19 Allora Pilato fece prendere Gesù e lo fece flagellare. 2 E i soldati, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo e gli misero addosso un mantello di porpora; quindi gli venivano davanti e gli dicevano: 3 «Salve, re dei Giudei!». E gli davano schiaffi. 4 Pilato intanto uscì di nuovo e disse loro: «Ecco, io ve lo conduco fuori, perché sappiate che non trovo in lui nessuna colpa». 5 Allora Gesù uscì, portando la corona di spine e il mantello di porpora. E Pilato disse loro: «Ecco l'uomo!». 6 Al vederlo i sommi sacerdoti e le guardie gridarono: «Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo!». Disse loro Pilato: «Prendetelo voi e crocifiggetelo; io non trovo in lui nessuna colpa». 7 Gli risposero i Giudei: «Noi abbiamo una legge e secondo questa legge deve morire, perché si è fatto Figlio di Dio».
8 All'udire queste parole, Pilato ebbe ancor più paura 9 ed entrato di nuovo nel pretorio disse a Gesù: «Di dove sei?». Ma Gesù non gli diede risposta. 10 Gli disse allora Pilato: «Non mi parli? Non sai che ho il potere di metterti in libertà e il potere di metterti in croce?». 11 Rispose Gesù: «Tu non avresti nessun potere su di me, se non ti fosse stato dato dall'alto. Per questo chi mi ha consegnato nelle tue mani ha una colpa più grande».
La condanna a morte
12 Da quel momento Pilato cercava di liberarlo; ma i Giudei gridarono: «Se liberi costui, non sei amico di Cesare! Chiunque infatti si fa re si mette contro Cesare». 13 Udite queste parole, Pilato fece condurre fuori Gesù e sedette nel tribunale, nel luogo chiamato Litòstroto, in ebraico Gabbatà. 14 Era la Preparazione della Pasqua, verso mezzogiorno. Pilato disse ai Giudei: «Ecco il vostro re!». 15 Ma quelli gridarono: «Via, via, crocifiggilo!». Disse loro Pilato: «Metterò in croce il vostro re?». Risposero i sommi sacerdoti: «Non abbiamo altro re all'infuori di Cesare». 16 Allora lo consegnò loro perché fosse crocifisso.
La crocifissione
17 Essi allora presero Gesù ed egli, portando la croce, si avviò verso il luogo del Cranio, detto in ebraico Gòlgota, 18 dove lo crocifissero e con lui altri due, uno da una parte e uno dall'altra, e Gesù nel mezzo. 19 Pilato compose anche l'iscrizione e la fece porre sulla croce; vi era scritto: «Gesù il Nazareno, il re dei Giudei». 20 Molti Giudei lessero questa iscrizione, perché il luogo dove fu crocifisso Gesù era vicino alla città; era scritta in ebraico, in latino e in greco. 21 I sommi sacerdoti dei Giudei dissero allora a Pilato: «Non scrivere: il re dei Giudei, ma che egli ha detto: Io sono il re dei Giudei». 22 Rispose Pilato: «Ciò che ho scritto, ho scritto».
La divisione dei vestiti
23 I soldati poi, quando ebbero crocifisso Gesù, presero le sue vesti e ne fecero quattro parti, una per ciascun soldato, e la tunica. Ora quella tunica era senza cuciture, tessuta tutta d'un pezzo da cima a fondo. 24 Perciò dissero tra loro: Non stracciamola, ma tiriamo a sorte a chi tocca. Così si adempiva la Scrittura:
Si son divise tra loro le mie vesti
e sulla mia tunica han gettato la sorte.
Gesù e sua madre
E i soldati fecero proprio così.
25 Stavano presso la croce di Gesù sua madre, la sorella di sua madre, Maria di Clèofa e Maria di Màgdala. 26 Gesù allora, vedendo la madre e lì accanto a lei il discepolo che egli amava, disse alla madre: «Donna, ecco il tuo figlio!». 27 Poi disse al discepolo: «Ecco la tua madre!». E da quel momento il discepolo la prese nella sua casa.
La morte di Gesù
28 Dopo questo, Gesù, sapendo che ogni cosa era stata ormai compiuta, disse per adempiere la Scrittura: «Ho sete». 29 Vi era lì un vaso pieno d'aceto; posero perciò una spugna imbevuta di aceto in cima a una canna e gliela accostarono alla bocca. 30 E dopo aver ricevuto l'aceto, Gesù disse: «Tutto è compiuto!». E, chinato il capo, spirò.
Il colpo di lancia
31 Era il giorno della Preparazione e i Giudei, perché i corpi non rimanessero in croce durante il sabato (era infatti un giorno solenne quel sabato), chiesero a Pilato che fossero loro spezzate le gambe e fossero portati via. 32 Vennero dunque i soldati e spezzarono le gambe al primo e poi all'altro che era stato crocifisso insieme con lui. 33 Venuti però da Gesù e vedendo che era gia morto, non gli spezzarono le gambe, 34 ma uno dei soldati gli colpì il fianco con la lancia e subito ne uscì sangue e acqua.
35 Chi ha visto ne dà testimonianza e la sua testimonianza è vera e egli sa che dice il vero, perché anche voi crediate. 36 Questo infatti avvenne perché si adempisse la Scrittura: Non gli sarà spezzato alcun osso. 37 E un altro passo della Scrittura dice ancora: Volgeranno lo sguardo a colui che hanno trafitto.
La sepoltura
38 Dopo questi fatti, Giuseppe d'Arimatèa, che era discepolo di Gesù, ma di nascosto per timore dei Giudei, chiese a Pilato di prendere il corpo di Gesù. Pilato lo concesse. Allora egli andò e prese il corpo di Gesù. 39 Vi andò anche Nicodèmo, quello che in precedenza era andato da lui di notte, e portò una mistura di mirra e di aloe di circa cento libbre. 40 Essi presero allora il corpo di Gesù, e lo avvolsero in bende insieme con oli aromatici, com'è usanza seppellire per i Giudei. 41 Ora, nel luogo dove era stato crocifisso, vi era un giardino e nel giardino un sepolcro nuovo, nel quale nessuno era stato ancora deposto. 42 Là dunque deposero Gesù, a motivo della Preparazione dei Giudei, poiché quel sepolcro era vicino.

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(A) 2 And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they dressed him in a purple robe.(B) 3 They kept coming up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and striking him on the face.(C) 4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no case against him.”(D) 5 So Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate[a] said to them, “Behold the man!”(E) 6 When the chief priests and the police saw him, they shouted, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him; I find no case against him.”(F) 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has claimed to be the Son of God.”(G)
8 Now when Pilate heard this, he was more afraid than ever. 9 He entered his headquarters again and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.(H) 10 Pilate therefore said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you and power to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”(I) 12 From then on Pilate tried to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. Everyone who claims to be a king sets himself against Caesar.”(J)
13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat[b] on the judge’s bench at a place called The Stone Pavement, or in Hebrew[c] Gabbatha.(K) 14 Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover, and it was about noon. He said to the Jews, “Here is your King!”(L) 15 They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate asked them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.
The Crucifixion of Jesus
So they took Jesus,(M) 17 and carrying the cross by himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew[d] is called Golgotha.(N) 18 There they crucified him and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth,[e] the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew,[f] in Latin, and in Greek. 21 Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ”(O) 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it but cast lots for it to see who will get it.” This was to fulfill what the scripture says,
“They divided my clothes among themselves,
and for my clothing they cast lots.”(P)
25 And that is what the soldiers did.
Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(Q) 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.”(R) 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
28 After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), “I am thirsty.”(S) 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.(T)
Jesus’s Side Is Pierced
31 Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the Sabbath, especially because that Sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed.(U) 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him.(V) 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.(W) 35 (He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows[g] that he tells the truth, so that you also may continue[h] to believe.)(X) 36 These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled, “None of his bones shall be broken.”(Y) 37 And again another passage of scripture says, “They will look on the one whom they have pierced.”(Z)
The Burial of Jesus
38 After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though a secret one because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed his body. 39 Nicodemus, who had at first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds.(AA) 40 They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, according to the burial custom of the Jews.(AB) 41 Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. 42 And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Mas Jesús no le dio respuesta. 10 Entonces le dijo Pilato: ¿A mí no me hablas? ¿No sabes que tengo autoridad para crucificarte, y que tengo autoridad para soltarte? 11 Respondió Jesús: Ninguna autoridad tendrías contra mí, si no te fuese dada de arriba; por tanto, el que a ti me ha entregado, mayor pecado tiene.
12 Desde entonces procuraba Pilato soltarle; pero los judíos daban voces, diciendo: Si a este sueltas, no eres amigo de César; todo el que se hace rey, a César se opone. 13 Entonces Pilato, oyendo esto, llevó fuera a Jesús, y se sentó en el tribunal en el lugar llamado el Enlosado, y en hebreo Gabata. 14 Era la preparación de la pascua, y como la hora sexta. Entonces dijo a los judíos: ¡He aquí vuestro Rey! 15 Pero ellos gritaron: ¡Fuera, fuera, crucifícale! Pilato les dijo: ¿A vuestro Rey he de crucificar? Respondieron los principales sacerdotes: No tenemos más rey que César. 16 Así que entonces lo entregó a ellos para que fuese crucificado. Tomaron, pues, a Jesús, y le llevaron.
Crucifixión y muerte de Jesús

17 Y él, cargando su cruz, salió al lugar llamado de la Calavera, y en hebreo, Gólgota; 18 y allí le crucificaron, y con él a otros dos, uno a cada lado, y Jesús en medio. 19 Escribió también Pilato un título, que puso sobre la cruz, el cual decía: JESÚS NAZARENO, REY DE LOS JUDÍOS. 20 Y muchos de los judíos leyeron este título; porque el lugar donde Jesús fue crucificado estaba cerca de la ciudad, y el título estaba escrito en hebreo, en griego y en latín. 21 Dijeron a Pilato los principales sacerdotes de los judíos: No escribas: Rey de los judíos; sino, que él dijo: Soy Rey de los judíos. 22 Respondió Pilato: Lo que he escrito, he escrito.
23 Cuando los soldados hubieron crucificado a Jesús, tomaron sus vestidos, e hicieron cuatro partes, una para cada soldado. Tomaron también su túnica, la cual era sin costura, de un solo tejido de arriba abajo. 24 Entonces dijeron entre sí: No la partamos, sino echemos suertes sobre ella, a ver de quién será. Esto fue para que se cumpliese la Escritura, que dice:
Repartieron entre sí mis vestidos,
Y sobre mi ropa echaron suertes.(A)
Y así lo hicieron los soldados. 25 Estaban junto a la cruz de Jesús su madre, y la hermana de su madre, María mujer de Cleofas, y María Magdalena. 26 Cuando vio Jesús a su madre, y al discípulo a quien él amaba, que estaba presente, dijo a su madre: Mujer, he ahí tu hijo. 27 Después dijo al discípulo: He ahí tu madre. Y desde aquella hora el discípulo la recibió en su casa.
28 Después de esto, sabiendo Jesús que ya todo estaba consumado, dijo, para que la Escritura se cumpliese:(B) Tengo sed. 29 Y estaba allí una vasija llena de vinagre; entonces ellos empaparon en vinagre una esponja, y poniéndola en un hisopo, se la acercaron a la boca. 30 Cuando Jesús hubo tomado el vinagre, dijo: Consumado es. Y habiendo inclinado la cabeza, entregó el espíritu.
El costado de Jesús traspasado
31 Entonces los judíos, por cuanto era la preparación de la pascua, a fin de que los cuerpos no quedasen en la cruz en el día de reposo[a] (pues aquel día de reposo[b] era de gran solemnidad), rogaron a Pilato que se les quebrasen las piernas, y fuesen quitados de allí. 32 Vinieron, pues, los soldados, y quebraron las piernas al primero, y asimismo al otro que había sido crucificado con él. 33 Mas cuando llegaron a Jesús, como le vieron ya muerto, no le quebraron las piernas. 34 Pero uno de los soldados le abrió el costado con una lanza, y al instante salió sangre y agua. 35 Y el que lo vio da testimonio, y su testimonio es verdadero; y él sabe que dice verdad, para que vosotros también creáis. 36 Porque estas cosas sucedieron para que se cumpliese la Escritura: No será quebrado hueso suyo.(C) 37 Y también otra Escritura dice: Mirarán al que traspasaron.(D)
Jesús es sepultado

38 Después de todo esto, José de Arimatea, que era discípulo de Jesús, pero secretamente por miedo de los judíos, rogó a Pilato que le permitiese llevarse el cuerpo de Jesús; y Pilato se lo concedió. Entonces vino, y se llevó el cuerpo de Jesús. 39 También Nicodemo, el que antes había visitado a Jesús de noche,(E) vino trayendo un compuesto de mirra y de áloes, como cien libras. 40 Tomaron, pues, el cuerpo de Jesús, y lo envolvieron en lienzos con especias aromáticas, según es costumbre sepultar entre los judíos. 41 Y en el lugar donde había sido crucificado, había un huerto, y en el huerto un sepulcro nuevo, en el cual aún no había sido puesto ninguno. 42 Allí, pues, por causa de la preparación de la pascua de los judíos, y porque aquel sepulcro estaba cerca, pusieron a Jesús.
