La smentita dei fatti
21 Giobbe rispose:
2 Ascoltate bene la mia parola
e sia questo almeno il conforto che mi date.
3 Tollerate che io parli
e, dopo il mio parlare, deridetemi pure.
4 Forse io mi lamento di un uomo?
E perché non dovrei perder la pazienza?
5 Statemi attenti e resterete stupiti,
mettetevi la mano sulla bocca.
6 Se io ci penso, ne sono turbato
e la mia carne è presa da un brivido.
7 Perché vivono i malvagi,
invecchiano, anzi sono potenti e gagliardi?
8 La loro prole prospera insieme con essi,
i loro rampolli crescono sotto i loro occhi.
9 Le loro case sono tranquille e senza timori;
il bastone di Dio non pesa su di loro.
10 Il loro toro feconda e non falla,
la vacca partorisce e non abortisce.
11 Mandano fuori, come un gregge, i loro ragazzi
e i loro figli saltano in festa.
12 Cantano al suono di timpani e di cetre,
si divertono al suono delle zampogne.
13 Finiscono nel benessere i loro giorni
e scendono tranquilli negli inferi.
14 Eppure dicevano a Dio: «Allontanati da noi,
non vogliamo conoscer le tue vie.
15 Chi è l'Onnipotente, perché dobbiamo servirlo?
E che ci giova pregarlo?».
16 Non hanno forse in mano il loro benessere?
Il consiglio degli empi non è lungi da lui?
17 Quante volte si spegne la lucerna degli empi,
o la sventura piomba su di loro,
e infliggerà loro castighi con ira?
18 Diventano essi come paglia di fronte al vento
o come pula in preda all'uragano?
19 «Dio serba per i loro figli il suo castigo...».
Ma lo faccia pagare piuttosto a lui stesso e lo senta!
20 Veda con i suoi occhi la sua rovina
e beva dell'ira dell'Onnipotente!
21 Che cosa gli importa infatti della sua casa dopo
di sé,
quando il numero dei suoi mesi è finito?
22 S'insegna forse la scienza a Dio,
a lui che giudica gli esseri di lassù?
23 Uno muore in piena salute,
tutto tranquillo e prospero;
24 i suoi fianchi sono coperti di grasso
e il midollo delle sue ossa è ben nutrito.
25 Un altro muore con l'amarezza in cuore
senza aver mai gustato il bene.
26 Nella polvere giacciono insieme
e i vermi li ricoprono.
27 Ecco, io conosco i vostri pensieri
e gli iniqui giudizi che fate contro di me!
28 Infatti, voi dite: «Dov'è la casa del
prepotente,
dove sono le tende degli empi?».
29 Non avete interrogato quelli che viaggiano?
Non potete negare le loro prove,
30 che nel giorno della sciagura è risparmiato il
malvagio
e nel giorno dell'ira egli la scampa.
31 Chi gli rimprovera in faccia la sua condotta
e di quel che ha fatto chi lo ripaga?
32 Egli sarà portato al sepolcro,
sul suo tumulo si veglia
33 e gli sono lievi le zolle della tomba.
Trae dietro di sé tutti gli uomini
e innanzi a sé una folla senza numero.
34 Perché dunque mi consolate invano,
mentre delle vostre risposte non resta che inganno?

約伯的回答
21 約伯回答說：
2 「你們仔細聽我說，
便是給我的慰藉。
3 請容忍我把話說完，
之後任憑你們嘲笑。
4 我豈是向人抱怨？
我有理由不耐煩。
5 你們看到我會大吃一驚，
嚇得用手掩口。
6 我一想到自己，就心驚膽戰，
渾身發抖。
7 為何惡人活著，得享長壽，
勢力強大？
8 他們的兒孫圍繞膝前，
他們得見後代茁壯成長。
9 他們家中平安無懼，
他們不被上帝杖打。
10 他們的公牛繁殖力強，
他們的母牛從不掉胎。
11 他們讓孩童像羊群一樣走到戶外，
盡情地歡跳。
12 他們伴著鈴鼓和豎琴歌唱，
在笛聲中歡喜不已。
13 他們一生幸福，
安然下到陰間。
14 他們對上帝說，『離開我們，
我們不想學習你的道。
15 全能者是誰，竟要我們事奉祂？
向祂禱告有何益處？』
16 看啊，他們的幸福不在他們手中；
因此，我決不苟同他們的想法。
17 「惡人的燈何曾熄滅？
災難何曾臨到他們？
上帝何曾發怒使他們受苦？
18 他們何曾像風中的碎稭，
像被暴風捲去的糠秕？
19 你們說上帝會把懲罰留給他們的兒女，
我認為不如報應在他們本人身上，
讓他們親自領教。
20 願他們親眼看見自己滅亡。
願他們喝下全能者的烈怒。
21 因為他們的歲月一旦度盡，
又怎會關心身後的家人？
22 「上帝既審判身居高位者，
誰還能傳授知識給祂？
23 有人至死仍充滿活力，

21 But Job answered and said,
2 Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.
3 Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.
4 As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?
5 Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.
6 Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.
7 Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?
8 Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.
9 Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.
10 Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.
11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.
12 They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.
13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.
14 Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.
15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?
16 Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
17 How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
18 They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.
19 God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.
20 His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
21 For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?
22 Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.
23 One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.
24 His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.
25 And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.
26 They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.
28 For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?
29 Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,
30 That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.
31 Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?
32 Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.
33 The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.
34 How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?

Job’s Seventh Speech: A Response to Zophar
21 Then[a] Job answered and said,
2 “Listen carefully to my words,
and let this be your[b] consolation.
3 Bear with me, and I myself[c] will speak;
then[d] after my speaking you can mock.
4 As for me, is my complaint for human beings?
And if so, why cannot I be impatient?
5 Turn to me and be appalled,
and place your hand on your mouth.
6 And when I think of it, I am horrified,[e]
and shuddering seizes my flesh.
7 “Why do the wicked live,
grow old, even grow mighty in power?
8 With them their offspring are established before them,[f]
and their descendants before their eyes.
9 Their houses are safe without fear,
and the rod of God is not upon them.
10 His bull breeds and does not fail;
his cow calves and does not miscarry.
11 They send out their little ones like the flock,
and their children dance around.
12 They sing[g] to the tambourine and lyre,
and they rejoice to the sound of the long flute.
13 They spend their days in prosperity,
and in peace they go down to Sheol.
14 And they say to God, ‘Turn away from us,
for[h] we do not desire to know your ways.
15 Who is Shaddai that we should serve him,
or[i] what would we benefit when we plead with him?’
16 Look, their prosperity is not in their hands;
the schemes of the wicked are repugnant[j] to me.
17 “How often is the lamp of the wicked put out,
and their disaster comes upon them?
He[k] distributes pains in his anger.
18 How often are they like straw before[l] the wind,
and like chaff that the storm carries away?
19 ‘God stores up his iniquity for his children’?[m]
Then let him repay it to him that[n] he may know.
20 Let his eyes see his decay,
and let him drink from the wrath of Shaddai,
21 for what does he care for[o] his house after him,
when the number of his months is[p] cut off?
22 Can anyone teach knowledge to God,
since[q] he himself[r] judges high ones?
23 This one dies in full prosperity,[s]
completely[t] at ease and secure.
24 His vats are full with milk
and the marrow of his bones is moist.
25 Yet[u] another dies with a bitter inner self[v]
and has not tasted prosperity.
26 They lie down together in the dust,
and maggots cover them.
27 “Look, I know your[w] thoughts
and the schemes you devise against me.
28 For you say, ‘Where is the nobleman’s house,
and where are the tents in which the wicked dwell?’[x]
29 Do you not ask those traveling the roads,
and do you not take notice of their accounts?
30 Indeed, the wicked is spared from the day of disaster;
he is delivered from the day of wrath.
31 Who denounces his way to his face?
And who repays him for what he has done?
32 When[y] he is brought to the grave,
then[z] someone stands guard over the tomb.
33 The clods of the valley are sweet to him;
everyone will follow after him,
and before[aa] him they are innumerable.[ab]
34 So[ac] how will you comfort me with emptiness,
when[ad] fraud is left in your answers?”
