¹⁸ “Of what value^(A) is an idol^(B) carved by a craftsman?
    Or an image^(C) that teaches lies?
For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation;
    he makes idols that cannot speak.^(D)

⁸ They are all senseless^(A) and foolish;^(B)
    they are taught by worthless wooden idols.^(C)

⁹ All who make idols^(A) are nothing,
    and the things they treasure are worthless.^(B)
Those who would speak up for them are blind;^(C)
    they are ignorant, to their own shame.^(D)
10 Who shapes a god and casts an idol,^(E)
    which can profit nothing?^(F)

²⁷ They say to wood,^(A) ‘You are my father,’
    and to stone,^(B) ‘You gave me birth.’
They have turned their backs^(C) to me
    and not their faces;^(D)
yet when they are in trouble,^(E) they say,
    ‘Come and save^(F) us!’
²⁸ Where then are the gods^(G) you made for yourselves?
    Let them come if they can save you
    when you are in trouble!^(H)
For you, Judah, have as many gods
    as you have towns.^(I)

¹⁷ But those who trust in idols,
    who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’^(A)
    will be turned back in utter shame.^(B)

¹⁶ All the makers of idols will be put to shame and disgraced;^(A)
    they will go off into disgrace together.

¹⁵ The idols of the nations^(A) are silver and gold,
    made by human hands.^(B)
16 They have mouths, but cannot speak,^(C)
    eyes, but cannot see.
¹⁷ They have ears, but cannot hear,
    nor is there breath^(D) in their mouths.
¹⁸ Those who make them will be like them,
    and so will all who trust in them.
