Il corso inarrestabile della giustizia divina
8 Allora prese a dire Bildad il Suchita:
2 Fino a quando dirai queste cose
e vento impetuoso saranno le parole della tua bocca?
3 Può forse Dio deviare il diritto
o l'Onnipotente sovvertire la giustizia?
4 Se i tuoi figli hanno peccato contro di lui,
li ha messi in balìa della loro iniquità.
5 Se tu cercherai Dio
e implorerai l'Onnipotente,
6 se puro e integro tu sei,
fin d'ora veglierà su di te
e ristabilirà la dimora della tua giustizia;
7 piccola cosa sarà la tua condizione di prima,
di fronte alla grandezza che avrà la futura.
8 Chiedilo infatti alle generazioni passate,
poni mente all'esperienza dei loro padri,
9 perché noi siamo di ieri e nulla sappiamo,
come un'ombra sono i nostri giorni sulla terra.
10 Essi forse non ti istruiranno e ti parleranno
traendo le parole dal cuore?
11 Cresce forse il papiro fuori della palude
e si sviluppa forse il giunco senz'acqua?
12 E' ancora verde, non buono per tagliarlo,
e inaridisce prima d'ogn'altra erba.
13 Tale il destino di chi dimentica Dio,
così svanisce la speranza dell'empio;
14 la sua fiducia è come un filo
e una tela di ragno è la sua sicurezza:
15 si appoggi alla sua casa, essa non resiste,
vi si aggrappi, ma essa non regge.
16 Rigoglioso sia pure in faccia al sole
e sopra il giardino si spandano i suoi rami,
17 sul terreno sassoso s'intreccino le sue radici,
tra le pietre attinga la vita.
18 Se lo si toglie dal suo luogo,
questo lo rinnega: «Non t'ho mai visto!».
19 Ecco la gioia del suo destino
e dalla terra altri rispuntano.
20 Dunque, Dio non rigetta l'uomo integro,
e non sostiene la mano dei malfattori.
21 Colmerà di nuovo la tua bocca di sorriso
e le tue labbra di gioia.
22 I tuoi nemici saran coperti di vergogna
e la tenda degli empi più non sarà.

8 Then Bildad the Shuhite(A) replied:
2 “How long will you say such things?(B)
Your words are a blustering wind.(C)
3 Does God pervert justice?(D)
Does the Almighty pervert what is right?(E)
4 When your children sinned against him,
he gave them over to the penalty of their sin.(F)
5 But if you will seek God earnestly
and plead(G) with the Almighty,(H)
6 if you are pure and upright,
even now he will rouse himself on your behalf(I)
and restore you to your prosperous state.(J)
7 Your beginnings will seem humble,
so prosperous(K) will your future be.(L)
8 “Ask the former generation(M)
and find out what their ancestors learned,
9 for we were born only yesterday and know nothing,(N)
and our days on earth are but a shadow.(O)
10 Will they not instruct(P) you and tell you?
Will they not bring forth words from their understanding?(Q)
11 Can papyrus grow tall where there is no marsh?(R)
Can reeds(S) thrive without water?
12 While still growing and uncut,
they wither more quickly than grass.(T)
13 Such is the destiny(U) of all who forget God;(V)
so perishes the hope of the godless.(W)
14 What they trust in is fragile[a];
what they rely on is a spider’s web.(X)
15 They lean on the web,(Y) but it gives way;
they cling to it, but it does not hold.(Z)
16 They are like a well-watered plant in the sunshine,
spreading its shoots(AA) over the garden;(AB)
17 it entwines its roots around a pile of rocks
and looks for a place among the stones.
18 But when it is torn from its spot,
that place disowns(AC) it and says, ‘I never saw you.’(AD)
19 Surely its life withers(AE) away,
and[b] from the soil other plants grow.(AF)

Bildad conferma il castigo per l'empio
8 (A)Allora Bildad di Suac rispose
e disse:
2 «Fino a quando terrai questi discorsi
e saranno le parole della tua bocca
come un vento impetuoso?
3 Potrebbe Dio pervertire il giudizio?
Potrebbe l'Onnipotente pervertire
la giustizia?
4 Se i tuoi figli hanno peccato contro di lui,
egli li ha dati in balía del loro misfatto;
5 ma tu, se ricorri a Dio
e implori l'Onnipotente,
6 se proprio sei puro e integro,
certo egli sorgerà in tuo favore
e restaurerà la tua giusta dimora.
7 Cosí sarà stato piccolo il tuo
principio,
ma la tua fine sarà grande oltre misura.
8 (B)«Interroga le passate generazioni,
rifletti sull'esperienza dei padri;
9 poiché noi siamo di ieri e non
sappiamo nulla;
i nostri giorni sulla terra non sono che un'ombra;
10 ma quelli certo t'insegneranno,
ti parleranno,
e dal loro cuore trarranno discorsi.
11 Può il papiro crescere dove non c'è limo?
Forse il giunco viene su senz'acqua?
12 Mentre sono verdi ancora, e senza che li si tagli,
prima di tutte le erbe, inaridiscono.
13 Tale è la sorte di tutti quelli che
dimenticano Dio;
la speranza dell'empio perirà.
14 La sua baldanza è troncata, la sua fiducia è come una tela di ragno.
15 Egli si appoggia alla sua casa,
ma essa non regge;
vi si aggrappa, ma quella non tiene.
16 Egli verdeggia al sole,
i suoi rami si protendono sul suo
giardino,
17 le sue radici s'intrecciano sul
mucchio delle macerie,
penetra fra le pietre della casa.
18 Ma divelto che sia dal suo luogo,
questo lo rinnega e gli dice: “Non ti ho mai visto!”
19 Tali sono le delizie che gli procura il suo comportamento!
Dalla polvere, altri dopo lui
germoglieranno.
20 No, Dio non respinge l'uomo
integro,
né porge aiuto a quelli che fanno
il male.
21 Egli renderà ancora il sorriso alla
tua bocca,
sulle tue labbra metterà canti
d'esultanza.
22 Quelli che ti odiano saranno
coperti di vergogna,
la tenda degli empi sparirà».

5 But if you earnestly seek(E) God
and ask the Almighty for mercy,(F)
6 if you are pure and upright,
then he will move even now on your behalf
and restore the home where your righteousness dwells.(G)
7 Then, even if your beginnings were modest,
your final days will be full of prosperity.(H)
8 For ask the previous generation,
and pay attention to what their ancestors discovered,(I)
9 since we were born only yesterday and know nothing.
Our days on earth are but a shadow.(J)
10 Will they not teach you and tell you
and speak from their understanding?
11 Does papyrus grow where there is no marsh?
Do reeds flourish without water?
12 While still uncut shoots,
they would dry up quicker than any other plant.
13 Such is the destiny[a] of all who forget God;
the hope of the godless(K) will perish.
14 His source of confidence is fragile;[b]
what he trusts in is a spider’s web.(L)
15 He leans on his web, but it doesn’t stand firm.
He grabs it, but it does not hold up.
16 He is a well-watered plant in the sunshine;
his shoots spread out over his garden.
17 His roots are intertwined around a pile of rocks.
He looks for a home among the stones.
18 If he is uprooted[c] from his place,
it will deny knowing him, saying, ‘I never saw you.’(M)
19 Surely this is the joy of his way of life;
yet others will sprout from the dust.
20 Look, God does not reject a person of integrity,
and he will not support[d] evildoers.(N)
21 He will yet fill your mouth with laughter
and your lips with a shout of joy.(O)
22 Your enemies will be clothed with shame;(P)
the tent(Q) of the wicked will no longer exist.
