La tribú di Ruben, di Gad e la mezza tribú di Manasse rimandate oltre il Giordano
22 (A)Allora *Giosuè chiamò i *Rubeniti, i *Gaditi e la mezza tribú di *Manasse, e disse loro: 2 «Voi avete osservato tutto ciò che *Mosè, servo del Signore, vi aveva ordinato, e avete ubbidito alla mia voce in tutto quello che vi ho comandato. 3 Voi non avete abbandonato i vostri fratelli durante questo lungo tempo, fino a oggi, e avete osservato scrupolosamente il comandamento del Signore, che è il vostro Dio. 4 E ora che il Signore, il vostro Dio, ha dato riposo ai vostri fratelli, come aveva loro detto, ritornate e andate alle vostre tende nel paese che vi appartiene, e che Mosè, servo del Signore, vi ha dato di là dal *Giordano. 5 Soltanto abbiate cura di mettere in pratica i comandamenti e la legge che Mosè, servo del Signore, vi ha dati, amando il Signore, il vostro Dio, camminando in tutte le sue vie, osservando i suoi comandamenti, tenendovi stretti a lui e servendolo con tutto il vostro cuore e con tutta l'anima vostra». 6 Poi Giosuè li benedisse e li congedò; e quelli tornarono alle loro tende.
7 Mosè aveva dato a una metà della tribú di Manasse un'eredità in *Basan, e Giosuè diede all'altra metà un'eredità tra i loro fratelli, di qua dal Giordano, a occidente.
Quando Giosuè li rimandò alle loro tende e li benedisse, disse loro ancora: 8 «Voi tornate alle vostre tende con grandi ricchezze, con moltissimo bestiame, con argento, oro, rame, ferro e con grandissima quantità di vestiario; dividete con i vostri fratelli il bottino dei vostri nemici».
9 I figli di Ruben, i figli di *Gad e la mezza tribú di Manasse dunque se ne tornarono, dopo aver lasciato i figli d'*Israele a Silo, nel paese di *Canaan, per andare nel paese di *Galaad, il paese di loro proprietà, del quale avevano ricevuto il possesso, dietro il comandamento dato dal Signore per mezzo di Mosè.
L'altare eretto di là dal Giordano
10 (B)E come giunsero alla regione del Giordano che appartiene al paese di Canaan, i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribú di Manasse vi costruirono un altare, presso il Giordano: un grande altare, che colpiva la vista. 11 I figli d'Israele udirono che si diceva: «Ecco, i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribú di Manasse hanno costruito un altare di fronte al paese di Canaan, nella regione del Giordano, dal lato dei figli d'Israele». 12 Quando i figli d'Israele udirono questo, tutta la comunità dei figli d'Israele si riuní a Silo per salire a combattere contro di loro.
13 E i figli d'Israele mandarono ai figli di Ruben, ai figli di Gad e alla mezza tribú di Manasse, nel paese di Galaad, *Fineas, figlio del *sacerdote *Eleazar, 14 e con lui dieci capi, un capo per ogni casa paterna di tutte le tribú d'Israele: tutti erano capi di una casa paterna fra le migliaia d'Israele. 15 Essi andarono dai figli di Ruben, dai figli di Gad e dalla mezza tribú di Manasse nel paese di Galaad, e dissero loro: 16 «Cosí ha detto tutta la comunità del Signore: “Che cos'è questa infedeltà che avete commesso contro il Dio d'Israele? Oggi, perché voltate le spalle e non seguite piú il Signore e avete costruito un altare per ribellarvi oggi al Signore? 17 È forse poca cosa per noi il peccato commesso a Peor del quale fino a oggi non ci siamo purificati e che attirò quel flagello sulla comunità del Signore? 18 Voi oggi voltate le spalle e non seguite piú il Signore! Cosí, se oggi voi vi ribellate al Signore, domani egli si adirerà contro tutta la comunità d'Israele. 19 Se ritenete impuro il paese che possedete, ebbene, passate nel paese che è proprietà del Signore, dov'è stabilito il *tabernacolo del Signore, e stanziatevi in mezzo a noi; ma non vi ribellate al Signore, e non fate di noi dei ribelli, costruendovi un altare oltre all'altare del Signore nostro Dio. 20 Acan, figlio di Zerac, che commise un'infedeltà relativa all'interdetto, non attirò forse l'ira del Signore su tutta la comunità d'Israele? Cosí quell'uomo non fu il solo a perire per la sua *iniquità”».
21 (C)Allora i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribú di Manasse risposero e dissero ai capi delle migliaia d'Israele: 22 «Dio, Dio, il Signore, Dio, Dio, il Signore lo sa, e anche Israele lo saprà. Se abbiamo agito per ribellione, o per infedeltà verso il Signore, o Dio, non ci salvare in questo giorno! 23 Se abbiamo costruito un altare per voltare le spalle e non seguire piú il Signore; se è per offrirvi sopra olocausti o oblazioni o per farvi sopra sacrifici di riconoscenza, il Signore ce ne chieda conto! 24 Egli sa se non l'abbiamo fatto, invece, per timore di questo: che, cioè, in avvenire, i vostri figli potessero dire ai nostri figli: “Che cosa avete a che fare voi con il Signore, il Dio d'Israele?” 25 Il Signore ha posto il Giordano come confine tra noi e voi, o figli di Ruben, o figli di Gad; voi non avete parte alcuna nel Signore! E cosí i vostri figli farebbero cessare i nostri figli dal temere il Signore. 26 Perciò abbiamo detto: Mettiamo ora mano a costruirci un altare, non per offrirci sopra olocausti né sacrifici, 27 ma perché serva da testimonianza tra noi e voi e in mezzo ai nostri discendenti dopo di noi, che vogliamo servire il Signore, nel suo cospetto, con i nostri olocausti, con i nostri sacrifici e con i nostri sacrifici di riconoscenza, affinché i vostri figli non abbiano un giorno a dire ai figli nostri: “Voi non avete parte alcuna nel Signore!” 28 E abbiamo detto: Se in avvenire essi diranno questo a noi o ai nostri discendenti, noi risponderemo: “Guardate la forma dell'altare del Signore che i nostri padri fecero, non per olocausti né per sacrifici, ma perché servisse di testimonianza tra noi e voi”. 29 Lungi da noi l'idea di ribellarci al Signore e di voltare le spalle e non seguire piú il Signore, costruendo un altare per olocausti, per oblazioni o per sacrifici, oltre all'altare del Signore nostro Dio, che è davanti al suo tabernacolo!»
30 Quando il sacerdote Fineas, e i capi della comunità, i capi delle migliaia d'Israele che erano con lui, ebbero udito le parole dette dai figli di Ruben, dai figli di Gad e dai figli di Manasse, rimasero soddisfatti. 31 Fineas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazar, disse ai figli di Ruben, ai figli di Gad e ai figli di Manasse: «Oggi riconosciamo che il Signore è in mezzo a noi, perché non avete commesso questa infedeltà verso il Signore; cosí avete liberato i figli d'Israele dalla mano del Signore».
32 Fineas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazar, e i capi si allontanarono dai figli di Ruben e dai figli di Gad e tornarono dal paese di Galaad al paese di Canaan presso i figli d'Israele, ai quali riferirono l'accaduto. 33 I figli d'Israele furono soddisfatti, benedissero Dio e non parlarono piú di salire a combattere contro i figli di Ruben e di Gad per devastare il paese che essi abitavano.
34 E i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad diedero a quell'altare il nome di Ed[a], perché dissero: «Esso è una testimonianza in mezzo a noi che il Signore è Dio».

Eastern Tribes Return to Their Lands
22 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh, 2 and said to them: “You have kept (A)all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, (B)and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you. 3 You have not [a]left your brethren these many days, up to this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the Lord your God. 4 And now the Lord your God has given (C)rest to your brethren, as He promised them; now therefore, return and go to your tents and to the land of your possession, (D)which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. 5 But (E)take[b] careful heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, (F)to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.” 6 So Joshua (G)blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents.
7 Now to half the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, (H)but to the other half of it Joshua gave a possession among their brethren on this side of the Jordan, westward. And indeed, when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them, 8 and spoke to them, saying, “Return with much riches to your tents, with very much livestock, with silver, with gold, with bronze, with iron, and with very much clothing. (I)Divide the [c]spoil of your enemies with your brethren.”
9 So the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to (J)the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, which they had obtained according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
An Altar by the Jordan
10 And when they came to the region of the Jordan which is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan—a great, impressive altar. 11 Now the children of Israel (K)heard someone say, “Behold, the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh have built an altar on the [d]frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region of the Jordan—on the children of Israel’s side.” 12 And when the children of Israel heard of it, (L)the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered together at Shiloh to go to war against them.
13 Then the children of Israel (M)sent (N)Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, 14 and with him ten rulers, one ruler each from the chief house of every tribe of Israel; and (O)each one was the head of the house of his father among the [e]divisions of Israel. 15 Then they came to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying, 16 “Thus says the whole congregation of the Lord: ‘What (P)treachery[f] is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the Lord, in that you have built for yourselves an altar, (Q)that you might rebel this day against the Lord? 17 Is the iniquity (R)of Peor not enough for us, from which we are not cleansed till this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord, 18 but that you must turn away this day from following the Lord? And it shall be, if you rebel today against the Lord, that tomorrow (S)He will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel. 19 [g]Nevertheless, if the land of your possession is unclean, then cross over to the land of the possession of the Lord, (T)where the Lord’s tabernacle stands, and take possession among us; but do not rebel against the Lord, nor rebel against us, by building yourselves an altar besides the altar of the Lord our God. 20 (U)Did not Achan the son of Zerah [h]commit a trespass in the [i]accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.’ ”
21 Then the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh answered and said to the heads of the [j]divisions of Israel: 22 “The Lord (V)God of gods, the Lord God of gods, He (W)knows, and let Israel itself know—if it is in rebellion, or if in treachery against the Lord, do not save us this day. 23 If we have built ourselves an altar to turn from following the Lord, or if to offer on it burnt offerings or grain offerings, or if to offer peace offerings on it, let the Lord Himself (X)require an account. 24 But in fact we have done it [k]for fear, for a reason, saying, ‘In time to come your descendants may speak to our descendants, saying, “What have you to do with the Lord God of Israel? 25 For the Lord has made the Jordan a border between you and us, you children of Reuben and children of Gad. You have no part in the Lord.” So your descendants would make our descendants cease fearing the Lord.’ 26 Therefore we said, ‘Let us now prepare to build ourselves an altar, not for burnt offering nor for sacrifice, 27 but that it may be (Y)a [l]witness between you and us and our generations after us, that we may (Z)perform the service of the Lord before Him with our burnt offerings, with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your descendants may not say to our descendants in time to come, “You have no part in the Lord.” ’ 28 Therefore we said that it will be, when they say this to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say, ‘Here is the replica of the altar of the Lord which our fathers made, though not for burnt offerings nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between you and us.’ 29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord, and turn from following the Lord this day, (AA)to build an altar for burnt offerings, for grain offerings, or for sacrifices, besides the altar of the Lord our God which is before His tabernacle.”
30 Now when Phinehas the priest and the rulers of the congregation, the heads of the [m]divisions of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them. 31 Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and the children of Manasseh, “This day we perceive that the Lord is (AB)among us, because you have not committed this treachery against the Lord. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the Lord.”
32 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the rulers, returned from the children of Reuben and the children of Gad, from the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought back word to them. 33 So the thing pleased the children of Israel, and the children of Israel (AC)blessed God; they spoke no more of going against them in battle, to destroy the land where the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.
34 The children of Reuben and the children of [n]Gad called the altar, Witness, “For it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.”
