Bitter Waters Made Sweet

²²So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of ^(AD)Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no ^(AE)water. ²³Now when they came to ^(AF)Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called ^[c]Marah. ²⁴And the people ^(AG)complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” ²⁵So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. ^(AH)When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet.

There He ^(AI)made a statute and an ^[d]ordinance for them, and there ^(AJ)He tested them, ²⁶and said, ^(AK)“If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the ^(AL)diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. ¹⁹When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen^[c] went into the sea,^(AA) the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.^(AB) ²⁰Then Miriam^(AC) the prophet,^(AD) Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels^(AE) and dancing.^(AF) ²¹Miriam sang^(AG) to them:

“Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver^(AH)
he has hurled into the sea.”^(AI)

The Waters of Marah and Elim

²²Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert^(AJ) of Shur.^(AK) For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.^(AL) ²³When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.^[d]^(AM)) ²⁴So the people grumbled^(AN) against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”^(AO)

²⁵Then Moses cried out^(AP) to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw^(AQ) it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.^(AR) ²⁶He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep^(AS) all his decrees,^(AT) I will not bring on you any of the diseases^(AU) I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals^(AV) you.”

²⁷Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped^(AW) there near the water.

In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, ^(P)nor your stranger who is within your gates. ¹¹For ^(Q)in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

The People Afraid of God’s Presence

¹⁸Now ^(AA)all the people ^(AB)witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain ^(AC)smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. ¹⁹Then they said to Moses, ^(AD)“You speak with us, and we will hear; but ^(AE)let not God speak with us, lest we die.”

²⁰And Moses said to the people, ^(AF)“Do not fear; ^(AG)for God has come to test you, and ^(AH)that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.” ²¹So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near ^(AI)the thick darkness where God was.

The Law of the Altar

²²Then the Lord said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘You have seen that I have talked with you ^(AJ)from heaven. ²³You shall not make anything to be ^(AK)with Me—gods of silver or gods of gold you shall not make for yourselves. ²⁴An altar of ^(AL)earth you shall make for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, ^(AM)your sheep and your oxen. In every ^(AN)place where I ^[d]record My name I will come to you, and I will ^(AO)bless you. ²⁵And ^(AP)if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you ^(AQ)use your tool on it, you have profaned it. ²⁶Nor shall you go up by steps to My altar, that your ^(AR)nakedness may not be exposed on it.’

²¹The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness^(AN) where God was.

²²Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites this: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven:^(AO) ²³Do not make any gods to be alongside me;^(AP) do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.^(AQ)

²⁴“‘Make an altar^(AR) of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings^(AS) and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle.
