⁶ David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning^(A) him; each one was bitter^(B) in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength^(C) in the Lord his God.

³⁹ Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup^(A) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”^(B)

³⁸ Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow^(A) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”^(B)

³⁹ Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup^(C) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”^(D)

⁴⁰ Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me^(E) for one hour?” he asked Peter.

³⁵ Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour^(A) might pass from him. ³⁶ “Abba,^[a] Father,”^(B) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup^(C) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”^(D)

³⁷ Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?

⁴³ An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.^{(A) 44} And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.^[a]

⁴⁵ When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.

¹⁰ After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus^(A) came down from Judea. ¹¹ Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says,^(B) ‘In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind^(C) the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”^(D)

¹² When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem.

¹⁰ The dispute became so violent that the commander was afraid Paul would be torn to pieces by them. He ordered the troops to go down and take him away from them by force and bring him into the barracks.^(A)

¹¹ The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage!^(B) As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”^(C)

The Plot to Kill Paul

¹² The next morning some Jews formed a conspiracy^(D) and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.^(E)

¹⁷ For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.^(A)
