Dieu interviendra
3 Prière d’Habaquq le prophète, sur le mode des complaintes[a].
2 O Eternel, j’ai entendu ╵ce que tu viens de proclamer,
et je suis effrayé ╵devant ton œuvre, ô Eternel.
Dans le cours des années, ╵accomplis-la[b] !
Dans le cours des années, ╵fais-la connaître !
Dans ta colère cependant, ╵pense à être clément !
3 Dieu viendra de Témân,
le Saint viendra du mont Parân.
Pause
Sa majesté ╵couvre le ciel,
et sa louange ╵remplit la terre.
4 Il a l’éclat de la lumière,
et, de sa main, ╵jaillissent deux rayons ;
c’est là qu’est le réservoir de sa force.
5 La peste meurtrière ╵chemine devant lui,
et la fièvre brûlante ╵marche à sa suite.
6 S’il vient à s’arrêter, ╵il fait vibrer[c] la terre.
Quand il regarde, ╵il ébranle les peuples,
les montagnes antiques ╵sont disloquées,
et les collines ╵des anciens temps s’effondrent.
Il parcourt à nouveau ╵les antiques sentiers.
7 J’ai vu les tentes de Koushân[d] ╵réduites à néant ;
les abris de Madian ╵tremblaient, épouvantés.
L’Eternel sort pour délivrer son peuple
8 Est-ce contre les fleuves ╵que l’Eternel s’irrite,
est-ce contre les fleuves ╵que ton courroux s’enflamme ?
Est-ce contre la mer ╵que ta fureur s’exerce,
pour que tu viennes ainsi ╵monté sur tes chevaux,
sur tes chars victorieux ?
9 Ton arc est mis à nu,
tes traits sont les serments ╵que tu as prononcés[e].

Tu crevasses la terre, ╵livrant passage aux fleuves.
10 Les montagnes t’ont vu, ╵et elles tremblent.
Des trombes d’eau s’abattent,
l’abîme se met à mugir,
lançant bien haut ses vagues.
11 Le soleil et la lune ╵restent dans leur demeure
devant l’éclat ╵de tes flèches qui partent
et la clarté ╵des éclairs de ta lance.
12 Avec colère, tu parcours la terre,
tu foules les peuples aux pieds ╵dans ton indignation.
13 Oui, tu t’es mis en route ╵pour délivrer ton peuple,
et pour sauver ton roi ╵qui a reçu l’onction.
Tu as décapité ╵la maison du méchant,
et tu l’as démolie ╵de fond en comble.

14 Tu transperces la tête ╵de l’ennemi ╵avec ses propres flèches,
alors qu’il arrivait ╵comme un vent d’ouragan ╵dans le but de nous disperser.
Déjà nos ennemis ╵se réjouissaient,
comptant bien dévorer ╵l’opprimé en secret[f].
15 Tu as lancé ╵tes chevaux dans la mer,
dans le bouillonnement ╵des eaux puissantes.
L’Eternel est ma force
16 J’ai entendu cette nouvelle :
j’en suis tout bouleversé.
Mes lèvres balbutient
et mes os se dissolvent,
je reste là, tremblant.
Puisqu’il me faut attendre sans bouger, ╵le jour où la détresse
fondra sur l’ennemi ╵qui doit nous assaillir.
17 Car le figuier ╵ne bourgeonnera plus,
et il n’y aura plus ╵de raisins dans les vignes,
le fruit de l’olivier ╵trompera les espoirs,
les champs ne produiront ╵plus de pain à manger.
Les moutons et les chèvres ╵disparaîtront de leurs enclos,
et les bovins de leurs étables.
18 Mais moi, c’est à cause de l’Eternel ╵que je veux me réjouir,
j’exulterai de joie ╵à cause du Dieu qui me sauve.
19 L’Eternel, le Seigneur, ╵c’est lui ma force :
il rend mes pieds pareils ╵à ceux des biches,
il me fait cheminer ╵sur les lieux élevés.

Habakkuk prays
3 These are the words that the prophet Habakkuk prayed. He used special music to sing it.
2 Lord, I have heard the report about you.
I see the things that you have done, Lord,
and I respect your power.
Please do great things like that again.
Do them again now for us to see.
When you are angry with us,
please still remember to be kind!
3 God is coming from Teman!
The Holy God is coming from Paran mountain.[a]
Selah.
His beautiful power covers the whole sky!
People praise him all over the earth!
4 He is as bright as the sunrise.
His hands throw bright lightning!
That is where he hides his power.
5 As he marches to war,
bad disease marches with him.
6 God stands ready to fight,
and he causes the earth to shake.
He looks at the nations
and they shake with fear.
The very old mountains break into pieces.
The old hills fall down flat.
He travels on roads that have been there for ever.
7 I see the tents where Cushan's people live,
and the people are afraid.
The people in Midian are shaking with fear.
8 Was it the rivers that made you angry, Lord?
Did the sea make you so angry?
You rode on your chariots as horses pulled them!
You rode into battle to win against your enemies.
9 You have prepared your bow.
You are ready to shoot your arrows.
Selah.
You send rivers of water to cut the earth into pieces.
10 The mountains see you and they shake.
Rain pours down from the sky and it causes floods.
The deep sea roars
and it lifts its waves up high.
11 You shoot your bright arrows
so that the sun and the moon stand still in the sky.
Your bright spear flies like lightning,
and the sun and the moon do not move!
12 You angrily march across the earth.
You knock down the armies of the nations,
because you are so angry.
13 You have marched out to rescue your people,
and to save your special servant.[b]
You have knocked down the leader of the wicked nation.
You have removed all his clothes,
from head to foot.
Selah.
14 You threw his own spear into his head,
and you destroyed his army.
When his soldiers rushed out to attack us,
they were laughing.
They thought that they would easily win against us,
as if we were poor, weak people.
15 But you, Lord, marched across the sea with your horses.
You made the waters of the sea shake.
16 I listened to this
and I was very afraid.
My lips shook with fear
when I heard the sound.
My bones became weak.
My legs would not let me walk.
But I will be patient.
I will wait for the day of trouble that will come.
Yes, punishment will come to the people who are attacking us.
17 Whatever happens, I will continue to thank the Lord.
If there are no flowers on the fig trees,
if there are no grapes on the vines,
if there are no olives on the olive trees,
if there are no crops in the fields,
if the sheep are dying in the hills,
if there are no cows on the farms,
18 I will still sing to thank the Lord!
I will be happy because God is the one who makes me safe.[c]
19 The Lord God causes me to be strong.
He makes my feet run safely over the rocks and hills,
like a deer's feet.
This prayer is for the music leader. He must use stringed instruments.

- 3:13 God's special servant is ‘Messiah’ in Hebrew. It may also mean Israel's king.
- 3:18 Habakkuk says this: Whatever happens he will still praise the Lord. He knows that God still has authority to rule! So he will still praise the Lord, even when bad things are happening.

3 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet. On shigionoth.[a](A)
2 Lord, I have heard(B) of your fame;
I stand in awe(C) of your deeds, Lord.(D)
Repeat(E) them in our day,
in our time make them known;
in wrath remember mercy.(F)
3 God came from Teman,(G)
the Holy One(H) from Mount Paran.[b](I)
His glory covered the heavens(J)
and his praise filled the earth.(K)
4 His splendor was like the sunrise;(L)
rays flashed from his hand,
where his power(M) was hidden.
5 Plague(N) went before him;
pestilence followed his steps.
6 He stood, and shook the earth;
he looked, and made the nations tremble.
The ancient mountains crumbled(O)
and the age-old hills(P) collapsed(Q)—
but he marches on forever.(R)
7 I saw the tents of Cushan in distress,
the dwellings of Midian(S) in anguish.(T)
8 Were you angry with the rivers,(U) Lord?
Was your wrath against the streams?
Did you rage against the sea(V)
when you rode your horses
and your chariots to victory?(W)
9 You uncovered your bow,
you called for many arrows.(X)
You split the earth with rivers;
10 the mountains saw you and writhed.(Y)
Torrents of water swept by;
the deep roared(Z)
and lifted its waves(AA) on high.
11 Sun and moon stood still(AB) in the heavens
at the glint of your flying arrows,(AC)
at the lightning(AD) of your flashing spear.
12 In wrath you strode through the earth
and in anger you threshed(AE) the nations.
13 You came out(AF) to deliver(AG) your people,
to save your anointed(AH) one.
You crushed(AI) the leader of the land of wickedness,
you stripped him from head to foot.
14 With his own spear you pierced his head
when his warriors stormed out to scatter us,(AJ)
gloating as though about to devour
the wretched(AK) who were in hiding.
15 You trampled the sea(AL) with your horses,
churning the great waters.(AM)
16 I heard and my heart pounded,
my lips quivered at the sound;
decay crept into my bones,
and my legs trembled.(AN)
Yet I will wait patiently(AO) for the day of calamity
to come on the nation invading us.
17 Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,(AP)
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,(AQ)
18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,(AR)
I will be joyful in God my Savior.(AS)
19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength;(AT)
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights.(AU)
