5 Chiama, dunque! Ti risponderà forse qualcuno?
E a chi fra i santi ti rivolgerai?
2 Poiché allo stolto dà morte lo sdegno
e la collera fa morire lo sciocco.
3 Io ho visto lo stolto metter radici,
ma imputridire la sua dimora all'istante.
4 I suoi figli sono lungi dal prosperare,
sono oppressi alla porta, senza difensore;
5 l'affamato ne divora la messe
e gente assetata ne succhia gli averi.
6 Non esce certo dalla polvere la sventura
né germoglia dalla terra il dolore,
7 ma è l'uomo che genera pene,
come le scintille volano in alto.
8 Io, invece, mi rivolgerei a Dio
e a Dio esporrei la mia causa:
9 a lui, che fa cose grandi e incomprensibili,
meraviglie senza numero,
10 che dà la pioggia alla terra
e manda le acque sulle campagne.
11 Colloca gli umili in alto
e gli afflitti solleva a prosperità;
12 rende vani i pensieri degli scaltri
e le loro mani non ne compiono i disegni;
13 coglie di sorpresa i saggi nella loro astuzia
e manda in rovina il consiglio degli scaltri.
14 Di giorno incappano nel buio
e brancolano in pieno sole come di notte,
15 mentre egli salva dalla loro spada l'oppresso,
e il meschino dalla mano del prepotente.
16 C'è speranza per il misero
e l'ingiustizia chiude la bocca.
17 Felice l'uomo, che è corretto da Dio:
perciò tu non sdegnare la correzione
dell'Onnipotente,
18 perché egli fa la piaga e la fascia,
ferisce e la sua mano risana.
19 Da sei tribolazioni ti libererà
e alla settima non ti toccherà il male;
20 nella carestia ti scamperà dalla morte
e in guerra dal colpo della spada;
21 sarai al riparo dal flagello della lingua,
né temerai quando giunge la rovina.
22 Della rovina e della fame ti riderai
né temerai le bestie selvatiche;
23 con le pietre del campo avrai un patto
e le bestie selvatiche saranno in pace con te.
24 Conoscerai la prosperità della tua tenda,
visiterai la tua proprietà e non sarai deluso.
25 Vedrai, numerosa, la prole,
i tuoi rampolli come l'erba dei prati.
26 Te ne andrai alla tomba in piena maturità,
come si ammucchia il grano a suo tempo.
27 Ecco, questo abbiamo osservato: è così.
Ascoltalo e sappilo per tuo bene.

Elifaz esorta Giobbe ad accettare il suo castigo
5 (A)«Chiama pure! C’è forse chi ti risponda? A quale dei santi[a] vorrai tu rivolgerti?
2 No, il cruccio non uccide che l’insensato e l’irritazione fa morire lo stolto.
3 Io ho visto l’insensato mettere radici, ma ben presto ho dovuto maledire la sua casa.
4 I suoi figli vanno privi di soccorso, sono oppressi alla porta della città e non c’è chi li difenda.
5 L’affamato gli divora il raccolto, glielo ruba perfino dalle spine; l’assetato gli trangugia i beni.
6 Infatti la sventura non spunta dalla terra, né il dolore germina dal suolo;
7 ma l’uomo nasce per soffrire, come la favilla per volare in alto.
8 (B)«Io però vorrei cercare Dio, a Dio vorrei esporre la mia causa;
9 a lui, che fa cose grandi, imperscrutabili, meraviglie innumerevoli;
10 che sparge la pioggia sopra la terra e manda l’acqua sui campi;
11 che innalza quelli che erano abbassati e pone in salvo gli afflitti, in luogo elevato;
12 che sventa i disegni degli astuti, sicché le loro mani non giungono a eseguirli;
13 che prende gli abili nella loro astuzia[b], sicché il consiglio degli scaltri va in rovina.
14 Di giorno essi incorrono nelle tenebre, a mezzogiorno brancolano come di notte.
15 Ma Dio salva il meschino dalla spada della loro bocca, e il povero dalla mano del potente.
16 Così per il misero c’è speranza, mentre l’iniquità chiude la bocca.
17 (C)«Beato l’uomo che Dio corregge! Tu non disprezzare la lezione dell’Onnipotente;
18 perché egli fa la piaga, ma poi la fascia; egli ferisce, ma le sue mani guariscono.
19 In sei sciagure egli sarà il tuo liberatore, e in sette il male non ti toccherà.
20 In tempo di carestia ti scamperà dalla morte, in tempo di guerra dai colpi della spada.
21 Sarai sottratto al flagello della lingua, non temerai quando verrà il disastro.
22 In mezzo al disastro e alla fame riderai, non temerai le belve della terra;
23 perché avrai per alleate le pietre del suolo, e gli animali dei campi saranno con te in pace.
24 Saprai al sicuro la tua tenda; e, visitando i tuoi pascoli, vedrai che non ti manca nulla.
25 Saprai che la tua discendenza moltiplica, che i tuoi rampolli crescono come l’erba dei campi.
26 Te ne andrai maturo alla tomba, come i covoni di grano si accumulano a suo tempo.
27 Ecco quel che abbiamo trovato, riflettendo. Così è. Tu ascolta e fanne tesoro».

5 Ahora, pues, da voces; ¿habrá quien te responda?
¿Y a cuál de los santos te volverás?
2 Es cierto que al necio lo mata la ira,
Y al codicioso lo consume la envidia.
3 Yo he visto al necio que echaba raíces,
Y en la misma hora maldije su habitación.
4 Sus hijos estarán lejos de la seguridad;
En la puerta serán quebrantados,
Y no habrá quién los libre.
5 Su mies comerán los hambrientos,
Y la sacarán de entre los espinos,
Y los sedientos beberán su hacienda.
6 Porque la aflicción no sale del polvo,
Ni la molestia brota de la tierra.
7 Pero como las chispas se levantan para volar por el aire,
Así el hombre nace para la aflicción.
8 Ciertamente yo buscaría a Dios,
Y encomendaría a él mi causa;
9 El cual hace cosas grandes e inescrutables,
Y maravillas sin número;
10 Que da la lluvia sobre la faz de la tierra,
Y envía las aguas sobre los campos;
11 Que pone a los humildes en altura,
Y a los enlutados levanta a seguridad;
12 Que frustra los pensamientos de los astutos,
Para que sus manos no hagan nada;
13 Que prende a los sabios en la astucia de ellos,(A)
Y frustra los designios de los perversos.
14 De día tropiezan con tinieblas,
Y a mediodía andan a tientas como de noche.
15 Así libra de la espada al pobre, de la boca de los impíos,
Y de la mano violenta;
16 Pues es esperanza al menesteroso,
Y la iniquidad cerrará su boca.
17 He aquí, bienaventurado es el hombre a quien Dios castiga;
Por tanto, no menosprecies la corrección del Todopoderoso.(B)
18 Porque él es quien hace la llaga, y él la vendará;
Él hiere, y sus manos curan.
19 En seis tribulaciones te librará,
Y en la séptima no te tocará el mal.
20 En el hambre te salvará de la muerte,
Y del poder de la espada en la guerra.
21 Del azote de la lengua serás encubierto;
No temerás la destrucción cuando viniere.
22 De la destrucción y del hambre te reirás,
Y no temerás de las fieras del campo;
23 Pues aun con las piedras del campo tendrás tu pacto,
Y las fieras del campo estarán en paz contigo.
24 Sabrás que hay paz en tu tienda;
Visitarás tu morada, y nada te faltará.
25 Asimismo echarás de ver que tu descendencia es mucha,
Y tu prole como la hierba de la tierra.
26 Vendrás en la vejez a la sepultura,
Como la gavilla de trigo que se recoge a su tiempo.
27 He aquí lo que hemos inquirido, lo cual es así;
Óyelo, y conócelo tú para tu provecho.

5 Call now, if there be any that will answer thee, and to which of the kadoshim (holy ones) wilt thou turn?
2 For ka’as (anger) killeth the foolish man, and kinah (envy) slayeth the simple one.
3 I have seen the fool taking shoresh (root), but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
4 His banim are far from yesha (safety, salvation), and they are crushed in the sha’ar (gate, before the public), neither is there any to deliver them.
5 Whose katzir (harvest) the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even from among of the tzinnim (thorns), and the intriguer pants after their wealth.
6 Although affliction springeth not forth of the aphar (dust), neither doth amal (trouble, tzoros) sprout out of the adamah;
7 Yet adam is born unto amal (trouble, tzoros), even as sparks fly upward.
8 I would seek El (G-d), and before Elohim would I lay my cause;
9 Who doeth gedolot unsearchable, marvellous things without mispar;
10 Who giveth matar upon eretz, and sendeth mayim upon the fields;
11 To set up on high those that be the shefalim (the lowly ones); that those which mourn may be exalted to safety,
12 Thwarting the machshevot of the arumim (crafty ones), so that their hands cannot accomplish tushiyyah (success).
13 He taketh the chachamim in their own arum (craftiness), and the etzah of the wily is swiftly swept away.
14 They meet with choshech in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the lailah,
15 But He saveth the needy from the cherev of their mouth, and from the yad chazak.
16 So the poor hath tikveh, and olatah (perversity, wickedness) stoppeth her mouth.
17 Hinei, ashrei is the enosh whom Eloah correcteth; therefore despise not thou the musar (chastening) of Shaddai;
18 For He woundeth, and bindeth up; He injureth, and His yadayim (hands) heal.
19 He shall deliver thee in shesh tzoros; yea, in shivah there shall no rah touch thee.
20 In ra’av (famine) He shall redeem thee from mavet; and in milchamah from the power of the cherev.
21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the leshon, neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh; neither shalt thou be afraid of the chayyat ha’aretz.
23 For thou shalt be in league with the avanim of the sadeh, and the chayyat sadeh shall be hashelemah (at peace) with thee.
24 And thou shalt know that shalom shall be thy ohel; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and find nothing wanting.
25 Thou shalt know also that thy zera shall be rav, and thine offspring as the esev ha’aretz.
26 Thou shalt come to thy kever in a ripe age, like a shock of grain cometh in its season.
27 Hinei zot, this we have searched out, so it is; hear it, and apply thou it for thy good.
