18 Dette queste cose, Gesú uscí con i suoi discepoli e andò di là dal torrente Kedron, dove c'era un orto nel quale entrò lui con i suoi discepoli.
2 Or Giuda, che lo tradiva, conosceva anche lui quel luogo, perché molte volte Gesú vi si era ritirato con i suoi discepoli.
3 Giuda dunque, preso un gruppo di soldati e le guardie mandate dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai farisei. venne là con lanterne torce e armi.
4 Gesú allora, conoscendo tutto quello che gli stava per accadere, uscí e chiese loro: «Chi cercate?».
5 Gli risposero «Gesú il Nazareno». Gesú disse loro: «Io sono!». Or Giuda che lo tradiva era anch'egli con loro.
6 Appena egli disse loro: «Io sono», essi indietreggiarono e caddero a terra.
7 Gesú dunque domandò loro di nuovo: «Chi cercate?». Essi dissero: «Gesú il Nazareno».
8 Gesú rispose: «Vi ho detto che io sono; se dunque cercate me lasciate andare via costoro»;
9 e ciò affinché si adempisse la parola che egli aveva detto: «Non ho perduto nessuno di quelli che mi hai dato»,
10 Allora Simon Pietro, che aveva una spada la sfoderò, percosse il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli recise l'orecchio destro; or quel servo si chiamava Malco.
11 Ma Gesú disse a Pietro: «Riponi la tua spada nel fodero; non berrò io il calice che il Padre mi ha dato?».
12 Allora il gruppo di soldati, il capitano e le guardie dei Giudei presero Gesú e lo legarono.
13 E lo condussero prima da Anna, perché era suocero di Caiafa, che era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno.
14 Caiafa era colui che aveva consigliato ai Giudei che era conveniente che un uomo morisse per il popolo.
15 Or Simon Pietro e un altro discepolo seguivano Gesú. E quel discepolo era noto al sommo sacerdote, ed entrò con Gesú nel cortile del sommo sacerdote.
16 Ma Pietro restò alla porta di fuori. Allora l'altro discepolo, che era noto al sommo sacerdote, uscí e parlò alla portinaia e fece entrare Pietro.
17 E la serva portinaia disse a Pietro: «Non sei anche tu dei discepoli di quest'uomo?». Egli rispose: «Non lo sono».
18 Intanto i servi e le guardie, acceso un fuoco di carboni, se ne stavano in piedi e si scaldavano, perché faceva freddo; anche Pietro stava in piedi con loro e si scaldava.
19 Or il sommo sacerdote interrogò Gesú riguardo ai suoi discepoli e alla sua dottrina.
20 Gesú gli rispose: «Io ho parlato al mondo apertamente; ho sempre insegnato nella sinagoga e nel tempio dove tutti i Giudei si radunano, e non ho detto niente in segreto.
21 Perché interroghi me? Interroga coloro che hanno udito ciò che ho detto loro; ecco, essi sanno le cose che ho detto».
22 Egli aveva appena detto queste parole, che una delle guardie che gli stava vicino diede a Gesú uno schiaffo, dicendo: «Cosí rispondi al sommo sacerdote?».
23 Gesú gli rispose: «Se ho parlato male, mostra dov'è il male; ma se ho parlato bene, perché mi percuoti?».
24 Anna dunque lo rimandò legato a Caiafa, sommo sacerdote.
25 Intanto Simon Pietro stava là a scaldarsi. Gli dissero dunque: «Non sei anche tu dei suoi discepoli?» Ed egli lo negò e disse: «Non lo sono».
26 Ma uno dei servi del sommo sacerdote, parente di colui a cui Pietro aveva reciso l'orecchio, disse: «Non ti ho io visto nell'orto con lui?».
27 E Pietro lo negò di nuovo, e subito il gallo cantò.
28 Poi da Caiafa condussero Gesú nel pretorio; era mattino presto. Ma essi non entrarono nel pretorio, per non contaminarsi e poter cosí mangiare la Pasqua.
29 Pilato dunque uscí verso di loro e disse: «Quale accusa portate contro quest'uomo?».
30 Essi risposero e gli dissero: «Se costui non fosse un malfattore, non te l'avremmo dato nelle mani».
31 Allora Pilato disse loro: «Prendetelo voi e giudicatelo secondo la vostra legge». Ma i Giudei gli dissero: «A noi non è lecito far morire alcuno».
32 E ciò affinché si adempisse quello che Gesú aveva detto, indicando di quale morte doveva morire.
33 Pilato dunque rientrò nel pretorio chiamò Gesú e gli disse: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?».
34 Gesú gli rispose: «Dici questo da te stesso, oppure altri te lo hanno detto di me?».
35 Pilato gli rispose: «Sono io forse Giudeo? La tua nazione e i capi dei sacerdoti ti hanno consegnato nelle mie mani; che hai fatto?».
36 Gesú rispose: «Il mio regno non è di questo mondo; se il mio regno fosse di questo mondo, i miei servi combatterebbero affinché io non fossi dato in mano dei Giudei; ma ora il mio regno non è di qui».
37 Allora Pilato gli disse: «Dunque sei tu re?». Gesú rispose: «Tu dici giustamente che io sono re; per questo io sono nato e per questo sono venuto nel mondo: per rendere testimonianza alla verità; chiunque è per la verità ascolta la mia voce».
38 Pilato gli chiese: «Che cosa è verità?». E, detto questo, uscí di nuovo verso i Giudei e disse loro: «Io non trovo alcuna colpa in lui.
39 Ma vi è tra voi l'usanza che io vi liberi uno nella Pasqua; volete dunque che vi liberi il re dei Giudei?».
40 Allora tutti di nuovo gridarono, dicendo: «Non costui, ma Barabba». Or Barabba era un brigante.

Jesus is Betrayed and Arrested(A)
18 After Jesus had said all of this, he went with his disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas took a detachment of soldiers and some officers from the high priests and the Pharisees and went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Then Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen, went forward and asked them, “Who are you looking for?”
5 They answered him, “Jesus from Nazareth.”[a]
Jesus told them, “I AM.” Judas, the man who betrayed him, was standing with them.
6 When Jesus[b] told them, “I AM,” they backed away and fell to the ground.
7 So he asked them again, “Who are you looking for?”
They said, “Jesus from Nazareth.”[c]
8 Jesus replied, “I told you that I am the one,[d] so if you are looking for me, let these men go.” 9 This was to fulfill what he had said, “I did not lose a single one of those you gave me.”[e]
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. 11 Jesus told Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Shouldn’t I drink the cup that the Father has given me?”
Jesus before the High Priest(B)
12 Then the soldiers, along with their commander and the Jewish officers, arrested Jesus and tied him up. 13 First they brought him to Annas, because he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the person who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one man die for the people.
Peter Denies Jesus(C)
15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since the other disciple was known to the high priest, he accompanied Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 Peter, however, stood outside the gate. So this other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter inside. 17 The young woman at the gate asked Peter, “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples, too, are you?”
“I am not,” he replied.
18 Meanwhile, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had built and were warming themselves because it was cold. Peter was also standing with them, keeping himself warm.
The High Priest Questions Jesus(D)
19 Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his own teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue or in the Temple, where all Jews meet together, and I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said. These are the people who know what I said.”
22 When he said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Jesus on the face and demanded, “Is that any way to answer the high priest?”
23 Jesus answered him, “If I have said anything wrong, tell me what it was.[f] But if I have told the truth, why do you hit me?” 24 Then Annas sent him, with his hands tied, to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter Denies Jesus Again(E)
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Some people[g] asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples, too, are you?”
He denied it by saying, “I am not!”
26 Then one of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “I saw you in the garden with Jesus,[h] didn’t I?” 27 Peter again denied it, and immediately a rooster crowed.
Pilate Questions Jesus(F)
28 Then Jesus was led from Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters[i] early in the morning. The Jews[j] did not go into the headquarters, to avoid becoming unclean[k] and unable to eat the Passover meal. 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”
30 They answered him, “If he weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate told them, “You take him and try him according to your Law.”
The Jewish leaders[l] told him, “It is not legal for us to put anyone to death.” 32 This was to fulfill what Jesus had said[m] when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.
33 So Pilate went back into the governor’s headquarters,[n] summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 Jesus replied, “Are you asking this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about me?”
35 Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? It is your own nation and high priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my servants would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders.[o] But for now my kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?”
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. I was born for this, and I came into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is committed to the truth listens to my voice.”
38 Pilate asked him, “What is ‘truth’?” and then he went out to the Jewish leaders[p] again and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against him. 39 But you have a custom that I release one person for you at Passover. Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?”
40 At this, they shouted out again, “Not this fellow, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.[q]

Jesus Arrested(A)
18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(B) On the other side there was a garden,(C) and he and his disciples went into it.(D)
2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(E) 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding(F) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(G) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(H) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(I)
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,”(J) they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(K)
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[a](L)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(M) the Father has given me?”
12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(N) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(O) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(P)
Peter’s First Denial(Q)
15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(R) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(S) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.
He replied, “I am not.”(T)
18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(U) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(V)
The High Priest Questions Jesus(W)
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(X) or at the temple,(Y) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(Z) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(AA) nearby slapped him in the face.(AB) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(AC) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(AD) the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials(AE)
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(AF) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(AG)
26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(AH) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(AI) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(AJ)
Jesus Before Pilate(AK)
28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(AL) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(AM) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(AN) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AO)
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AP) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AQ)
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AR) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AS) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AT)
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AU) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AV)
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AW) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AX)
