1 E la parola dell'Eterno fu rivolta a Giona, figlio di Amittai, dicendo:
2 «Lèvati va' a Ninive, la grande città e predica contro di lei, perché la loro malvagità è salita davanti a me».
3 Ma Giona si levò per fuggire a Tarshish, lontano dalla presenza dell'Eterno. Cosí scese a Giaffa, dove trovò una nave che andava a Tarshish. Pagò il prezzo stabilito e s'imbarcò per andare con loro a Tarshish, lontano dalla presenza dell'Eterno.
4 Ma l'Eterno scatenò un forte vento sul mare e si levò una grande tempesta sul mare, sicché la nave minacciava di sfasciarsi.
5 I marinai spaventati, gridarono ciascuno al proprio dio e gettarono in mare il carico che era sulla nave per alleggerirla. Intanto Giona era sceso nelle parti piú recondite della nave, si era coricato e dormiva profondamente.
6 Il capitano gli si avvicinò e gli disse: «Che fai cosí profondamente addormentato? Alzati, invoca il tuo DIO! Forse DIO si darà pensiero di noi e non periremo».
7 Poi si dissero l'un l'altro: «Venite gettiamo le sorti per sapere a causa di chi ci è venuta addosso questa sciagura». Cosí gettarono le sorti e la sorte cadde su Giona.
8 Allora gli chiesero: «Spiegaci dunque per causa di chi ci è venuta addosso questa sciagura. Qual è il tuo mestiere? Da dove vieni? Qual è il tuo paese? A quale popolo appartieni?».
9 Egli rispose loro: «Io sono un Ebreo e temo l'Eterno il DIO del cielo, che ha fatto il mare e la terra ferma».
10 Allora quegli uomini furono presi da grande spavento e gli dissero: «Perché hai fatto questo?». Essi infatti si erano resi conto che egli fuggiva lontano dalla presenza dell'Eterno perché lo aveva loro detto.
11 Essi gli dissero: «Cosa dobbiamo farti perché il mare si calmi per noi?». Il mare infatti si faceva sempre piú tempestoso.
12 Egli rispose loro: «Prendetemi e gettatemi in mare e il mare si calmerà per voi, perché io so che questa grande tempesta vi è venuta addosso per causa mia».
13 Tuttavia quegli uomini remavano con forza per riportare la nave a terra, ma non riuscivano, perché il mare si faceva sempre piú tempestoso contro di loro.
14 Perciò gridarono all'Eterno e dissero: «Deh, o Eterno, non lasciare che periamo per la vita di questo uomo e non renderci colpevoli di sangue innocente, perché tu, o Eterno, hai fatto come hai voluto».
15 Quindi presero Giona e lo gettarono in mare, e la furia del mare si calmò.
16 Quegli uomini allora, presi da un gran timore dell'Eterno, offrirono un sacrificio all'Eterno e fecero voti.
17 (02-1) Ora l'Eterno aveva preparato un grosso pesce perché inghiottisse Giona; e Giona fu nel ventre del pesce tre giorni e tre notti.

1 Cuvântul Domnului a vorbit lui Iona(A), fiul lui Amitai, astfel: 2 „Scoală-te, du-te la Ninive, cetatea cea mare(B), şi strigă împotriva ei. Căci răutatea(C) ei s-a suit până la Mine!” 3 Şi Iona s-a sculat(D) să fugă la Tars, departe de Faţa Domnului. S-a pogorât la Iafo(E) şi a găsit acolo o corabie care mergea la Tars. A plătit preţul călătoriei şi s-a suit în corabie ca să meargă împreună cu călătorii la Tars, departe(F) de Faţa Domnului. 4 Dar Domnul(G) a făcut să sufle pe mare un vânt năpraznic şi a stârnit o mare furtună. Corabia ameninţa să se sfărâme. 5 Corăbierii s-au temut, au strigat fiecare la dumnezeul lui şi au aruncat(H) în mare uneltele din corabie, ca s-o facă mai uşoară. Iona s-a pogorât în fundul(I) corabiei, s-a culcat şi a adormit dus. 6 Cârmaciul s-a apropiat de el şi i-a zis: „Ce dormi? Scoală-te şi cheamă(J) pe Dumnezeul tău! Poate că(K) Dumnezeu va voi să se gândească la noi, şi nu vom pieri!” 7 Şi au zis unul către altul: „Veniţi să tragem la sorţ(L), ca să ştim din pricina cui a venit peste noi nenorocirea aceasta!” Au tras la sorţ, şi sorţul a căzut pe Iona. 8 Atunci, ei i-au zis: „Spune-ne(M) din pricina cui a venit peste noi nenorocirea aceasta? Ce meserie ai şi de unde vii? Care îţi este ţara şi din ce popor eşti?” 9 El le-a răspuns: „Sunt evreu şi mă tem de Domnul, Dumnezeul cerurilor, care(N) a făcut marea şi uscatul!” 10 Oamenii aceia au avut o mare teamă şi i-au zis: „Pentru ce ai făcut lucrul acesta?” Căci oamenii aceia ştiau că fugea de Faţa Domnului, pentru că le spusese el. 11 Ei i-au zis: „Ce să-ţi facem ca să se potolească marea faţă de noi?” Căci marea era din ce în ce mai înfuriată. 12 El le-a răspuns: „Luaţi-mă(O) şi aruncaţi-mă în mare, şi marea se va linişti faţă de voi! Căci ştiu că din vina mea vine peste voi această mare furtună!” 13 Oamenii aceştia vâsleau ca să ajungă la uscat, dar nu puteau(P), pentru că marea se întărâta tot mai mult împotriva lor. 14 Atunci au strigat către Domnul şi au zis: „Doamne, nu ne pierde din pricina vieţii omului acestuia şi nu ne împovăra(Q) cu sânge nevinovat! Căci Tu, Doamne, faci(R) ce vrei!” 15 Apoi au luat pe Iona şi l-au aruncat în mare. Şi furia mării(S) s-a potolit. 16 Pe oamenii aceia i-a apucat o mare frică(T) de Domnul şi au adus Domnului o jertfă şi I-au făcut juruinţe. 17 Domnul a trimis un peşte mare să înghită pe Iona şi(U) Iona a stat în pântecele peştelui trei zile şi trei nopţi.

Jonah’s Disobedience
1 Now the word of the Lord came to (A)Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to (B)Nineveh, that (C)great city, and cry out against it; for (D)their wickedness has come up before Me.” 3 But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to (E)Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to (F)Tarshish (G)from the presence of the Lord.
The Storm at Sea
4 But (H)the Lord [a]sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.
5 Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten [b]the load. But Jonah had gone down (I)into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.
6 So the captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, (J)call on your God; (K)perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
7 And they said to one another, “Come, let us (L)cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this trouble has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 Then they said to him, (M)“Please tell us! For whose cause is this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?”
9 So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear [c]the Lord, the God of heaven, (N)who made the sea and the dry land.”
Jonah Thrown into the Sea
10 Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11 Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?”—for the sea was growing more tempestuous.
12 And he said to them, (O)“Pick me up and [d]throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, (P)but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them. 14 Therefore they cried out to the Lord and said, “We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and (Q)do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, (R)have done as it pleased You.” 15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, (S)and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men (T)feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord and took vows.
Jonah’s Prayer and Deliverance
17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And (U)Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah Flees From the Lord
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah(A) son of Amittai:(B) 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh(C) and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 But Jonah ran(D) away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish(E). He went down to Joppa,(F) where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.(G)
4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.(H) 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.(I)
But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call(J) on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”(K)
7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.”(L) They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.(M) 8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord,(N) the God of heaven,(O) who made the sea(P) and the dry land.(Q)”
10 This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)
11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”(R)
13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.(S) 14 Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man,(T) for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.”(U) 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.(V) 16 At this the men greatly feared(W) the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows(X) to him.
Jonah’s Prayer
17 Now the Lord provided(Y) a huge fish to swallow Jonah,(Z) and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
