiding of his power.
5 Before him went the pestilence,
And [f]fiery bolts went forth at his feet.
6 He stood, and [g]measured the earth;
He beheld, and drove asunder the nations;
And the eternal mountains were scattered;
The everlasting hills did bow;
[h]His goings were as of old.
7 I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction;
The curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.
8 Was Jehovah displeased with the rivers?
Was thine anger against the rivers,
Or thy wrath against the sea,
That thou didst ride upon thy horses,
Upon thy chariots of salvation?
9 Thy bow was made quite bare;
[i]The oaths to the tribes were a sure word. Selah
Thou didst cleave the earth with rivers.
10 The mountains saw thee, and [j]were afraid;
The tempest of waters passed by;
The deep uttered its voice,
And lifted up its hands on high.
11 The sun and moon stood still in their habitation,
At the light of thine arrows as they went,
At the shining of thy glittering spear.
12 Thou didst march through the land in indignation;
Thou didst thresh the nations in anger.
13 Thou [k]wentest forth for the salvation of thy people,
[l]For the salvation of thine anointed;
[m]Thou [n]woundest the head out of the house of the wicked man,
Laying bare the foundation even unto the neck. Selah
14 Thou [o]didst pierce with his own staves the head of his [p]warriors:
They came as a whirlwind to scatter me;
Their rejoicing was as to devour the poor secretly.
15 Thou [q]didst tread the sea with thy horses,
The [r]heap of mighty waters.
16 I heard, and my body trembled,
My lips quivered at the voice;
Rottenness entereth into my bones, and I tremble in my place;
Because I must wait quietly for the day of trouble,
[s]For the coming up of the people that invadeth us.
17 For though the fig-tree shall not flourish,
Neither shall fruit be in the vines;
The labor of the olive shall fail,
And the fields shall yield no food;
The flock shall be cut off from the fold,
And there shall be no herd in the stalls:
18 Yet I will rejoice in Jehovah,
I will joy in the God of my salvation.
19 Jehovah, the Lord, is my strength;
And he maketh my feet like hinds’ feet,
And will make me to walk upon my high places.

Habakkuk's Prayer
3 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth.
2 O Lord, (A)I have heard the report of you,
and (B)your work, O Lord, do I fear.
In the midst of the years (C)revive it;
in the midst of the years make it known;
(D)in wrath remember mercy.
3 God came from (E)Teman,
(F)and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah
His splendor covered the heavens,
and the earth was full of his praise.
4 (G)His brightness was like the light;
rays flashed from his hand;
and there he veiled his power.
5 (H)Before him went pestilence,
and plague followed (I)at his heels.[a]
6 He stood (J)and measured the earth;
he looked and shook the nations;
then the (K)eternal mountains (L)were scattered;
the everlasting hills sank low.
His were (M)the everlasting ways.
7 I saw the tents of (N)Cushan in affliction;
(O)the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.
8 (P)Was your wrath against the rivers, O Lord?
Was your anger against the rivers,
(Q)or your indignation against the sea,
(R)when you rode on your horses,
(S)on your chariot of salvation?
9 You stripped the sheath from your bow,
calling for many arrows.[b] Selah
(T)You split the earth with rivers.
10 (U)The mountains saw you and writhed;
the raging waters swept on;
(V)the deep gave forth its voice;
(W)it lifted its hands on high.
11 (X)The sun and moon stood still in their place
(Y)at the light of your arrows as they sped,
at the flash of your glittering spear.
12 (Z)You marched through the earth in fury;
(AA)you threshed the nations in anger.
13 (AB)You went out for the salvation of your people,
for the salvation of (AC)your anointed.
(AD)You crushed the head of the house of the wicked,
laying him bare from thigh to neck.[c] Selah
14 You pierced with his own arrows the heads of his warriors,
who came like a whirlwind to scatter me,
rejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret.
15 (AE)You trampled the sea with your horses,
the surging of mighty waters.
16 (AF)I hear, and (AG)my body trembles;
my lips quiver at the sound;
(AH)rottenness enters into my bones;
my legs tremble beneath me.
Yet (AI)I will quietly wait for the day of trouble
to come upon people who invade us.
Habakkuk Rejoices in the Lord
17 Though the fig tree should not blossom,
nor fruit be on the vines,
the produce of the olive fail
and the fields yield no food,
the flock be cut off from the fold
and there be no herd in the stalls,
18 (AJ)yet I will rejoice in the Lord;
(AK)I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
19 God, the Lord, is my strength;
(AL)he makes my feet like the deer's;
he makes me (AM)tread on my (AN)high places.

3 Preghiera del profeta Abacuc, in tono di lamentazione.
Preludio Supplica
2 Signore, ho ascoltato il tuo annunzio,
Signore, ho avuto timore della tua opera.
Nel corso degli anni manifestala
falla conoscere nel corso degli anni.
Nello sdegno ricordati di avere clemenza.
Teofania. L'arrivo del Signore
3 Dio viene da Teman, il Santo dal monte Paràn.
La sua maestà ricopre i cieli,
delle sue lodi è piena la terra.
4 Il suo splendore è come la luce,
bagliori di folgore escono dalle sue mani:
là si cela la sua potenza.
5 Davanti a lui avanza la peste,
la febbre ardente segue i suoi passi.
6 Si arresta e scuote la terra,
guarda e fa tremare le genti;
le montagne eterne s'infrangono,
e i colli antichi si abbassano:
i suoi sentieri nei secoli.
7 Ho visto i padiglioni di Cusàn in preda a spavento,
sono agitate le tende di Madian.

8 Forse contro i fiumi, Signore,
contro i fiumi si accende la tua ira
o contro il mare è il tuo furore,
quando tu monti sopra i tuoi cavalli,
sopra i carri della tua vittoria?
9 Tu estrai il tuo arco e ne sazi di saette la corda.
Fai erompere la terra in torrenti;
10 i monti ti vedono e tremano,
un uragano di acque si riversa,
l'abisso fa sentire la sua voce.

11 e la luna resta nella sua dimora,
fuggono al bagliore delle tue saette,
allo splendore folgorante della tua lancia.
12 Sdegnato attraversi la terra,
adirato calpesti le genti.
13 Sei uscito per salvare il tuo popolo,
per salvare il tuo consacrato.
Hai demolito la cima della casa dell'empio,
l'hai scalzata fino alle fondamenta.
14 Con i tuoi dardi hai trafitto il capo dei suoi guerrieri
che irrompevano per disperdermi
con la gioia di chi divora il povero di nascosto.
15 Hai affogato nel mare i suoi cavalli
nella melma di grandi acque.
Conclusione: timore e fede in Dio
16 Ho udito e fremette il mio cuore,
a tal voce tremò il mio labbro,
la carie entra nelle mie ossa
e sotto di me tremano i miei passi.
Sospiro al giorno dell'angoscia
che verrà contro il popolo che ci opprime.
17 Il fico infatti non germoglierà,
nessun prodotto daranno le viti,
cesserà il raccolto dell'olivo,
i campi non daranno più cibo,
i greggi spariranno dagli ovili
e le stalle rimarranno senza buoi.
18 Ma io gioirò nel Signore,
esulterò in Dio mio salvatore.
19 Il Signore Dio è la mia forza,
egli rende i miei piedi come quelli delle cerve
e sulle alture mi fa camminare.

in our time make them known;

and his praise filled the earth.(K)
4 His splendor was like the sunrise;(L)
rays flashed from his hand,
where his power(M) was hidden.
5 Plague(N) went before him;
pestilence followed his steps.
6 He stood, and shook the earth;
he looked, and made the nations tremble.
The ancient mountains crumbled(O)
and the age-old hills(P) collapsed(Q)—
but he marches on forever.(R)
7 I saw the tents of Cushan in distress,
the dwellings of Midian(S) in anguish.(T)
8 Were you angry with the rivers,(U) Lord?
Was your wrath against the streams?
Did you rage against the sea(V)
when you rode your horses
and your chariots to victory?(W)
9 You uncovered your bow,
you called for many arrows.(X)
You split the earth with rivers;

Torrents of water swept by;
the deep roared(Z)
and lifted its waves(AA) on high.
11 Sun and moon stood still(AB) in the heavens
at the glint of your flying arrows,(AC)
at the lightning(AD) of your flashing spear.
12 In wrath you strode through the earth
and in anger you threshed(AE) the nations.
13 You came out(AF) to deliver(AG) your people,
to save your anointed(AH) one.
You crushed(AI) the leader of the land of wickedness,
you stripped him from head to foot.
14 With his own spear you pierced his head
when his warriors stormed out to scatter us,(AJ)
gloating as though about to devour
the wretched(AK) who were in hiding.
15 You trampled the sea(AL) with your horses,
churning the great waters.(AM)
16 I heard and my heart pounded,
my lips quivered at the sound;
decay crept into my bones,
and my legs trembled.(AN)
Yet I will wait patiently(AO) for the day of calamity
to come on the nation invading us.
17 Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,(AP)
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,(AQ)
18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,(AR)
I will be joyful in God my Savior.(AS)
19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength;(AT)
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights.(AU)
