Habakkuk 1
King James Version
1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.
2 O Lord, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save!
3 Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention.
4 Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.
5 Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvelously: for I will work a work in your days which ye will not believe, though it be told you.
6 For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces that are not their's.
7 They are terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves.
8 Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hasteth to eat.
9 They shall come all for violence: their faces shall sup up as the east wind, and they shall gather the captivity as the sand.
10 And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn unto them: they shall deride every strong hold; for they shall heap dust, and take it.
11 Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power unto his god.
12 Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O Lord, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.
13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?
14 And makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them?
15 They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad.
16 Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and burn incense unto their drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their meat plenteous.
17 Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations?

English Standard Version
1 (A)The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw.
Habakkuk's Complaint
2 O Lord, (B)how long shall I cry for help,
and you will not hear?
Or cry to you (C)“Violence!”
and you will not save?
3 (D)Why do you make me see iniquity,
and why do you idly look at wrong?
Destruction (E)and violence are before me;
strife and contention arise.
4 (F)So the law is paralyzed,
and justice never goes forth.
(G)For the wicked surround the righteous;
so justice goes forth perverted.
The Lord's Answer
5 (H)“Look among the nations, and see;
wonder and be astounded.
(I)For I am doing a work in your days
that you would not believe if told.
6 For behold, (J)I am raising up the Chaldeans,
that bitter and hasty nation,
(K)who march through the breadth of the earth,
(L)to seize dwellings not their own.
7 They are dreaded and fearsome;
(M)their justice and dignity go forth from themselves.
8 (N)Their horses are swifter than leopards,
more fierce than (O)the evening wolves;
their horsemen press proudly on.
Their horsemen come from afar;
(P)they fly like an eagle swift to devour.
9 They all come (Q)for violence,
all their faces forward.
They gather captives (R)like sand.
10 At kings they scoff,
and at rulers they laugh.
(S)They laugh at every fortress,
for (T)they pile up earth and take it.
11 Then they sweep by like the wind and go on,
(U)guilty men, (V)whose own might is their god!”
Habakkuk's Second Complaint
12 Are you not (W)from everlasting,
O Lord my God, my Holy One?
(X)We shall not die.
O Lord, (Y)you have ordained them as a judgment,
and you, O (Z)Rock, have established them for reproof.
13 You who are (AA)of purer eyes than to see evil
and cannot look at wrong,
(AB)why do you idly look at traitors
and (AC)remain silent when the wicked swallows up
the man more righteous than he?
14 You make mankind like the fish of the sea,
like crawling things that have no ruler.
15 (AD)He[a] brings all of them up (AE)with a hook;
he drags them out with his net;
he gathers them in his dragnet;
so he rejoices and is glad.
16 (AF)Therefore he sacrifices to his net
and makes offerings to his dragnet;
for by them he lives in luxury,[b]
and his food is rich.
17 Is he then to keep on emptying his net
(AG)and mercilessly killing nations forever?

2 Herre, hur länge
ska jag ropa på hjälp
utan att du hör,
ropa högt till dig över våld
utan att du räddar?
3 Varför låter du mig se ondska,
och hur kan du själv
se på sådant elände?
Fördärv och våld är inför mig,
det uppstår tvister och gräl.
4 (A) Därför blir lagen utan kraft,
och rätten kommer aldrig fram.
Den ogudaktige omringar
den rättfärdige
och rätten förvrängs.
Herrens svar
5 (B) Se er omkring bland hednafolken,
se och häpna, ja, häpna,
för jag gör en gärning i era dagar
som ni inte kommer att tro
när den berättas.[a]
6 Se, jag ska uppväcka kaldeerna[b],
det vilda och snabba folket
som drar ut över jordens vidder
för att ta i besittning
boplatser som inte är deras.
7 De är skrämmande och fruktade,
de avgör själva
vad som är lag och rätt.
8 (C) Deras hästar är snabbare än leoparder
och vildare än stäppvargar[c].
Deras ryttare spränger fram,
de kommer fjärran ifrån,
de flyger likt örnen
som störtar sig över sitt byte.
9 Alla kommer de med våld i sinnet,
stridslystna rycker de fram
och samlar fångar som sand.
10 De gör kungar till åtlöje
och hånar furstar.
De skrattar åt alla befästningar,
de kastar upp jordvallar
och intar dem.
11 Så drar de vidare som vinden,
de fortsätter framåt
och samlar på sig skuld.
Deras egen styrka är deras gud.
Frågor om Guds rättfärdighet
12 (D) Visst har du alltid varit till,
Herre min Gud, min Helige?
Vi ska inte dö!
Herre, till en dom har du satt dem,
till en tillrättavisning
har du berett dem,
du vår klippa.
13 (E) Dina ögon är för rena
för att se på det onda.
Du som inte står ut med
att se någon orätt,
hur kan du se på de trolösa och tiga
när den ogudaktige slukar
den som är mer rättfärdig än han?
14 (F) Du gör människorna
lika fiskarna i havet,
lika kräldjur
som inte har någon herre.
15 De drar upp dem alla med sin krok,
de fångar dem i sitt nät
och samlar dem i sitt garn.
Därför gläder de sig och jublar,
16 därför offrar de åt sitt nät
och tänder rökelse åt sitt garn,
för dessa gör deras andel fet
och deras mat så läcker.
17 Men ska de få vittja sitt nät
och ständigt dräpa folken
utan förskoning?
