19 Allora Pilato fece prendere Gesù e lo fece flagellare. 2 E i soldati, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo e gli misero addosso un mantello di porpora; quindi gli venivano davanti e gli dicevano: 3 «Salve, re dei Giudei!». E gli davano schiaffi. 4 Pilato intanto uscì di nuovo e disse loro: «Ecco, io ve lo conduco fuori, perché sappiate che non trovo in lui nessuna colpa». 5 Allora Gesù uscì, portando la corona di spine e il mantello di porpora. E Pilato disse loro: «Ecco l'uomo!». 6 Al vederlo i sommi sacerdoti e le guardie gridarono: «Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo!». Disse loro Pilato: «Prendetelo voi e crocifiggetelo; io non trovo in lui nessuna colpa». 7 Gli risposero i Giudei: «Noi abbiamo una legge e secondo questa legge deve morire, perché si è fatto Figlio di Dio».
8 All'udire queste parole, Pilato ebbe ancor più paura 9 ed entrato di nuovo nel pretorio disse a Gesù: «Di dove sei?». Ma Gesù non gli diede risposta. 10 Gli disse allora Pilato: «Non mi parli? Non sai che ho il potere di metterti in libertà e il potere di metterti in croce?». 11 Rispose Gesù: «Tu non avresti nessun potere su di me, se non ti fosse stato dato dall'alto. Per questo chi mi ha consegnato nelle tue mani ha una colpa più grande».
La condanna a morte
12 Da quel momento Pilato cercava di liberarlo; ma i Giudei gridarono: «Se liberi costui, non sei amico di Cesare! Chiunque infatti si fa re si mette contro Cesare». 13 Udite queste parole, Pilato fece condurre fuori Gesù e sedette nel tribunale, nel luogo chiamato Litòstroto, in ebraico Gabbatà. 14 Era la Preparazione della Pasqua, verso mezzogiorno. Pilato disse ai Giudei: «Ecco il vostro re!». 15 Ma quelli gridarono: «Via, via, crocifiggilo!». Disse loro Pilato: «Metterò in croce il vostro re?». Risposero i sommi sacerdoti: «Non abbiamo altro re all'infuori di Cesare». 16 Allora lo consegnò loro perché fosse crocifisso.
La crocifissione
17 Essi allora presero Gesù ed egli, portando la croce, si avviò verso il luogo del Cranio, detto in ebraico Gòlgota, 18 dove lo crocifissero e con lui altri due, uno da una parte e uno dall'altra, e Gesù nel mezzo. 19 Pilato compose anche l'iscrizione e la fece porre sulla croce; vi era scritto: «Gesù il Nazareno, il re dei Giudei». 20 Molti Giudei lessero questa iscrizione, perché il luogo dove fu crocifisso Gesù era vicino alla città; era scritta in ebraico, in latino e in greco. 21 I sommi sacerdoti dei Giudei dissero allora a Pilato: «Non scrivere: il re dei Giudei, ma che egli ha detto: Io sono il re dei Giudei». 22 Rispose Pilato: «Ciò che ho scritto, ho scritto».
La divisione dei vestiti
23 I soldati poi, quando ebbero crocifisso Gesù, presero le sue vesti e ne fecero quattro parti, una per ciascun soldato, e la tunica. Ora quella tunica era senza cuciture, tessuta tutta d'un pezzo da cima a fondo. 24 Perciò dissero tra loro: Non stracciamola, ma tiriamo a sorte a chi tocca. Così si adempiva la Scrittura:
Si son divise tra loro le mie vesti
e sulla mia tunica han gettato la sorte.
Gesù e sua madre
E i soldati fecero proprio così.
25 Stavano presso la croce di Gesù sua madre, la sorella di sua madre, Maria di Clèofa e Maria di Màgdala. 26 Gesù allora, vedendo la madre e lì accanto a lei il discepolo che egli amava, disse alla madre: «Donna, ecco il tuo figlio!». 27 Poi disse al discepolo: «Ecco la tua madre!». E da quel momento il discepolo la prese nella sua casa.
La morte di Gesù
28 Dopo questo, Gesù, sapendo che ogni cosa era stata ormai compiuta, disse per adempiere la Scrittura: «Ho sete». 29 Vi era lì un vaso pieno d'aceto; posero perciò una spugna imbevuta di aceto in cima a una canna e gliela accostarono alla bocca. 30 E dopo aver ricevuto l'aceto, Gesù disse: «Tutto è compiuto!». E, chinato il capo, spirò.
Il colpo di lancia
31 Era il giorno della Preparazione e i Giudei, perché i corpi non rimanessero in croce durante il sabato (era infatti un giorno solenne quel sabato), chiesero a Pilato che fossero loro spezzate le gambe e fossero portati via. 32 Vennero dunque i soldati e spezzarono le gambe al primo e poi all'altro che era stato crocifisso insieme con lui. 33 Venuti però da Gesù e vedendo che era gia morto, non gli spezzarono le gambe, 34 ma uno dei soldati gli colpì il fianco con la lancia e subito ne uscì sangue e acqua.
35 Chi ha visto ne dà testimonianza e la sua testimonianza è vera e egli sa che dice il vero, perché anche voi crediate. 36 Questo infatti avvenne perché si adempisse la Scrittura: Non gli sarà spezzato alcun osso. 37 E un altro passo della Scrittura dice ancora: Volgeranno lo sguardo a colui che hanno trafitto.
La sepoltura
38 Dopo questi fatti, Giuseppe d'Arimatèa, che era discepolo di Gesù, ma di nascosto per timore dei Giudei, chiese a Pilato di prendere il corpo di Gesù. Pilato lo concesse. Allora egli andò e prese il corpo di Gesù. 39 Vi andò anche Nicodèmo, quello che in precedenza era andato da lui di notte, e portò una mistura di mirra e di aloe di circa cento libbre. 40 Essi presero allora il corpo di Gesù, e lo avvolsero in bende insieme con oli aromatici, com'è usanza seppellire per i Giudei. 41 Ora, nel luogo dove era stato crocifisso, vi era un giardino e nel giardino un sepolcro nuovo, nel quale nessuno era stato ancora deposto. 42 Là dunque deposero Gesù, a motivo della Preparazione dei Giudei, poiché quel sepolcro era vicino.

4 Пилат опять вышел и сказал им: вот, я вывожу Его к вам, чтобы вы знали, что я не нахожу в Нем никакой вины.
5 Тогда вышел Иисус в терновом венце и в багрянице. И сказал им [Пилат]: се, Человек!
6 Когда же увидели Его первосвященники и служители, то закричали: распни, распни Его! Пилат говорит им: возьмите Его вы, и распните; ибо я не нахожу в Нем вины.
7 Иудеи отвечали ему: мы имеем закон, и по закону нашему Он должен умереть, потому что сделал Себя Сыном Божиим.
8 Пилат, услышав это слово, больше убоялся.
9 И опять вошел в преторию и сказал Иисусу: откуда Ты? Но Иисус не дал ему ответа.
10 Пилат говорит Ему: мне ли не отвечаешь? не знаешь ли, что я имею власть распять Тебя и власть имею отпустить Тебя?
11 Иисус отвечал: ты не имел бы надо Мною никакой власти, если бы не было дано тебе свыше; посему более греха на том, кто предал Меня тебе.
12 С этого [времени] Пилат искал отпустить Его. Иудеи же кричали: если отпустишь Его, ты не друг кесарю; всякий, делающий себя царем, противник кесарю.
13 Пилат, услышав это слово, вывел вон Иисуса и сел на судилище, на месте, называемом Лифостротон, а по-еврейски Гаввафа.
14 Тогда была пятница перед Пасхою, и час шестый. И сказал [Пилат] Иудеям: се, Царь ваш!
15 Но они закричали: возьми, возьми, распни Его! Пилат говорит им: Царя ли вашего распну? Первосвященники отвечали: нет у нас царя, кроме кесаря.
16 Тогда наконец он предал Его им на распятие. И взяли Иисуса и повели.
17 И, неся крест Свой, Он вышел на место, называемое Лобное, по-еврейски Голгофа;
18 там распяли Его и с Ним двух других, по ту и по другую сторону, а посреди Иисуса.
19 Пилат же написал и надпись, и поставил на кресте. Написано было: Иисус Назорей, Царь Иудейский.
20 Эту надпись читали многие из Иудеев, потому что место, где был распят Иисус, было недалеко от города, и написано было по-- еврейски, по-гречески, по-римски.
21 Первосвященники же Иудейские сказали Пилату: не пиши: Царь Иудейский, но что Он говорил: Я Царь Иудейский.
22 Пилат отвечал: что я написал, то написал.
23 Воины же, когда распяли Иисуса, взяли одежды Его и разделили на четыре части, каждому воину по части, и хитон; хитон же был не сшитый, а весь тканый сверху.
24 Итак сказали друг другу: не станем раздирать его, а бросим о нем жребий, чей будет, --да сбудется реченное в Писании: разделили ризы Мои между собою и об одежде Моей бросали жребий. Так поступили воины.
25 При кресте Иисуса стояли Матерь Его и сестра Матери Его, Мария Клеопова, и Мария Магдалина.
26 Иисус, увидев Матерь и ученика тут стоящего, которого любил, говорит Матери Своей: Жено! се, сын Твой.
27 Потом говорит ученику: се, Матерь твоя! И с этого времени ученик сей взял Ее к себе.
28 После того Иисус, зная, что уже все совершилось, да сбудется Писание, говорит: жажду.
29 Тут стоял сосуд, полный уксуса. [Воины], напоив уксусом губку и наложив на иссоп, поднесли к устам Его.
30 Когда же Иисус вкусил уксуса, сказал: совершилось! И, преклонив главу, предал дух.
31 Но так как [тогда] была пятница, то Иудеи, дабы не оставить тел на кресте в субботу, --ибо та суббота была день великий, --просили Пилата, чтобы перебить у них голени и снять их.
32 Итак пришли воины, и у первого перебили голени, и у другого, распятого с Ним.
33 Но, придя к Иисусу, как увидели Его уже умершим, не перебили у Него голеней,
34 но один из воинов копьем пронзил Ему ребра, и тотчас истекла кровь и вода.
35 И видевший засвидетельствовал, и истинно свидетельство его; он знает, что говорит истину, дабы вы поверили.
36 Ибо сие произошло, да сбудется Писание: кость Его да не сокрушится.
37 Также и в другом [месте] Писание говорит: воззрят на Того, Которого пронзили.
38 После сего Иосиф из Аримафеи--ученик Иисуса, но тайный из страха от Иудеев, --просил Пилата, чтобы снять тело Иисуса; и Пилат позволил. Он пошел и снял тело Иисуса.
39 Пришел также и Никодим, --приходивший прежде к Иисусу ночью, --и принес состав из смирны и алоя, литр около ста.
40 Итак они взяли тело Иисуса и обвили его пеленами с благовониями, как обыкновенно погребают Иудеи.
41 На том месте, где Он распят, был сад, и в саду гроб новый, в котором еще никто не был положен.
42 Там положили Иисуса ради пятницы Иудейской, потому что гроб был близко.

19 于是，彼拉多命令把耶稣带去鞭打了。 2 士兵用荆棘编了冠冕，戴在他头上，给他穿上紫袍， 3 又走到他面前，说：“万岁，犹太人的王！”他们就打他耳光。 4 彼拉多又出来对众人说：“看，我带他出来见你们，让你们知道我查不出他有什么罪状。” 5 耶稣出来，戴着荆棘冠冕，穿着紫袍。彼拉多对他们说：“看哪，这个人！” 6 祭司长和圣殿警卫看见他，就喊着说：“钉十字架！钉十字架！”彼拉多对他们说：“你们自己把他带去钉十字架吧！我查不出他有什么罪状。” 7 犹太人回答他：“我们有律法，按照律法，他是该死的，因为他自以为是 神的儿子。”
8 彼拉多听见这话，越发害怕， 9 又进了总督府，对耶稣说：“你是哪里来的？”耶稣却不回答。 10 于是彼拉多对他说：“你不对我说话吗？难道你不知道我有权柄释放你，也有权柄把你钉十字架吗？” 11 耶稣回答他：“若不是从上头赐给你的，你就毫无权柄办我，所以，把我交给你的那人罪更重了。” 12 从此，彼拉多想要释放耶稣，无奈犹太人喊着说：“你若释放这个人，你就不是凯撒的忠臣[a]。凡自立为王的就是背叛凯撒。”
13 彼拉多听见这些话，就带耶稣出来，到了一个地方，叫“铺华石处”，希伯来话叫厄巴大，就在那里坐堂。 14 那日是逾越节的预备日，约在正午。彼拉多对犹太人说：“看哪，你们的王！” 15 他们就喊着：“除掉他！除掉他！把他钉十字架！”彼拉多对他们说：“要我把你们的王钉十字架吗？”祭司长回答：“除了凯撒，我们没有王。” 16 于是彼拉多把耶稣交给他们去钉十字架。

他们就把耶稣带了去。 17 耶稣背着自己的十字架出来，到了一个地方，名叫“髑髅地”，希伯来话叫各各他。 18 他们就在那里把他钉在十字架上，还有两个人和他一同被钉，一边一个，耶稣在中间。 19 彼拉多又写了一个牌子，钉在十字架上，写的是：“犹太人的王，拿撒勒人耶稣。” 20 有许多犹太人念这牌子，因为耶稣被钉十字架的地方靠近城，而且牌子是用希伯来、罗马、希腊三种文字写的。 21 犹太人的祭司长就对彼拉多说：“不要写‘犹太人的王’，要写‘那人说：我是犹太人的王’。” 22 彼拉多回答：“我写了就写了。”
23 士兵把耶稣钉在十字架上以后，把他的衣服拿来分为四份，每人一份。他们又拿他的内衣，这件内衣没有缝，是上下一片织成的。 24 他们就彼此说：“我们不要撕开，我们抽签，看是谁的。”这要应验经上的话说：
“他们分了我的外衣，
为我的内衣抽签。”
士兵果然做了这些事。 25 站在耶稣十字架旁边的，有他的母亲、姨母、革罗罢的妻子马利亚，和抹大拉的马利亚。 26 耶稣见母亲和他所爱的那门徒站在旁边，就对母亲说：“母亲[b]，看，你的儿子！” 27 又对那门徒说：“看，你的母亲！”从那刻起，那门徒就接她到自己家里去了。
耶稣之死(B)
28 这事以后，耶稣知道各样的事已经成了，为使经上的话应验，就说：“我渴了。” 29 有一个盛满了醋的罐子放在那里，他们就拿海绵蘸满了醋，绑在牛膝草上，送到他嘴边。 30 耶稣尝了那醋，说：“成了！”就低下头，断了气[c]。
耶稣的肋旁被刺
31 因为这日是预备日，又因为那安息日是个大日子，犹太人就来求彼拉多叫人打断他们的腿，把他们搬走，免得尸首在安息日留在十字架上。 32 于是士兵来，把第一个人的腿，和与耶稣同钉的另一个人的腿，都打断了。 33 当他们来到耶稣那里，见他已经死了，就没有打断他的腿。 34 然而有一个士兵拿枪扎他的肋旁，立刻有血和水流出来。 35 看见这事的人作了见证—他的见证是真的，他知道自己所说的是真的—好让你们也信。 36 这些事发生，为要应验经上的话：“他的骨头一根也不可折断。” 37 另有经文也说：“他们要仰望自己所扎的人。”
耶稣的安葬(C)
38 这些事以后，亚利马太的约瑟来求彼拉多，要把耶稣的身体领去。他是耶稣的门徒，只因怕犹太人，就暗地里作门徒。彼拉多准许了，他就把耶稣的身体领走。 39 尼哥德慕也来了，就是先前夜里去见耶稣的那位，他带着约一百斤的没药和沉香。 40 他们照犹太人丧葬的规矩，用细麻布加上香料，把耶稣的身体裹好了。 41 在耶稣钉十字架的地方有一个园子，园子里有一座新墓穴，是从来没有葬过人的。 42 因为那天是犹太人的预备日，而那坟墓又在附近，他们就把耶稣安放在那里。

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(A)
19 So then (B)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. 3 [a]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (C)struck Him with their hands.
4 Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, (D)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”
Pilate’s Decision
5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”
6 (E)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”
7 The Jews answered him, (F)“We have a law, and according to [b]our law He ought to die, because (G)He made Himself the Son of God.”
8 Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, 9 and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (H)But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [c]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”
11 Jesus answered, (I)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (J)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (K)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”
13 (L)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (M)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”
15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”
The chief priests answered, (N)“We have no king but Caesar!”
16 (O)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [d]and led Him away.
The King on a Cross(P)
17 (Q)And He, bearing His cross, (R)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (S)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (T)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:
JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”
22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23 (U)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:
(V)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”
Therefore the soldiers did these things.
Behold Your Mother
25 (W)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (X)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (Y)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (Z)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (AA)to his own home.
It Is Finished
28 After this, Jesus, [e]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (AB)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (AC)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (AD)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Jesus’ Side Is Pierced
31 (AE)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (AF)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (AG)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (AH)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (AI)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (AJ)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (AK)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (AL)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(AM)
38 (AN)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, (AO)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And (AP)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of (AQ)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and (AR)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So (AS)there they laid Jesus, (AT)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(A)
19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(B) 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(C) And they slapped him in the face.(D)
4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(E) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(F) 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(G) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”
But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(H) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(I)
7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(J) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(K)
8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace.(L) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(M) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(N) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(O) is guilty of a greater sin.”
12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(P) opposes Caesar.”
13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(Q) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(R) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(S) of the Passover; it was about noon.(T)
“Here is your king,”(U) Pilate said to the Jews.
15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”
“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(V)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(W)
So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(X) he went out to the place of the Skull(Y) (which in Aramaic(Z) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(AA)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(AB) the king of the jews.(AC) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(AD) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(AE)
22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”
This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(AF) that said,
So this is what the soldiers did.
25 Near the cross(AH) of Jesus stood his mother,(AI) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(AJ) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(AK) there, and the disciple whom he loved(AL) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
The Death of Jesus(AM)
28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(AN) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(AO) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(AP) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(AQ) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(AR) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(AS) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(AT) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(AU) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(AV) 35 The man who saw it(AW) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(AX) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(AY) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[c](AZ) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[d](BA)
The Burial of Jesus(BB)
38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(BC) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(BD) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[e] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(BE) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(BF) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(BG) and since the tomb was nearby,(BH) they laid Jesus there.
