Fratelli miei, non associate favoritismi personali alla fede del nostro Signore Gesú Cristo, il Signore della gloria.

Se nella vostra assemblea, infatti, entra un uomo con un anello d'oro, vestito splendidamente, ed entra anche un povero con un vestito sporco,

e voi avete un particolare riguardo a colui che porta la veste splendida e gli dite: «Tu siediti qui in un bel posto», e al povero dite: «Tu stattene là in piedi», oppure: «Siediti qui vicino al mio sgabello»,

non avete fatto una discriminazione fra voi stessi, divenendo cosí giudici dai ragionamenti malvagi?

Ascoltate, fratelli miei carissimi, non ha Dio scelto i poveri del mondo, perché siano ricchi in fede ed eredi del regno che egli ha promesso a coloro che lo amano?

Ma voi avete disonorato il povero! Non sono forse i ricchi quelli che vi tiranneggiano? Non sono essi quelli che vi trascinano davanti ai tribunali?

Non sono essi quelli che bestemmiano il glorioso nome che è stato invocato su di voi?

Se veramente adempite la legge regale secondo la Scrittura: «Ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso», fate bene;

ma se usate favoritismi personali, commettete peccato e siete condannati dalla legge come trasgressori.

10 Chiunque infatti osserva tutta la legge, ma viene meno in un sol punto, è colpevole su tutti i punti.

11 Difatti, colui che ha detto: «Non commettere adulterio», ha anche detto: «Non uccidere». Per cui se tu non commetti adulterio ma uccidi, sei trasgressore della legge.

12 Parlate quindi e agite come se doveste essere giudicati dalla legge della libertà,

13 perché il giudizio sarà senza misericordia contro chi non ha usato misericordia; e la misericordia trionfa sul giudizio.

14 A che giova, fratelli miei, se uno dice di aver fede ma non ha opere? Può la fede salvarlo?

15 Or, se un fratello o una sorella sono nudi e mancano del cibo quotidiano,

16 e qualcuno di voi dice loro: «Andatevene in pace, scaldatevi e saziatevi», ma non date loro le cose di cui hanno bisogno per il corpo, a che giova?

17 Cosí è pure della fede; se non ha le opere, per se stessa è morta.

18 Ma qualcuno dirà: «Tu hai la fede, e io ho le opere»; mostrami la tua fede senza le tue opere e io ti mostrerò la mia fede con le mie opere.

19 Tu credi che c'è un solo Dio. Fai bene; anche i demoni credono e tremano.

20 Ma vuoi renderti conto, o insensato, che la fede senza le opere è morta?

21 Abrahamo, nostro padre, non fu forse giustificato per mezzo delle opere quando offrí il proprio figlio Isacco sull'altare?

22 Tu vedi che la fede operava insieme alle opere di lui, e che per mezzo delle opere la fede fu resa perfetta.

23 Cosí si adempí la Scrittura, che dice: «Or Abrahamo credette a Dio, e ciò gli fu imputato a giustizia»; e fu chiamato amico di Dio.

24 Perciò vedete che l'uomo è giustificato per le opere e non per fede soltanto.

25 Similmente anche Rahab, la prostituta, non fu essa giustificata per le opere quando accolse i messi e li rimandò per un'altra strada?

26 Infatti, come il corpo senza lo spirito è morto, cosí anche la fede senza le opere è morta.

爱所有的人

我的兄弟们,既然你们是我们荣耀的主耶稣基督的信徒,待人就要一视同仁。 如果一个穿着华贵衣裳、手戴金戒指的人和一个衣衫褴褛的穷人同时来到你们的聚会, 而你待那个衣着华贵的人特别客气,对他说∶“请上坐。”却对那个穷人说∶“站在那儿。”或者说∶“坐在我的脚边。” 你这是在做什么呢?你待人没有一视同仁,你是在恶意歧视人。

我亲爱的兄弟,听着!上帝选择了世人眼中的穷人,使他们在信仰上富足,并让他们去领受他应许给爱他的人的王国。 但是,你们竟歧视穷人!难道不正是富人剥削你们,并把你们拉上法庭的吗? 难道不正是他们诽谤拥有你们的基督的美名吗?

如果你们真正遵守《经》 [a]中的那条至尊律法∶“爱人如爱己。”你们就做对了。 但是,如果你们不能一视同仁地待人,你们就是在犯罪,就要做为犯法者被定罪。 10 任何执行整个律法的人,只要他违背了其中的一条戒令,他就等于违背了律法的所有戒令。 11 上帝说∶“不可通奸。”还说∶“不可杀人。”所以,尽管你没有通奸,但是你却杀了人,那么你就成了违法之徒。 12 既然你们要受到那使人得到自由的律法的审判,那么在你们一切的言行举止中,就应该牢记这点。 13 因为,谁对别人不施怜悯,上帝在审判他时,也就没有怜悯。怜悯会战胜审判。

信仰与出色的工作

14 我的兄弟们,如果有人说,他有信仰,但却没有行动,那他的信仰就毫无价值。那样的信仰能拯救他吗?绝对不能! 15 如果有位兄弟或姐妹衣不蔽体、食不果腹, 16 你们对他说∶“上帝与你们同在!愿你们吃饱穿暖!”你们虽然这么说,但是,却不给这个人所需要的东西。你们不去帮助他,你们的话就毫无价值。 17 信仰也是如此,没有行动的信仰是死的,因为它是孤立的。

18 不过,有人会说∶“你有信仰,而我却有行动。”让我看看你那没有行动的信仰,我会用行动让你看到我的信仰。 19 你相信只有一个上帝,好啊!魔鬼也相信这一点,并且恐惧的直发抖。

20 你们这些愚人!你们想知道那没有行动的信仰是毫无用处的吗? 21 当我们的祖先亚伯拉罕把自己的儿子以撒献在祭坛上,他不就是由于他的行为而得到上帝的认可的吗? 22 所以,你们可以看出,亚伯拉罕的信仰和他的行为是相辅相成的。他通过行动使自己的信仰得以完美。 23 这就应验了《经》里的话∶“亚伯拉罕相信上帝,上帝接受了他的信仰,那信仰使他到了上帝的认可。”因此,他被称为“上帝的朋友。” 24 所以,你们可以看出一个人得到上帝的认可,是凭他的行为,而不仅凭信仰。

25 同样,妓女喇合把侦探(上帝子民的)迎进家中,还帮助他们从另一条路逃走,不也是凭自己的行动得到上帝的认可的吗?

26 因此,正如一个没有灵的身体是死的,同样,没有行动的信仰也是死的。

Favoritism Forbidden

My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious(A) Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.(B) Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges(C) with evil thoughts?

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters:(D) Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world(E) to be rich in faith(F) and to inherit the kingdom(G) he promised those who love him?(H) But you have dishonored the poor.(I) Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?(J) Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”[a](K) you are doing right. But if you show favoritism,(L) you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.(M) 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles(N) at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.(O) 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,”[b](P) also said, “You shall not murder.”[c](Q) If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged(R) by the law that gives freedom,(S) 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful.(T) Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Faith and Deeds

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?(U) Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.(V) 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?(W) 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.(X)

18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Show me your faith without deeds,(Y) and I will show you my faith(Z) by my deeds.(AA) 19 You believe that there is one God.(AB) Good! Even the demons believe that(AC)—and shudder.

20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[d]?(AD) 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?(AE) 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together,(AF) and his faith was made complete by what he did.(AG) 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”[e](AH) and he was called God’s friend.(AI) 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?(AJ) 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.(AK)

My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;

And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
