¹⁰ The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”^(A)

¹¹ But the angel of the Lord^(A) called out to him from heaven,^(B) “Abraham! Abraham!”^(C)

“Here I am,”^(D) he replied.

¹² “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God,^(E) because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.^(F)”

¹⁵ The angel of the Lord^(A) called to Abraham from heaven^(B) a second time ¹⁶ and said, “I swear by myself,^(C) declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,^{(D) 17} I will surely bless you^(E) and make your descendants^(F) as numerous as the stars in the sky^(G) and as the sand on the seashore.^(H) Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,^{(I) 18} and through your offspring^[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,^[b](J) because you have obeyed me.”^(K)

¹³ There above it^[a] stood the Lord,^(A) and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.^(B) I will give you and your descendants the land^(C) on which you are lying.^(D)

¹¹ The angel of God^(A) said to me in the dream,^(B) ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’^{(C) 12} And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted,^(D) for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.^{(E) 13} I am the God of Bethel,^(F) where you anointed a pillar^(G) and where you made a vow^(H) to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.^(I)’”

Moses and the Burning Bush

3 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro^(A) his father-in-law, the priest of Midian,^(B) and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,^(C) the mountain^(D) of God. ² There the angel of the Lord^(E) appeared to him in flames of fire^(F) from within a bush.^(G) Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. ³ So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”

⁴ When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called^(H) to him from within the bush,^(I) “Moses! Moses!”

And Moses said, “Here I am.”^(J)

⁵ “Do not come any closer,”^(K) God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”^{(L) 6} Then he said, “I am the God of your father,^[a] the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.”^(M) At this, Moses hid^(N) his face, because he was afraid to look at God.^(O)
