Woe to the Chaldeans

Shall not all these (A)take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say,

(B)“Woe to him (C)who heaps up what is not his own—
    for (D)how long?—
    and (E)loads himself with pledges!”
(F)Will not your debtors suddenly arise,
    and those awake who will make you tremble?
    Then you will be spoil for them.
(G)Because you have plundered many nations,
    all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you,
(H)for the blood of man and (I)violence to the earth,
    to cities and all who dwell in them.

(J)“Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house,
    (K)to (L)set his nest on high,
    to be safe from the reach of harm!
10 You have devised shame for your house
    (M)by cutting off many peoples;
    you have forfeited your life.
11 For (N)the stone will cry out from the wall,
    and the beam from the woodwork respond.

12 (O)“Woe to him (P)who builds a town with blood
    and founds a city on iniquity!
13 Behold, is it not from the Lord of hosts
    that (Q)peoples labor merely for fire,
    and nations weary themselves for nothing?
14 (R)For the earth will be filled
    with the knowledge of (S)the glory of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

15 (T)“Woe to him (U)who makes his neighbors drink—
    you pour out your wrath and make them drunk,
    in order to gaze (V)at their nakedness!
16 You will have your fill (W)of shame instead of glory.
    (X)Drink, yourself, and show your uncircumcision!
(Y)The cup in the Lord's right hand
    will come around to you,
    and (Z)utter shame will come upon your glory!
17 (AA)The violence (AB)done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
    as will the destruction of the beasts that terrified them,
(AC)for the blood of man and violence to the earth,
    to cities and all who dwell in them.

18 (AD)“What profit is an idol
    when its maker has shaped it,
    a metal image, (AE)a teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
    when he makes (AF)speechless idols!
19 (AG)Woe to him (AH)who says to a wooden thing, Awake;
    to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
    and (AI)there is no breath at all in it.
20 But (AJ)the Lord is in his holy temple;
    (AK)let all the earth keep silence before him.”

Habakkuk's Prayer

A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth.

O Lord, (AL)I have heard the report of you,
    and (AM)your work, O Lord, do I fear.
In the midst of the years (AN)revive it;
    in the midst of the years make it known;
    (AO)in wrath remember mercy.
God came from (AP)Teman,
    (AQ)and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah
His splendor covered the heavens,
    and the earth was full of his praise.
(AR)His brightness was like the light;
    rays flashed from his hand;
    and there he veiled his power.
(AS)Before him went pestilence,
    and plague followed (AT)at his heels.[a]
He stood (AU)and measured the earth;
    he looked and shook the nations;
then the (AV)eternal mountains (AW)were scattered;
    the everlasting hills sank low.
    His were (AX)the everlasting ways.
I saw the tents of (AY)Cushan in affliction;
    (AZ)the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.
(BA)Was your wrath against the rivers, O Lord?
    Was your anger against the rivers,
    (BB)or your indignation against the sea,
(BC)when you rode on your horses,
    (BD)on your chariot of salvation?
You stripped the sheath from your bow,
    calling for many arrows.[b] Selah
    (BE)You split the earth with rivers.
10 (BF)The mountains saw you and writhed;
    the raging waters swept on;
(BG)the deep gave forth its voice;
    (BH)it lifted its hands on high.
11 (BI)The sun and moon stood still in their place
    (BJ)at the light of your arrows as they sped,
    at the flash of your glittering spear.
12 (BK)You marched through the earth in fury;
    (BL)you threshed the nations in anger.
13 (BM)You went out for the salvation of your people,
    for the salvation of (BN)your anointed.
(BO)You crushed the head of the house of the wicked,
    laying him bare from thigh to neck.[c] Selah
14 You pierced with his own arrows the heads of his warriors,
    who came like a whirlwind to scatter me,
    rejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret.
15 (BP)You trampled the sea with your horses,
    the surging of mighty waters.

16 (BQ)I hear, and (BR)my body trembles;
    my lips quiver at the sound;
(BS)rottenness enters into my bones;
    my legs tremble beneath me.
Yet (BT)I will quietly wait for the day of trouble
    to come upon people who invade us.

Habakkuk Rejoices in the Lord

17 Though the fig tree should not blossom,
    nor fruit be on the vines,
the produce of the olive fail
    and the fields yield no food,
the flock be cut off from the fold
    and there be no herd in the stalls,
18 (BU)yet I will rejoice in the Lord;
    (BV)I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
19 God, the Lord, is my strength;
    (BW)he makes my feet like the deer's;
    he makes me (BX)tread on my (BY)high places.

(BZ)To the choirmaster: with (CA)stringed[d] instruments.

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When the Lamb opened (A)the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Then I saw the seven angels (B)who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. And another angel came and stood (C)at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with (D)the prayers of all the saints on (E)the golden altar before the throne, and (F)the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. Then the angel took the censer and (G)filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and (H)there were peals of (I)thunder, rumblings,[a] flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

The Seven Trumpets

Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.

The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed (J)hail and (K)fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a (L)third of the earth was burned up, and a third of (M)the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like (N)a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea (O)became blood. A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of (P)the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel blew his trumpet, and (Q)a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on (R)the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood.[b] A third of the waters (S)became wormwood, and many people died from the water, (T)because it had been made bitter.

12 The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of (U)the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night.

13 Then I looked, and I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice as it flew directly overhead, (V)“Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth, at the blasts of the other trumpets that the three angels are about to blow!”

(A)Bow your heavens, O Lord, and come down!
    (B)Touch the mountains so that they smoke!
(C)Flash forth the lightning and scatter them;
    (D)send out your arrows and rout them!
(E)Stretch out your hand from on high;
    (F)rescue me and deliver me from the many waters,
    from the hand (G)of foreigners,
whose mouths speak (H)lies
    and whose right hand is (I)a right hand of falsehood.

I will sing (J)a new song to you, O God;
    upon (K)a ten-stringed harp I will play to you,
10 who gives victory to kings,
    who (L)rescues David his servant from the cruel sword.
11 Rescue me and deliver me
    from the hand (M)of foreigners,
whose mouths speak (N)lies
    and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
