Chúa Phó Mình cho Kẻ Ác
(Mat 26:47-56; Mác 14:43-50; Lu 22:47-53)
18 Sau khi Ðức Chúa Jesus đã nói những lời ấy, Ngài và các môn đồ Ngài đi qua bên kia Khe Kết-rôn, ở đó có một cái vườn; Ngài và các môn đồ Ngài vào vườn đó. 2 Giu-đa kẻ phản Ngài cũng biết chỗ ấy, vì Ðức Chúa Jesus thường họp với các môn đồ Ngài tại đó. 3 Bấy giờ Giu-đa dẫn một đội lính, cùng thuộc hạ của các trưởng tế và những người Pha-ri-si, mang đèn, đuốc, và vũ khí đến đó.
4 Ðức Chúa Jesus biết mọi việc sắp xảy đến với Ngài, Ngài bước tới và hỏi, “Các ngươi tìm ai?”
5 Họ trả lời Ngài, “Jesus người Na-xa-rét.”
Ðức Chúa Jesus nói với họ, “Chính Ta đây.” Giu-đa, kẻ phản Ngài, cũng đứng chung với họ. 6 Khi Ngài phán với họ, “Chính Ta đây,” họ lùi lại và té xuống đất.
7 Ngài lại hỏi họ, “Các ngươi tìm ai?”
Họ đáp, “Jesus người Na-xa-rét.”
8 Ðức Chúa Jesus nói, “Ta đã nói với các ngươi rằng chính Ta đây. Nếu các ngươi tìm Ta, hãy để những người này đi.”
9 Như thế là ứng nghiệm lời Ngài đã nói, “Con không làm mất một người nào Cha đã ban cho Con.”
10 Lúc ấy Si-môn Phi-rơ có một thanh gươm; ông rút ra, tấn công một đầy tớ của vị thượng tế, và chém đứt tai phải người ấy; người đầy tớ ấy tên là Man-chu. 11 Ðức Chúa Jesus bảo Phi-rơ, “Hãy tra gươm ngươi vào vỏ. Chén Cha đã trao cho Ta, Ta không uống sao?”
Chúa Bị Áp Giải đến An-nát
(Mat 26:57)
12 Vậy quân lính, viên sĩ quan chỉ huy, và các thuộc hạ của người Do-thái bắt Ðức Chúa Jesus và trói lại. 13 Trước hết, họ giải Ngài đến An-nát,[a] vì ông ấy là nhạc phụ của Cai-a-pha, vị thượng tế năm đó. 14 Cai-a-pha là người đã khuyên dân Do-thái rằng thà một người chịu chết cho toàn dân thì hơn.
Phi-rơ Chối Chúa Lần Thứ Nhất
(Mat 26:69-70; Mác 14:66-68; Lu 22:55-57)
15 Si-môn Phi-rơ với một môn đồ khác đi theo Ðức Chúa Jesus. Nhờ quen biết với vị thượng tế môn đồ đó có thể theo Ðức Chúa Jesus vào sân của dinh thượng tế, 16 nhưng Phi-rơ phải đứng bên ngoài cổng. Người môn đồ quen biết với vị thượng tế đi ra nói với chị gác cổng và đem Phi-rơ vào. 17 Bấy giờ người nữ nô lệ gác cổng nói với Phi-rơ, “Bộ ông không phải là một môn đồ của ông ấy sao?”
Phi-rơ trả lời, “Không phải tôi.”
18 Vì trời lạnh nên các đầy tớ và các thuộc hạ nhóm một đống lửa, rồi đứng sưởi ấm; Phi-rơ cũng đứng sưởi ấm với họ.
Thượng Tế An-nát Chất Vấn Chúa
(Mat 26:59-68; Mác 14:56-65; Lu 22:63-71)
19 Bấy giờ vị thượng tế hạch hỏi Ðức Chúa Jesus về các môn đồ Ngài và về những lời dạy của Ngài. 20 Ðức Chúa Jesus trả lời ông, “Ta từng nói công khai giữa thiên hạ; Ta thường giảng dạy trong các hội đường và đền thờ, là những nơi người Do-thái tụ họp; Ta chẳng nói lén lút điều gì. 21 Tại sao ngươi hỏi Ta? Hãy hỏi những người đã nghe Ta nói với họ. Này, họ biết Ta đã nói những gì.”
22 Khi Ngài đã nói như vậy một tên sĩ quan đứng gần đó tát Ðức Chúa Jesus một cái và nói, “Anh trả lời thượng tế như thế sao?”
23 Ðức Chúa Jesus nói với hắn, “Nếu Ta nói sai, hãy chỉ ra chỗ sai của Ta; còn nếu Ta nói đúng, tại sao ngươi đánh Ta?”
24 An-nát sai giải Ðức Chúa Jesus, vẫn bị trói, đến Cai-a-pha, vị thượng tế đương nhiệm.
Phi-rơ Chối Chúa Hai Lần Nữa
(Mat 26:71-75; Mác 14:69-72; Lu 22:58-62)
25 Khi ấy Si-môn Phi-rơ đang đứng sưởi ấm, chợt có người hỏi ông, “Ông cũng là một môn đồ của ông ấy phải không?”
Phi-rơ chối và nói, “Không phải tôi.”
26 Một trong các đầy tớ của vị thượng tế có bà con với người bị Phi-rơ chém đứt tai nói, “Không phải tôi đã thấy ông trong vườn với ông ấy sao?” 27 Phi-rơ lại chối nữa; ngay lúc đó một con gà cất tiếng gáy.
Chúa Trước Tòa Phi-lát
(Mat 27:11-18, 20-23; Mác 15:2-15;Lu 23:2-3, 18-25)
28 Sáng sớm hôm đó họ giải Ðức Chúa Jesus từ nhà Cai-a-pha đến dinh Tổng Trấn, nhưng chính họ không vào dinh để khỏi bị ô uế hầu có thể ăn Lễ Vượt Qua. 29 Vì thế Phi-lát đi ra gặp họ và hỏi, “Các ngươi cáo buộc người này về tội gì?”
30 Họ trả lời và nói với ông, “Nếu người này không phải là kẻ làm ác, chúng tôi đã không nộp hắn cho quan.”
31 Phi-lát nói với họ, “Các ngươi hãy dẫn người ấy đi và xử theo luật các ngươi.”
Người Do-thái trả lời ông, “Chúng tôi không được phép xử tử ai.” 32 Thế là lời Ðức Chúa Jesus đã nói trước về Ngài sẽ chết cách nào được ứng nghiệm.
33 Phi-lát trở vào dinh, sai điệu Ðức Chúa Jesus đến, và hỏi Ngài, “Ngươi có phải là Vua dân Do-thái không?’
34 Ðức Chúa Jesus trả lời, “Ngươi nói điều này là tự ý ngươi hay đã có ai nói với ngươi về Ta?”
35 Phi-lát trả lời, “Ta không phải là người Do-thái phải không? Chính đồng bào ngươi và các trưởng tế đã nộp ngươi cho ta. Ngươi đã làm gì?”
36 Ðức Chúa Jesus đáp, “Vương quốc Ta không thuộc về thế gian này. Nếu vương quốc Ta thuộc về thế gian này thì các tôi tớ Ta đã chiến đấu, để Ta không bị nộp vào tay người Do-thái, nhưng vương quốc Ta không từ thế gian này.”
37 Phi-lát hỏi Ngài, “Vậy ngươi là Vua sao?”
Ðức Chúa Jesus trả lời, “Chính ngươi nói rằng Ta là Vua. Vì lý do đó Ta đã được sinh ra, và vì lý do đó Ta đã đến trong thế gian để làm chứng cho chân lý. Ai thuộc về chân lý thì nghe tiếng Ta.”
38 Phi-lát nói với Ngài, “Chân lý là gì?”
Sau khi nói như vậy, ông trở ra gặp người Do-thái và nói với họ, “Ta không tìm thấy ông ấy có tội gì. 39 Nhưng các ngươi có được thông lệ này: cứ vào Lễ Vượt Qua, ta thả cho các ngươi một người. Các ngươi muốn ta thả ‘Vua dân Do-thái’ ra không?”
40 Họ gào to lại, “Chớ thả người ấy, nhưng hãy thả Ba-ra-ba.” Vả, Ba-ra-ba là một tên trộm cướp.

- Giăng 18:13 An-nát vốn là thượng tế, nhưng ông đã bị người La-mã truất quyền và không cho thi hành chức vụ từ năm 15 S.C. Dù ông không được thi hành chức vụ, nhưng danh vị thượng tế của ông vẫn còn. Ngoài ra, An-nát còn được nhiều người cả nể vì ông là nhạc phụ của Cai-a-pha, vị thượng tế đương nhiệm.

18 Sau khi cầu xin những điều này, Đức Giê-su cùng các môn đệ băng qua khe Kít-rôn, tại đó có một khu vườn, Ngài và các môn đệ vào khu vườn.
2 Giu-đa, kẻ phản nộp Ngài cũng biết chỗ này, vì Chúa thường họp với các môn đệ tại đó. 3 Giu-đa dẫn một đội lính và một số thuộc hạ của các thượng tế và nhóm Pha-ri-si vào vườn, mang theo đèn đuốc và khí giới.
4 Đức Giê-su đã biết mọi việc sắp xảy đến cho Ngài, nên bước ra hỏi họ: “Các ngươi tìm ai?”
5 Họ đáp: “Giê-su, người Na-xa-rét.” Ngài trả lời: “Chính Ta đây.” Giu-đa, kẻ phản nộp Ngài, cũng đang đứng đó với họ. 6 Nghe Ngài bảo: “Chính Ta đây,” họ giật lùi, ngã nhào xuống đất.

8 Đức Giê-su đáp: “Ta đã bảo các ngươi, chính Ta đây. Nếu các ngươi tìm bắt Ta hãy để những người này đi.” 9 Việc này nhằm ứng nghiệm lời Ngài đã nói: “Những người Cha ban cho Con, Con không để mất một ai cả.”
10 Si-môn Phê-rơ sẵn có thanh gươm, nên rút ra chém đứt vành tai bên phải của Man-chu, đầy tớ của vị trưởng tế.
11 Đức Giê xu bảo Phê-rơ: “Hãy nạp gươm vào vỏ; chén Cha đã ban cho Ta, Ta không uống sao?”
Bị Giải Đến An-ne
12 Thế rồi, đội lính và viên chỉ huy cùng các thuộc hạ của giới chức Do Thái bắt Đức Giê-su trói lại. 13 Họ giải Ngài đến An-ne trước, vì ông là nhạc phụ của Cai-pha, vị trưởng tế đương nhiệm. 14 Chính Cai-pha trước đây đã bàn với giới thẩm quyền Do Thái: “Thà để một người chết thay cho toàn dân vẫn hơn.”
Phê-rơ Chối Chúa(B)
15 Si-môn Phê-rơ và một môn đệ nữa đi theo Ngài. Môn đệ kia nhờ quen biết vị trưởng tế nên vào được trong sân dinh với Đức Giê-su, 16 còn Phê-rơ đứng ngoài cửa. Môn đệ quen biết vị trưởng tế ra nói với cô gái giữ cửa, rồi đưa Phê-rơ vào trong.
17 Cô gái giữ cửa hỏi Phê-rơ: “Ngươi cũng thuộc nhóm môn đệ của người ấy phải không?” Phê-rơ trả lời: “Không phải tôi!”
18 Các gia nhân và đám thuộc hạ đốt một đống lửa rồi đứng sưởi vì trời giá lạnh; Phê-rơ cũng đứng sưởi với họ.
Vị Trưởng Tế Tra Hỏi Chúa Giê-su(C)
19 Vị trưởng tế tra hỏi Đức Giê-su về các môn đệ của Ngài và những giáo lý Ngài dạy dỗ.
20 Đức Giê-su đáp: “Ta đã tuyên bố công khai cho cả thiên hạ. Ta thường dạy dỗ trong các hội đường hay trong đền thờ, nơi tập họp của người Do Thái. Ta chẳng nói điều gì lén lút cả. 21 Sao ông lại hạch hỏi Ta? Hãy tra hỏi những người nghe Ta, xem Ta bảo họ những gì. Chính họ biết rõ những điều Ta dạy dỗ.”
22 Nghe Đức Giê-su nói vậy, một tên thuộc hạ đang đứng bên cạnh vả mặt Ngài mắng rằng: “Sao ngươi dám trả lời vị trưởng tế như vậy?”
23 Đức Giê-su đáp: “Nếu Ta sai, hãy chỉ ra Ta sai chỗ nào, còn nếu Ta nói phải, sao lại đánh Ta?” 24 Rồi An-ne sai giải Đức Giê-su vẫn còn bị trói, sang trưởng tế Cai-pha.
Phê-rơ Lại Chối Chúa(D)
25 Đang khi Si-môn Phê-rơ đứng sưởi tại đó, mấy người kia hỏi: “Ngươi cũng thuộc nhóm môn đệ của ông ta phải không?” Nhưng Phê-rơ chối: “Không phải tôi!”
26 Một gia nhân của vị trưởng tế, có họ hàng với người bị Phê-rơ chém đứt tai, nói: “Chính ta đã chẳng thấy ngươi ở trong khu vườn với ông ta đó sao!” 27 Phê-rơ lại chối một lần nữa; tức thì gà gáy.
Gặp Phi-lát(E)
28 Chúng giải Đức Giê-su từ nhà Cai-pha đến dinh thống đốc. Lúc ấy trời còn sớm. Họ không dám vào trong dinh vì sợ bị ô uế, không ăn lễ Vượt Qua được. 29 Cho nên Phi-lát đi ra bên ngoài hỏi: “Các ngươi tố cáo người này tội gì?”
30 Họ trả lời: “Nếu hắn không làm ác, chúng tôi đã chẳng giải đến nộp quan.”
31 Phi-lát bảo họ: “Thế thì hãy chiếu luật của các ngươi mà xử tội hắn đi!” Những người Do Thái thưa lại: “Chúng tôi không có quyền xử tử ai hết.” 32 Việc này xảy ra để ứng nghiệm điều Đức Giê-su đã bảo trước Ngài phải chết cách nào.
33 Phi-lát trở vào trong dinh gọi Đức Giê-su hỏi: “Có phải ngươi là Vua dân Do Thái không?”
34 Đức Giê-su trả lời: “Ông hỏi Ta như vậy hay có ai trình với ông về Ta?”
35 Phi-lát nói: “Ta là người Do Thái sao? Dân tộc ngươi và các thượng tế đã nộp ngươi cho ta. Ngươi đã làm gì vậy?”
36 Đức Giê-su đáp: “Vương quốc Ta không thuộc thế gian này. Nếu vương quốc Ta thuộc thế gian này, các môn đệ Ta đã chiến đấu để Ta khỏi bị nộp vào tay người Do Thái. Không, vương quốc Ta không thuộc thế gian này.”
37 Phi-lát liền hỏi Ngài: “Vậy ngươi là vua sao?” Đức Giê-su đáp: “Chính ông vừa bảo Ta là vua. Lý do Ta được sinh ra và lý do Ta đến thế gian này là để làm chứng cho chân lý. Ai thuộc về chân lý thì nghe theo tiếng Ta.”
38 Phi-lát hỏi: “Chân lý là gì?” Nói xong, Phi-lát trở ra bên ngoài bảo các người Do Thái: “Ta không tìm được lý do nào để buộc tội người này cả. 39 Nhưng theo tục lệ của các ngươi, ta thường phóng thích cho các ngươi một tù nhân trong dịp lễ Vượt Qua này. Các ngươi muốn ta phóng thích vua dân Do Thái cho các ngươi không?”
40 Họ lại la lớn phản đối: “Không, đừng tha hắn. Xin tha cho Ba-ra-ba.” Ba-ra-ba là một tên cướp.

Jesus is arrested in the garden
18 1-2 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Cedron valley to a place where there was a garden, and they went into it together. Judas who betrayed him knew the place, for Jesus often met his disciples there.
3-4 So Judas fetched the guard and the officers which the chief priests and Pharisees had provided for him, and came to the place with torches and lanterns and weapons. Jesus, fully realising all that was going to happen to him, went forward and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “I am the man,” said Jesus. (Judas who was betraying him was standing there with the others.)
6-7 When he said to them, “I am the man”, they retreated and fell to the ground. So Jesus asked them again, “Who are you looking for?” And again they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8-9 “I have told you that I am the man,” replied Jesus. “If I am the man you are looking for, let these others go.” (Thus fulfilling his previous words, “I have not lost one of those whom you gave me.”)
10-11 At this, Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and slashed at the High Priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) But Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given me?”
Peter follows Jesus, only to deny him
12-17 Then the guard, with their captain and the Jewish officers, took hold of Jesus and tied his hands together, and led him off to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year. Caiaphas was the man who advised the Jews, “that it would be a good thing that one man should die for the sake of the people.” Behind Jesus followed Simon Peter, and one other disciple who was known personally to the High Priest. He went in with Jesus into the High Priest’s courtyard, but Peter was left standing at the door outside. So this other disciple, who was acquainted with the High Priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter inside. The young woman at the door remarked to Peter, “Are you one of this man’s disciples, too?” “No, I am not,” retorted Peter.
18 In the courtyard, the servants and officers stood around a charcoal fire which they had made, for it was cold. They were warming themselves, and Peter stood there with them, keeping himself warm.
19 Meanwhile the High Priest interrogated Jesus about his disciples and about his own teaching.
20-21 “I have always spoken quite openly to the world,” replied Jesus. “I have always taught in the synagogue or in the Temple where all the Jews meet together, and I have said nothing in secret. Why do you question me? Why not question those who have heard me about what I said to them? Obviously they are the ones who know what I actually said.”
22 As he said this, one of those present, an officer, slapped Jesus with his open hand, remarking, “Is that the way for you to answer the High Priest?”
23 “If I have said anything wrong,” Jesus said to him, “you must give evidence about it, but if what I said was true, why do you strike me?
24 Then Annas sent him, with his hands still tied, to the High Priest Caiaphas.
Peter’s denial
25 In the meantime Simon Peter was still standing, keeping himself warm. Some of them said to him, “Surely you too are one of his disciples, aren’t you?” And he denied it and said, “No, I am not.”
26 Then one of the High Priest’s servants, a relation of the man (Malchus) whose ear Peter had cut off, remarked, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”
27 And again Peter denied it. And immediately the cock crew.
Jesus is taken before the Roman authority
28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas’ presence into the palace. It was now early morning and the Jews themselves did not go into the palace, for fear that they would be contaminated and would not be able to eat the Passover.
29 So Pilate walked out to them and said, “What is the charge that you are bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not an evil-doer, we should not have handed him over to you,” they replied.
31-32 To which Pilate retorted, “Then take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” “We are not allowed to put a man to death,” replied the Jews (thus fulfilling Christ’s prophecy of the method of his own death).
33 So Pilate went back into the Palace and called Jesus to him. “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked.
34 “Are you asking this of your own accord,” replied Jesus, “or have other people spoken to you about me?”
35 “Do you think I am a Jew?” replied Pilate. “It’s your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What have you done, anyway?”
36 “My kingdom is not founded in this world—if it were, my servants would have fought to prevent my being handed over to the Jews. But in fact my kingdom is not founded on all this!”
37 “So you are a king, are you?” returned Pilate. “Indeed I am a king,” Jesus replied; “the reason for my birth and the reason for my coming into the world is to witness to the truth. Every man who loves truth recognises my voice.”
38-39 To which Pilate retorted, “What is ‘truth’?” and went straight out again to the Jews and said: “I find nothing criminal about him at all. But I have an arrangement with you to set one prisoner free at Passover time. Do you wish me then to set free for you the ‘king of the Jews’?”
40 At this, they shouted out again, “No, not this man, but Barabbas!” Barabbas was a bandit.

9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.
10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,
13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.
22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.
28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.
33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

Jesus Arrested(A)
18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(B) On the other side there was a garden,(C) and he and his disciples went into it.(D)
2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(E) 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding(F) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(G) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(H) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(I)
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,”(J) they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(K)
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[a](L)
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(M) the Father has given me?”
12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(N) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(O) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(P)
Peter’s First Denial(Q)
15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(R) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(S) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.
He replied, “I am not.”(T)
18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(U) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(V)
The High Priest Questions Jesus(W)
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(X) or at the temple,(Y) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(Z) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(AA) nearby slapped him in the face.(AB) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(AC) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(AD) the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials(AE)
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(AF) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(AG)
26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(AH) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(AI) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(AJ)
Jesus Before Pilate(AK)
28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(AL) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(AM) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(AN) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AO)
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AP) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AQ)
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AR) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AS) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AT)
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AU) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AV)
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AW) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AX)
