La presunzione di Giobbe
33 Ascolta dunque, Giobbe, i miei discorsi,
ad ogni mia parola porgi l'orecchio.
2 Ecco, io apro la bocca,
parla la mia lingua entro il mio palato.
3 Il mio cuore dirà sagge parole
e le mie labbra parleranno chiaramente.
4 Lo spirito di Dio mi ha creato
e il soffio dell'Onnipotente mi dà vita.
5 Se puoi, rispondimi,
prepàrati davanti a me, stà pronto.
6 Ecco, io sono come te di fronte a Dio
e anch'io sono stato tratto dal fango:
7 ecco, nulla hai da temere da me,
né graverò su di te la mano.
8 Non hai fatto che dire ai miei orecchi
e ho ben udito il suono dei tuoi detti:
9 «Puro son io, senza peccato,
io sono mondo, non ho colpa;
10 ma egli contro di me trova pretesti
e mi stima suo nemico;
11 pone in ceppi i miei piedi
e spia tutti i miei passi!».
12 Ecco, in questo ti rispondo: non hai ragione.
Dio è infatti più grande dell'uomo.
13 Perché ti lamenti di lui,
se non risponde ad ogni tua parola?
14 Dio parla in un modo
o in un altro, ma non si fa attenzione.
15 Parla nel sogno, visione notturna,
quando cade il sopore sugli uomini
e si addormentano sul loro giaciglio;
16 apre allora l'orecchio degli uomini
e con apparizioni li spaventa,
17 per distogliere l'uomo dal male
e tenerlo lontano dall'orgoglio,
18 per preservarne l'anima dalla fossa
e la sua vita dalla morte violenta.
19 Lo corregge con il dolore nel suo letto
e con la tortura continua delle ossa;
20 quando il suo senso ha nausea del pane,
il suo appetito del cibo squisito;
21 quando la sua carne si consuma a vista d'occhio
e le ossa, che non si vedevano prima, spuntano fuori,
22 quando egli si avvicina alla fossa
e la sua vita alla dimora dei morti.
23 Ma se vi è un angelo presso di lui,
un protettore solo fra mille,
per mostrare all'uomo il suo dovere,
24 abbia pietà di lui e dica:
«Scampalo dallo scender nella fossa,
ho trovato il riscatto»,
25 allora la sua carne sarà più fresca che in gioventù,
tornerà ai giorni della sua adolescenza:
26 supplicherà Dio e questi gli userà benevolenza,
gli mostrerà il suo volto in giubilo,
e renderà all'uomo la sua giustizia.
27 Egli si rivolgerà agli uomini e dirà:
«Avevo peccato e violato la giustizia,
ma egli non mi ha punito per quel che meritavo;
28 mi ha scampato dalla fossa
e la mia vita rivede la luce».
29 Ecco, tutto questo fa Dio,
due volte, tre volte con l'uomo,
30 per sottrarre l'anima sua dalla fossa
e illuminarla con la luce dei viventi.
31 Attendi, Giobbe, ascoltami,
taci e io parlerò:
32 ma se hai qualcosa da dire, rispondimi,
parla, perché vorrei darti ragione;
33 se no, tu ascoltami
e io ti insegnerò la sapienza.

Eliú censura a Job
33 Por tanto, Job, oye ahora mi discurso,
y presta atención a todas mis palabras(A).
2 He aquí, ahora abro mi boca,
en mi paladar habla mi lengua.
3 Mis palabras proceden de la rectitud de mi corazón,
y con sinceridad mis labios hablan lo que saben[a](B).
4 El Espíritu de Dios me ha hecho(C),
y el aliento del Todopoderoso[b] me da vida(D).
5 Contradíceme si puedes(E);
colócate delante de mí, ponte en pie.
6 He aquí, yo como tú, pertenezco a Dios;
del barro yo también he sido formado[c](F).
7 He aquí, mi temor no te debe espantar,
ni mi mano[d] agravarse sobre ti(G).
8 Ciertamente has hablado a oídos míos,
y el sonido de tus palabras he oído:
9 «Yo soy limpio(H), sin transgresión(I);
soy inocente y en mí no hay culpa(J).
10 He aquí, Él busca[e] pretextos contra mí;
me tiene por enemigo suyo(K).
11 Pone mis pies en el cepo;
vigila todas mis sendas(L)».
12 He aquí, déjame decirte[f] que no tienes razón en esto,
porque Dios es más grande que el hombre(M).
13 ¿Por qué te quejas contra Él,
diciendo que no da cuenta de todas sus acciones(N)?
14 Ciertamente Dios habla una vez,
y otra vez[g](O), pero nadie se da cuenta de ello.
15 (P)En un sueño, en una visión nocturna,
cuando un sueño profundo cae sobre los hombres,
mientras dormitan en sus lechos,
16 entonces Él abre el oído de los hombres,
y sella su instrucción(Q),
17 para apartar al hombre de sus obras,
y del orgullo guardarlo[h];
18 libra su alma de la fosa(R)
y su vida de pasar al Seol[i](S).
19 El hombre es castigado también con dolor en su lecho,
y con queja continua en sus huesos(T),
20 para que su vida aborrezca el pan,
y su alma el alimento favorito(U).
21 Su carne desaparece a la vista(V),
y sus huesos que no se veían, aparecen(W).
22 Entonces su alma se acerca a la fosa(X),
y su vida a los que causan la muerte.
23 Si hay un ángel que sea su mediador(Y),
uno entre mil,
para declarar al hombre lo que es bueno para él[j],
24 y que tenga piedad de él, y diga:
«Líbralo de descender a la fosa(Z),
he hallado su rescate(AA)»;
25 que su carne se vuelva más tierna que en su juventud,
que regrese a los días de su vigor juvenil.
26 Entonces orará a Dios, y Él lo aceptará(AB),
para que vea con gozo su rostro(AC),
y restaure su justicia al hombre.
27 Cantará él a los hombres y dirá:
«He pecado(AD) y pervertido lo que es justo(AE),
y no es apropiado para mí.
28 Él ha redimido mi alma de descender a la fosa,
y mi vida verá la luz(AF)».
29 He aquí, Dios hace todo esto a menudo[k] con los hombres(AG),
30 para rescatar su alma de la fosa(AH),
para que sea iluminado con la luz de la vida.
31 Pon atención, Job, escúchame;
calla, y déjame hablar.
32 Si algo tienes que decir[l], respóndeme;
habla, porque deseo justificarte.
33 Si no, escúchame;
calla, y te enseñaré sabiduría(AI).

33 1-4 “So please, Job, hear me out,
honor me by listening to me.
What I’m about to say
has been carefully thought out.
I have no ulterior motives in this;
I’m speaking honestly from my heart.
The Spirit of God made me what I am,
the breath of God Almighty gave me life!
God Always Answers, One Way or Another
5-7 “And if you think you can prove me wrong, do it.
Lay out your arguments. Stand up for yourself!
Look, I’m human—no better than you;
we’re both made of the same kind of mud.
So let’s work this through together;
don’t let my aggressiveness overwhelm you.
8-11 “Here’s what you said.
I heard you say it with my own ears.
You said, ‘I’m pure—I’ve done nothing wrong.
Believe me, I’m clean—my conscience is clear.
But God keeps picking on me;
he treats me like I’m his enemy.
He’s thrown me in jail;
he keeps me under constant surveillance.’
12-14 “But let me tell you, Job, you’re wrong, dead wrong!
God is far greater than any human.
So how dare you haul him into court,
and then complain that he won’t answer your charges?
God always answers, one way or another,
even when people don’t recognize his presence.
15-18 “In a dream, for instance, a vision at night,
when men and women are deep in sleep,
fast asleep in their beds—
God opens their ears
and impresses them with warnings
To turn them back from something bad they’re planning,
from some reckless choice,
And keep them from an early grave,
from the river of no return.
19-22 “Or, God might get their attention through pain,
by throwing them on a bed of suffering,
So they can’t stand the sight of food,
have no appetite for their favorite treats.
They lose weight, wasting away to nothing,
reduced to a bag of bones.
They hang on the cliff-edge of death,
knowing the next breath may be their last.
23-25 “But even then an angel could come,
a champion—there are thousands of them!—
to take up your cause,
A messenger who would mercifully intervene,
canceling the death sentence with the words:
‘I’ve come up with the ransom!’
Before you know it, you’re healed,
the very picture of health!
26-28 “Or, you may fall on your knees and pray—to God’s delight!
You’ll see God’s smile and celebrate,
finding yourself set right with God.
You’ll sing God’s praises to everyone you meet,
testifying, ‘I messed up my life—
and let me tell you, it wasn’t worth it.
But God stepped in and saved me from certain death.
I’m alive again! Once more I see the light!’
29-30 “This is the way God works.
Over and over again
He pulls our souls back from certain destruction
so we’ll see the light—and live in the light!
31-33 “Keep listening, Job.
Don’t interrupt—I’m not finished yet.
But if you think of anything I should know, tell me.
There’s nothing I’d like better than to see your name cleared.
Meanwhile, keep listening. Don’t distract me with interruptions.
I’m going to teach you the basics of wisdom.”

33 “But now, Job, listen(A) to my words;
pay attention to everything I say.(B)
2 I am about to open my mouth;
my words are on the tip of my tongue.
3 My words come from an upright heart;(C)
my lips sincerely speak what I know.(D)
4 The Spirit(E) of God has made me;(F)
the breath of the Almighty(G) gives me life.(H)
5 Answer me(I) then, if you can;
stand up(J) and argue your case before me.(K)
6 I am the same as you in God’s sight;(L)
I too am a piece of clay.(M)
7 No fear of me should alarm you,
nor should my hand be heavy on you.(N)
8 “But you have said in my hearing—
I heard the very words—
9 ‘I am pure,(O) I have done no wrong;(P)
I am clean and free from sin.(Q)
10 Yet God has found fault with me;
he considers me his enemy.(R)
11 He fastens my feet in shackles;(S)
he keeps close watch on all my paths.’(T)
12 “But I tell you, in this you are not right,
for God is greater than any mortal.(U)
13 Why do you complain to him(V)
that he responds to no one’s words[a]?(W)
14 For God does speak(X)—now one way, now another(Y)—
though no one perceives it.(Z)
15 In a dream,(AA) in a vision(AB) of the night,(AC)
when deep sleep(AD) falls on people
as they slumber in their beds,
16 he may speak(AE) in their ears
and terrify them(AF) with warnings,(AG)
17 to turn them from wrongdoing
and keep them from pride,(AH)
18 to preserve them from the pit,(AI)
their lives from perishing by the sword.[b](AJ)
19 “Or someone may be chastened(AK) on a bed of pain(AL)
with constant distress in their bones,(AM)
20 so that their body finds food(AN) repulsive
and their soul loathes the choicest meal.(AO)
21 Their flesh wastes away to nothing,
and their bones,(AP) once hidden, now stick out.(AQ)
22 They draw near to the pit,(AR)
and their life to the messengers of death.[c](AS)
23 Yet if there is an angel at their side,
a messenger,(AT) one out of a thousand,
sent to tell them how to be upright,(AU)
24 and he is gracious to that person and says to God,
‘Spare them from going down to the pit;(AV)
I have found a ransom for them(AW)—
25 let their flesh be renewed(AX) like a child’s;
let them be restored as in the days of their youth’(AY)—
26 then that person can pray to God and find favor with him,(AZ)
they will see God’s face and shout for joy;(BA)
he will restore them to full well-being.(BB)
27 And they will go to others and say,
‘I have sinned,(BC) I have perverted what is right,(BD)
but I did not get what I deserved.(BE)
28 God has delivered(BF) me from going down to the pit,(BG)
and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’(BH)
