I. CONQUISTA DELLA TERRA PROMESSA
1. PREPARATIVI
Invito a passare nella Terra Promessa
1 Dopo la morte di Mosè, servo del Signore, il Signore disse a Giosuè, figlio di Nun, servo di Mosè: 2 «Mosè mio servo è morto; orsù, attraversa questo Giordano tu e tutto questo popolo, verso il paese che io dò loro, agli Israeliti. 3 Ogni luogo che calcherà la pianta dei vostri piedi, ve l'ho assegnato, come ho promesso a Mosè. 4 Dal deserto e dal Libano fino al fiume grande, il fiume Eufrate, tutto il paese degli Hittiti, fino al Mar Mediterraneo, dove tramonta il sole: tali saranno i vostri confini. 5 Nessuno potrà resistere a te per tutti i giorni della tua vita; come sono stato con Mosè, così sarò con te; non ti lascerò né ti abbandonerò.
La fedeltà alla Legge, condizione dell'aiuto divino
6 Sii coraggioso e forte, poiché tu dovrai mettere questo popolo in possesso della terra che ho giurato ai loro padri di dare loro. 7 Solo sii forte e molto coraggioso, cercando di agire secondo tutta la legge che ti ha prescritta Mosè, mio servo. Non deviare da essa né a destra né a sinistra, perché tu abbia successo in qualunque tua impresa. 8 Non si allontani dalla tua bocca il libro di questa legge, ma mèditalo giorno e notte, perché tu cerchi di agire secondo quanto vi è scritto; poiché allora tu porterai a buon fine le tue imprese e avrai successo. 9 Non ti ho io comandato: Sii forte e coraggioso? Non temere dunque e non spaventarti, perché è con te il Signore tuo Dio, dovunque tu vada».

10 Allora Giosuè comandò agli scribi del popolo: 11 «Passate in mezzo all'accampamento e comandate al popolo: Fatevi provviste di viveri, poiché fra tre giorni voi passerete questo Giordano, per andare ad occupare il paese che il Signore vostro Dio vi dà in possesso».
12 Poi Giosuè disse ai Rubeniti, ai Gaditi e alla metà della tribù di Manàsse: 13 «Ricordatevi di ciò che vi ha ordinato Mosè, servo del Signore: Il Signore Dio vostro vi concede riposo e vi dà questo paese; 14 le vostre mogli, i vostri bambini e il vostro bestiame rimarranno nella terra che vi ha assegnata Mosè oltre il Giordano; voi tutti invece, prodi guerrieri, passerete ben armati davanti ai vostri fratelli, e li aiuterete, 15 finché il Signore conceda riposo ai vostri fratelli, come a voi, e anch'essi siano entrati in possesso del paese che il Signore Dio vostro assegna loro. Allora ritornerete e possederete la terra della vostra eredità, che Mosè, servo del Signore, diede a voi oltre il Giordano, ad oriente». 16 Essi risposero a Giosuè: «Faremo quanto ci hai ordinato e noi andremo dovunque ci manderai. 17 Come abbiamo obbedito in tutto a Mosè, così obbediremo a te; ma il Signore tuo Dio sia con te come è stato con Mosè. 18 Chiunque disprezzerà i tuoi ordini e non obbedirà alle tue parole in quanto ci comanderai, sarà messo a morte. Solo, sii forte e coraggioso».

1 Dopo la morte di Mosè, servo dell'Eterno, avvenne che l'Eterno parlò a Giosuè, figlio di Nun, ministro di Mosè, egli disse:
2 «Mosè, mio servo, è morto; or dunque alzati, passa questo Giordano tu e tutto questo popolo, verso il paese che io do loro, ai figli d'Israele.
3 Io vi ho dato ogni luogo che la pianta del vostro piede calcherà, come ho detto a Mosè.
4 Il tuo territorio si estenderà dal deserto e da questo Libano fino al grande fiume, il fiume Eufrate, tutto il paese degli Hittei fino al Mar Grande, a ovest.
5 Nessuno ti potrà resistere tutti i giorni della tua vita; come sono stato con Mosè, così sarò con te; io non ti lascerò e non ti abbandonerò.
6 Sii forte e coraggioso, perché tu metterai questo popolo in possesso del paese che giurai ai loro padri di dare loro.
7 Solo sii forte e molto coraggioso, cercando di agire secondo tutta la legge che Mosè, mio servo, ti ha prescritto; non deviare da essa né a destra né a sinistra, affinché tu prosperi dovunque andrai.
8 Questo libro della legge non si diparta mai dalla tua bocca, ma meditalo giorno e notte, cercando di agire secondo tutto ciò che vi è scritto, perché allora riuscirai nelle tue imprese, allora prospererai.
9 Non te l'ho io comandato? Sii forte e coraggioso; non aver paura e non sgomentarti, perché l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, è con te dovunque tu vada»
10 Allora Giosuè comandó agli ufficiali del popolo, dicendo:
11 «Passate in mezzo all'accampamento e date quest'ordine al popolo, dicendo: Fatevi delle provviste di viveri, perché entro tre giorni passerete questo Giordano per andare ad occupare il paese che l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, vi dà in eredità».
12 Giosuè parlò pure ai Rubeniti, ai Gaditi e alla mezza tribú di Manasse, e disse loro:
13 «Ricordatevi della parola che Mosè, servo dell'Eterno, vi comandò quando vi disse: "L'Eterno, il vostro DIO, vi ha concesso riposo e vi ha dato questo paese.
14 Le vostre mogli, i vostri piccoli e il vostro bestiame rimarranno nel paese che Mosè vi ha dato di qua dal Giordano; ma voi, tutti i vostri guerrieri valorosi passerete armati davanti ai vostri fratelli, e li aiuterete,
15 finché l'Eterno avrà dato riposo ai vostri fratelli come a voi, e avranno anch'essi preso possesso del paese che l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, dà loro. Allora potrete ritornare ad occupare il paese che vi appartiene, e che Mosè, servo dell'Eterno, vi ha dato di qua dal Giordano verso est"».
16 Essi allora risposero a Giosuè, dicendo: «Noi Faremo tutto quello che ci comandi e andremo dovunque ci manderai.
17 Come abbiamo ubbidito in ogni cosa a Mosè, così ubbidiremo a te. Soltanto sia con te l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, come è stato con Mosè!
18 Chiunque si ribella ai tuoi ordini e non ubbidisce alle tue parole in tutto ciò che gli comandi, sarà messo a morte. Solo sii forte e coraggioso!».

God’s Commission to Joshua
1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying, 2 “My servant Moses is dead. Now proceed to cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the Israelites. 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, as I promised to Moses. 4 From the wilderness and the Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, to the Great Sea in the west shall be your territory. 5 No one shall be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous; for you shall put this people in possession of the land that I swore to their ancestors to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to act in accordance with all the law that my servant Moses commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, so that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful. 9 I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Preparations for the Invasion
10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, 11 “Pass through the camp, and command the people: ‘Prepare your provisions; for in three days you are to cross over the Jordan, to go in to take possession of the land that the Lord your God gives you to possess.’”
12 To the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua said, 13 “Remember the word that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, ‘The Lord your God is providing you a place of rest, and will give you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall remain in the land that Moses gave you beyond the Jordan. But all the warriors among you shall cross over armed before your kindred and shall help them, 15 until the Lord gives rest to your kindred as well as to you, and they too take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving them. Then you shall return to your own land and take possession of it, the land that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you beyond the Jordan to the east.”
16 They answered Joshua: “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you, as he was with Moses! 18 Whoever rebels against your orders and disobeys your words, whatever you command, shall be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”

1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord,(A) the Lord said to Joshua(B) son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River(C) into the land(D) I am about to give to them(E)—to the Israelites. 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot,(F) as I promised Moses.(G) 4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon,(H) and from the great river, the Euphrates(I)—all the Hittite(J) country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.(K) 5 No one will be able to stand against you(L) all the days of your life. As I was with(M) Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake(N) you. 6 Be strong(O) and courageous,(P) because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors(Q) to give them.
7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey(R) all the law(S) my servant Moses(T) gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left,(U) that you may be successful wherever you go.(V) 8 Keep this Book of the Law(W) always on your lips;(X) meditate(Y) on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.(Z) 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid;(AA) do not be discouraged,(AB) for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”(AC)
10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people:(AD) 11 “Go through the camp(AE) and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions(AF) ready. Three days(AG) from now you will cross the Jordan(AH) here to go in and take possession(AI) of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”
12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,(AJ) Joshua said, 13 “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest(AK) by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives,(AL) your children and your livestock may stay in the land(AM) that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle,(AN) must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites.(AO) You are to help them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”(AP)
16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.(AQ) 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you.(AR) Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey(AS) it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!(AT)”
