L'arresto di Gesù
18 Detto questo, Gesù uscì con i suoi discepoli e andò di là dal torrente Cèdron, dove c'era un giardino nel quale entrò con i suoi discepoli. 2 Anche Giuda, il traditore, conosceva quel posto, perché Gesù vi si ritirava spesso con i suoi discepoli. 3 Giuda dunque, preso un distaccamento di soldati e delle guardie fornite dai sommi sacerdoti e dai farisei, si recò là con lanterne, torce e armi. 4 Gesù allora, conoscendo tutto quello che gli doveva accadere, si fece innanzi e disse loro: «Chi cercate?». 5 Gli risposero: «Gesù, il Nazareno». Disse loro Gesù: «Sono io!». Vi era là con loro anche Giuda, il traditore. 6 Appena disse «Sono io», indietreggiarono e caddero a terra. 7 Domandò loro di nuovo: «Chi cercate?». Risposero: «Gesù, il Nazareno». 8 Gesù replicò: «Vi ho detto che sono io. Se dunque cercate me, lasciate che questi se ne vadano». 9 Perché s'adempisse la parola che egli aveva detto: «Non ho perduto nessuno di quelli che mi hai dato». 10 Allora Simon Pietro, che aveva una spada, la trasse fuori e colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli tagliò l'orecchio destro. Quel servo si chiamava Malco. 11 Gesù allora disse a Pietro: «Rimetti la tua spada nel fodero; non devo forse bere il calice che il Padre mi ha dato?».
Gesù davanti ad Anna e a Caifa. Rinnegamenti di Pietro
12 Allora il distaccamento con il comandante e le guardie dei Giudei afferrarono Gesù, lo legarono 13 e lo condussero prima da Anna: egli era infatti suocero di Caifa, che era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno. 14 Caifa poi era quello che aveva consigliato ai Giudei: «E' meglio che un uomo solo muoia per il popolo».
15 Intanto Simon Pietro seguiva Gesù insieme con un altro discepolo. Questo discepolo era conosciuto dal sommo sacerdote e perciò entrò con Gesù nel cortile del sommo sacerdote; 16 Pietro invece si fermò fuori, vicino alla porta. Allora quell'altro discepolo, noto al sommo sacerdote, tornò fuori, parlò alla portinaia e fece entrare anche Pietro. 17 E la giovane portinaia disse a Pietro: «Forse anche tu sei dei discepoli di quest'uomo?». Egli rispose: «Non lo sono». 18 Intanto i servi e le guardie avevano acceso un fuoco, perché faceva freddo, e si scaldavano; anche Pietro stava con loro e si scaldava.
19 Allora il sommo sacerdote interrogò Gesù riguardo ai suoi discepoli e alla sua dottrina. 20 Gesù gli rispose: «Io ho parlato al mondo apertamente; ho sempre insegnato nella sinagoga e nel tempio, dove tutti i Giudei si riuniscono, e non ho mai detto nulla di nascosto. 21 Perché interroghi me? Interroga quelli che hanno udito ciò che ho detto loro; ecco, essi sanno che cosa ho detto». 22 Aveva appena detto questo, che una delle guardie presenti diede uno schiaffo a Gesù, dicendo: «Così rispondi al sommo sacerdote?». 23 Gli rispose Gesù: «Se ho parlato male, dimostrami dov'è il male; ma se ho parlato bene, perché mi percuoti?». 24 Allora Anna lo mandò legato a Caifa, sommo sacerdote.
25 Intanto Simon Pietro stava là a scaldarsi. Gli dissero: «Non sei anche tu dei suoi discepoli?». Egli lo negò e disse: «Non lo sono». 26 Ma uno dei servi del sommo sacerdote, parente di quello a cui Pietro aveva tagliato l'orecchio, disse: «Non ti ho forse visto con lui nel giardino?». 27 Pietro negò di nuovo, e subito un gallo cantò.
Gesù davanti a Pilato
28 Allora condussero Gesù dalla casa di Caifa nel pretorio. Era l'alba ed essi non vollero entrare nel pretorio per non contaminarsi e poter mangiare la Pasqua. 29 Uscì dunque Pilato verso di loro e domandò: «Che accusa portate contro quest'uomo?». 30 Gli risposero: «Se non fosse un malfattore, non te l'avremmo consegnato». 31 Allora Pilato disse loro: «Prendetelo voi e giudicatelo secondo la vostra legge!». Gli risposero i Giudei: «A noi non è consentito mettere a morte nessuno». 32 Così si adempivano le parole che Gesù aveva detto indicando di quale morte doveva morire.
33 Pilato allora rientrò nel pretorio, fece chiamare Gesù e gli disse: «Tu sei il re dei Giudei?». 34 Gesù rispose: «Dici questo da te oppure altri te l'hanno detto sul mio conto?». 35 Pilato rispose: «Sono io forse Giudeo? La tua gente e i sommi sacerdoti ti hanno consegnato a me; che cosa hai fatto?». 36 Rispose Gesù: «Il mio regno non è di questo mondo; se il mio regno fosse di questo mondo, i miei servitori avrebbero combattuto perché non fossi consegnato ai Giudei; ma il mio regno non è di quaggiù». 37 Allora Pilato gli disse: «Dunque tu sei re?». Rispose Gesù: «Tu lo dici; io sono re. Per questo io sono nato e per questo sono venuto nel mondo: per rendere testimonianza alla verità. Chiunque è dalla verità, ascolta la mia voce». 38 Gli dice Pilato: «Che cos'è la verità?». E detto questo uscì di nuovo verso i Giudei e disse loro: «Io non trovo in lui nessuna colpa. 39 Vi è tra voi l'usanza che io vi liberi uno per la Pasqua: volete dunque che io vi liberi il re dei Giudei?». 40 Allora essi gridarono di nuovo: «Non costui, ma Barabba!». Barabba era un brigante.

Jesus Is Arrested(A)
18 After Yeshua finished his prayer, he went with his disciples to the other side of the Kidron Valley. They entered the garden that was there.
2 Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place because Yeshua and his disciples often gathered there. 3 So Judas took a troop of soldiers and the guards from the chief priests and Pharisees and went to the garden. They were carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Yeshua knew everything that was going to happen to him. So he went to meet them and asked, “Who are you looking for?”
5 They answered him, “Yeshua from Nazareth.”
Yeshua told them, “I am he.”
Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with the crowd. 6 When Yeshua told them, “I am he,” the crowd backed away and fell to the ground.
7 Yeshua asked them again, “Who are you looking for?”
They said, “Yeshua from Nazareth.”
8 Yeshua replied, “I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these other men go.” 9 In this way what Yeshua had said came true: “I lost none of those you gave me.”
10 Simon Peter had a sword. He drew it, attacked the chief priest’s servant, and cut off the servant’s right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 Yeshua told Peter, “Put your sword away. Shouldn’t I drink the cup of suffering that my Father has given me?”
12 Then the army officer and the Jewish guards arrested Yeshua. They tied Yeshua up 13 and took him first to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas. Caiaphas, the chief priest that year, 14 was the person who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one man die for the people.
Peter Denies Jesus(B)
15 Simon Peter and another disciple followed Yeshua. The other disciple was well-known to the chief priest. So that disciple went with Yeshua into the chief priest’s courtyard. 16 Peter, however, was standing outside the gate. The other disciple talked to the woman who was the gatekeeper and brought Peter into the courtyard.
17 The gatekeeper asked Peter, “Aren’t you one of this man’s disciples too?”
Peter answered, “No, I’m not!”
18 The servants and the guards were standing around a fire they had built and were warming themselves because it was cold. Peter was standing there, too, and warming himself with the others.
The Chief Priest Questions Jesus
19 The chief priest questioned Yeshua about his disciples and his teachings.
20 Yeshua answered him, “I have spoken publicly for everyone to hear. I have always taught in synagogues or in the temple courtyard, where all the Jews gather. I haven’t said anything in secret. 21 Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said to them. They know what I’ve said.”
22 When Yeshua said this, one of the guards standing near Yeshua slapped his face and said, “Is that how you answer the chief priest?”
23 Yeshua replied to him, “If I’ve said anything wrong, tell me what it was. But if I’ve told the truth, why do you hit me?”
24 Annas sent Yeshua to Caiaphas, the chief priest. Yeshua was still tied up.
Peter Denies Jesus Again(C)
25 Simon Peter continued to stand and warm himself by the fire. Some men asked him, “Aren’t you, too, one of his disciples?”
Peter denied it by saying, “No, I’m not!”
26 One of the chief priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked him, “Didn’t I see you with Yeshua in the garden?”
27 Peter again denied it, and just then a rooster crowed.
Pilate Questions Jesus(D)
28 Early in the morning, Yeshua was taken from Caiaphas’ house to the governor’s palace.
The Jews wouldn’t go into the palace. They didn’t want to become unclean,[a] since they wanted to eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What accusation are you making against this man?”
30 The Jews answered Pilate, “If he weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate told the Jews, “Take him, and try him by your law.”
The Jews answered him, “We’re not allowed to execute anyone.” 32 In this way what Yeshua had predicted about how he would die came true.
33 Pilate went back into the palace, called for Yeshua, and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 Yeshua replied, “Did you think of that yourself, or did others tell you about me?”
35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own people and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”
36 Yeshua answered, “My kingdom doesn’t belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. My kingdom doesn’t have its origin on earth.”
37 Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?”
Yeshua replied, “You’re correct in saying that I’m a king. I have been born and have come into the world for this reason: to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to me.”
38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
After Pilate said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I don’t find this man guilty of anything. 39 You have a custom that I should free one person for you at Passover. Would you like me to free the king of the Jews for you?”
40 The Jews shouted again, “Don’t free this man! Free Barabbas!” (Barabbas was a political revolutionary.)

Jesus Arrested(A)
18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(B) On the other side there was a garden,(C) and he and his disciples went into it.(D)
2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(E) 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding(F) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(G) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(H) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(I)
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,”(J) they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(K)
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[a](L)
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(M) the Father has given me?”
12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(N) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(O) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(P)
Peter’s First Denial(Q)
15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(R) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(S) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.
He replied, “I am not.”(T)
18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(U) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(V)
The High Priest Questions Jesus(W)
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(X) or at the temple,(Y) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(Z) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(AA) nearby slapped him in the face.(AB) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(AC) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(AD) the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials(AE)
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(AF) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(AG)
26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(AH) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(AI) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(AJ)
Jesus Before Pilate(AK)
28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(AL) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(AM) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(AN) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AO)
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AP) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AQ)
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AR) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AS) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AT)
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AU) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AV)
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AW) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AX)
