God Answers the Prophet

I will (A)stand at my guard post
And station myself on the watchtower;
And I will (B)keep watch to see (C)what He will say to me,
And how I may reply [a]when I am reprimanded.
Then the Lord answered me and said,
(D)Write down the vision
And inscribe it clearly on tablets,
So that one who [b]reads it may run.
For the vision is yet for the (E)appointed time;
It [c]hurries toward the goal and it will not [d]fail.
Though it delays, (F)wait for it;
For it will certainly come, it (G)will not delay long.

“Behold, as for the (H)impudent one,
His soul is not right within him;
But the (I)righteous one will live by his [e]faith.
Furthermore, (J)wine betrays an (K)arrogant man,
So that he does not (L)achieve his objective.
He (M)enlarges his appetite like Sheol,
And he is like death, never satisfied.
He also gathers to himself all the nations
And collects to himself all the peoples.

“Will all of these not (N)take up a song of ridicule against him,
Even a saying and insinuations against him
And say, ‘(O)Woe to him who increases what is not his—
For how long—
And makes himself [f]rich with debts!’
Will [g]your creditors not (P)rise up suddenly,
And those who [h]collect from you awaken?
Indeed, you will become plunder for them.
Since you have (Q)looted many nations,
All the rest of the peoples will loot you—
Because of human bloodshed and violence [i]done to the land,
To the town and all its inhabitants.

“Woe to him who makes (R)evil profit for his household,
To (S)put his nest on high,
To be saved from the hand of catastrophe!
10 You have planned a (T)shameful thing for your house
By bringing many peoples to an end;
So you are (U)sinning against yourself.
11 For the (V)stone will cry out from the wall,
And the rafter will answer it from the [j]framework.

12 “Woe to him who (W)builds a city with bloodshed,
And founds a town with [k]violence!
13 Is it not indeed from the Lord of armies
That peoples (X)labor merely for fire,
And nations become weary for nothing?
14 For the earth will be (Y)filled
With the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,
As the waters cover the sea.

15 “Woe to him who makes his neighbor drink;
[l]To you who mix in your venom even to make your neighbors drunk,
So as to look at their genitalia!
16 You will be filled with disgrace rather than honor.
(Z)Drink, you yourself, and [m]expose your own foreskin!
The (AA)cup in the Lords right hand will come around to you,
And (AB)utter disgrace will come upon your glory.
17 For the (AC)violence [n]done to Lebanon will [o]overwhelm you,
And the devastation of its animals [p]by which you terrified them,
(AD)Because of human bloodshed and (AE)violence [q]done to the land,
To the town and all its inhabitants.

18 “What (AF)benefit is a carved image when its maker has carved it,
Or a cast metal image, a (AG)teacher of falsehood?
For its maker (AH)trusts in his own handiwork
When he fashions speechless idols.
19 Woe to him who (AI)says to a piece of wood, ‘(AJ)Awake!’
To a mute stone, ‘Arise!’
That is your teacher?
Behold, it is overlaid with (AK)gold and silver,
Yet there is (AL)no breath at all inside it.
20 But the (AM)Lord is in His holy temple.

I will take my place at the watchtower.
    I will stand at my post and watch.
I will watch and see what He says to me.
    I need to think about how I should respond to Him
When He gets back to me with His answer.

Eternal One (to Habakkuk): Write down this vision.
        Write it clearly on tablets, so that anyone who reads it may run.
    For the vision points ahead to a time I have appointed;
        it testifies regarding the end, and it will not lie.
    Even if there is a delay, wait for it.
        It is coming and will come without delay.[a]

So I wrote, “Look how pompous he is!
    Something is not right in his soul; he is not honest and just.
But the righteous one will live by his faithfulness.”[b]

Indeed, wine betrays the proud man who is always restless.
    He has a big appetite; it is like the deep, dark pit of the dead.
Like death, he is never satisfied.
    He gathers all the nations to himself and collects all the people for his own purposes.

Will not all these nations raise up their litany of insults?
    Will they not provoke him with their taunts and mockery, saying,
“Woe to him who hoards what is not his!
    How long can he profit from extortion and debt?”
Will not your creditors suddenly rise up against you?
    One day they will wake up and will have had enough.
Indeed, you will be their spoil!
Why? Because you have plundered many nations,
    now all who remain will come and plunder you—
Because you have made bloody and violent raids over the earth
    and ransacked many peoples and their villages.

Woe to him who builds his house on such evil profits,
    who puts his nest up high, safe for the future, safe from disaster!
10 You don’t realize it, but by cutting down so many peoples,
    you have brought shame on your house;
You have sinned against your own soul.
11 For the stone in the wall will cry out against you;
    the wooden rafter[c] will answer from the ceiling.

12 Woe to him who builds a city on bloodshed
    and who establishes a town by injustice!
13 Look! Is it not because of the Eternal, the Commander of heavenly armies,
    that all the people work for is consumed in fire
And that all the nations produce comes to nothing?
14 For as the waters cover the sea,
    the whole earth will be filled with the knowledge
That the Eternal is glorious and powerful.

15 Woe to you who gives his neighbors a drink,
    who keeps filling their cup with your anger and malice
To intoxicate them so you can uncover their shame
    and look at their nakedness!
16 Instead of honor, you are going to have your fill of shame.
    Now drink up and expose your own uncircumcised nakedness, your lack of God’s mark.
The cup in the Eternal’s right hand will come around to you,
    and disgrace will eclipse your current glory.
17 For the violence done against Lebanon will now overtake you;
    the terror you showed the animals in turn will terrorize you.
Because you shed blood and wrought violence in the earth,
    you have destroyed cities and all their inhabitants.

18 What use is an idol shaped by its maker?
    It is nothing but an image cast in metal; it teaches deception.
For a foolish idol-maker puts faith in his own creation,
    a god that cannot speak.
19 Woe to him who says to a block of wood, “Wake up!”
    or to a silent stone, “Arise!”
Are inanimate objects your teachers?
    Look, it may be covered in gold and silver,
But there is no breath of life inside.

20 But the Eternal One is in His holy temple.
    Let all the earth keep silent in His presence.

Full of Self, but Soul-Empty

2-3 And then God answered: “Write this.
    Write what you see.
Write it out in big block letters
    so that it can be read on the run.
This vision-message is a witness
    pointing to what’s coming.
It aches for the coming—it can hardly wait!
    And it doesn’t lie.
If it seems slow in coming, wait.
    It’s on its way. It will come right on time.

“Look at that man, bloated by self-importance—
    full of himself but soul-empty.
But the person in right standing before God
    through loyal and steady believing
    is fully alive, really alive.

5-6 “Note well: Money deceives.
    The arrogant rich don’t last.
They are more hungry for wealth
    than the grave is for cadavers.
Like death, they always want more,
    but the ‘more’ they get is dead bodies.
They are cemeteries filled with dead nations,
    graveyards filled with corpses.
Don’t give people like this a second thought.
    Soon the whole world will be taunting them:

6-8 “‘Who do you think you are—
    getting rich by stealing and extortion?
How long do you think
    you can get away with this?’
Indeed, how long before your victims wake up,
    stand up and make you the victim?
You’ve plundered nation after nation.
    Now you’ll get a taste of your own medicine.
All the survivors are out to plunder you,
    a payback for all your murders and massacres.

9-11 “Who do you think you are—
    recklessly grabbing and looting,
Living it up, acting like king of the mountain,
    acting above it all, above trials and troubles?
You’ve engineered the ruin of your own house.
    In ruining others you’ve ruined yourself.
You’ve undermined your foundations,
    rotted out your own soul.
The bricks of your house will speak up and accuse you.
    The woodwork will step forward with evidence.

12-14 “Who do you think you are—
    building a town by murder, a city with crime?
Don’t you know that God-of-the-Angel-Armies
    makes sure nothing comes of that but ashes,
Makes sure the harder you work
    at that kind of thing, the less you are?
Meanwhile the earth fills up
    with awareness of God’s glory
    as the waters cover the sea.

15-17 “Who do you think you are—
    inviting your neighbors to your drunken parties,
Giving them too much to drink,
    roping them into your sexual orgies?
You thought you were having the time of your life.
    Wrong! It’s a time of disgrace.
All the time you were drinking,
    you were drinking from the cup of God’s wrath.
You’ll wake up holding your throbbing head, hung over—
    hung over from Lebanon violence,
Hung over from animal massacres,
    hung over from murder and mayhem,
From multiple violations
    of place and people.

18-19 “What’s the use of a carved god
    so skillfully carved by its sculptor?
What good is a fancy cast god
    when all it tells is lies?
What sense does it make to be a pious god-maker
    who makes gods that can’t even talk?
Who do you think you are—
    saying to a stick of wood, ‘Wake up,’
Or to a dumb stone, ‘Get up’?
    Can they teach you anything about anything?
There’s nothing to them but surface.
    There’s nothing on the inside.

20 “But oh! God is in his holy Temple!
    Quiet everyone—a holy silence. Listen!”

I will stand at my watch post;

I will remain stationed on the city wall.[a]
I will keep watching so I can see what he says to me
and can know[b] how I should answer
when he counters my argument.[c]

The Lord Assures Habakkuk

The Lord responded:[d]

“Write down this message.[e]
Record it legibly on tablets
so the one who announces[f] it may read it easily.[g]
For the message is a witness to what is decreed;[h]
it gives reliable testimony about how matters will turn out.[i]
Even if the message[j] is not fulfilled right away, wait patiently;[k]
for it will certainly come to pass—it will not arrive late.
Look, the one whose desires are not upright will faint from exhaustion,[l]
but the person of integrity[m] will live[n] because of his faithfulness.[o]
Indeed, wine will betray the proud, restless man![p]
His appetite[q] is as big as Sheol’s;[r]
like death, he is never satisfied.
He gathers[s] all the nations;
he seizes[t] all peoples.

The Proud Babylonians Are as Good as Dead

“But all these nations will someday taunt him[u]
and ridicule him with proverbial sayings:[v]
‘Woe to the one who accumulates[w] what does not belong to him
(How long will this go on?)[x]
he who gets rich by extortion!’[y]
Your creditors will suddenly attack;[z]
those who terrify you will spring into action,[aa]
and they will rob you.[ab]
Because you robbed many countries,[ac]
all who are left among the nations[ad] will rob you.
You have shed human blood
and committed violent acts against lands, cities,[ae] and those who live in them.
The one who builds his house by unjust gain is as good as dead.[af]

He does this so he can build his nest way up high
and escape the clutches of disaster.[ag]
10 Your schemes will bring shame to your house.
Because you destroyed many nations, you will self-destruct.[ah]
11 For the stones in the walls will cry out,
and the wooden rafters will answer back.[ai]
12 Woe to the one who builds a city by bloodshed—

he who starts[aj] a town by unjust deeds.
13 Be sure of this! The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has decreed:
The nations’ efforts will go up in smoke;
their exhausting work will be for nothing.[ak]
14 For recognition of the Lord’s sovereign majesty will fill the earth
just as the waters fill up the sea.[al]

15 “Woe to you who force your neighbor to drink wine[am]

you who make others intoxicated
by forcing them to drink from the bowl of your furious anger[an]
so you can look at their naked bodies.[ao]
16 But you will become drunk[ap] with shame, not majesty.[aq]
Now it is your turn to drink and expose your uncircumcised foreskin![ar]
The cup of wine in the Lord’s right hand[as] is coming to you,
and disgrace will replace your majestic glory!
17 For you will pay in full for your violent acts against Lebanon;[at]
terrifying judgment will come upon you
because of the way you destroyed the wild animals living there.[au]
You have shed human blood
and committed violent acts against lands, cities, and those who live in them.
18 What good[av] is an idol? Why would a craftsman make it?[aw]
What good is a metal image that gives misleading oracles?[ax]
Why would its creator place his trust in it[ay]
and make[az] such mute, worthless things?
19 Woe to the one who says to wood, ‘Wake up!’—
he who says[ba] to speechless stone, ‘Awake!’
Can it give reliable guidance?[bb]
It is overlaid with gold and silver;
it has no life’s breath inside it.

The present translation assumes an emendation to a Pual form of the verb עָלַף (ʿalaf, “be faint, exhausted”). (See its use in the Pual in Isa 51:20, and in the Hitpael in Amos 8:13 and Jonah 4:8.) In the antithetical parallelism of the verse, it corresponds to חָיָה (khayah, “live”). The phrase לֹא יָשְׁרָה נַפְשׁוֹ בּוֹ (loʾ yasherah nafsho bo), literally, “not upright his desire within him,” is taken as a substantival clause that contrasts with צַדִּיק (tsaddiq, “the righteous one”) and serves as the subject of the preceding verb. Here נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh) is understood in the sense of “desire” (see BDB 660-61 s.v. נֶפֶשׁ for a list of passages where the word carries this sense).

When used of human character and conduct it carries the notion of “honesty, integrity, reliability, faithfulness.” The antecedent of the suffix has been understood in different ways. It could refer to God’s faithfulness, but in this case one would expect a first person suffix (the original form of the LXX has “my faithfulness” here). Others understand the “vision” to be the antecedent. In this case the reliability of the prophecy is in view. For a statement of this view, see J. J. M. Roberts, Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah (OTL), 111-12. The present translation assumes that the preceding word “[the person of] integrity” is the antecedent. In this case the Lord is assuring Habakkuk that those who are truly innocent will be preserved through the coming oppression and judgment by their godly lifestyle, for God ultimately rewards this type of conduct. In contrast to these innocent people, those with impure desires (epitomized by the greedy Babylonians; see v. 5) will not be able to withstand God’s judgment (v. 4a).
  16. Habakkuk 2:5 tn Heb “Indeed wine betrays a proud man and he does not dwell.” The meaning of the last verb, “dwell,” is uncertain. Many take it as a denominative of the noun נָוָה (navah, “dwelling place”). In this case it would carry the idea, “he does not settle down,” and would picture the drunkard as restless (cf. NIV “never at rest”; NASB “does not stay at home”). Some relate the verb to an Arabic cognate and translate the phrase as “he will not succeed, reach his goal.”sn The Babylonian tyrant is the proud, restless man described in this line as the last line of the verse, with its reference to the conquest of the nations, makes clear. Wine is probably a metaphor for imperialistic success. The more success the Babylonians experience, the more greedy they become just as a drunkard wants more and more wine to satisfy his thirst. But eventually this greed will lead to their downfall, for God will not tolerate such imperialism and will judge the Babylonians appropriately (vv. 6-20).
  17. Habakkuk 2:5 tn Heb “who opens wide like Sheol his throat.” Here נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh) is understood in a physical sense, meaning “throat,” which in turn is figurative for the appetite. See H. W. Wolff, Anthropology of the Old Testament, 11-12.

The translation above follows the LXX and assumes a reading יְחִתֶּךָ (yekhittekha, “[the violence against the animals] will terrify you”; cf. NRSV “the destruction of the animals will terrify you”; NIV “and your destruction of animals will terrify you”). In this case the verb is a Hiphil imperfect third masculine singular with second masculine singular suffix (the antecedent being Babylon). This provides better symmetry with the preceding line, where Babylon’s violence is the subject of the verb “cover.” sn The language may anticipate Nebuchadnezzar’s utilization of trees from the Lebanon forest in building projects. Lebanon and its animals probably represent the western Palestinian states conquered by the Babylonians.
