7 Atunci când oamenii din acel loc îl întrebau despre soţia lui, el le răspundea că este sora lui, deoarece se temea să le spună că este soţia lui, crezând că oamenii locului îl vor omorî din cauza Rebecăi, pentru că era frumoasă. 8 După ce a stat mai multă vreme acolo, s-a întâmplat că regele Abimelek s-a uitat pe fereastră şi l-a văzut pe Isaac dezmierdând-o pe soţia sa, Rebeca.

9 Abimelek l-a chemat pe Isaac şi i-a zis:

– Cu siguranţă, ea este soţia ta! Atunci de ce ai pretins că este sora ta?

– Pentru că mă temeam că voi muri din cauza ei, a răspuns Isaac.

10 – Ce ne-ai făcut? a continuat Abimelek. Unul dintre oamenii din popor s-ar fi putut culca cu soţia ta şi astfel ai fi adus vina asupra noastră.

11 Prin urmare, Abimelek a poruncit întregului popor: „Oricine se va atinge de acest om sau de soţia lui va fi omorât.“

12 Isaac a semănat în acea ţară şi, în acelaşi an, a recoltat însutit, pentru că Domnul l-a binecuvântat. 13 El s-a îmbogăţit, iar bogăţia a continuat să-i crească până când a ajuns foarte bogat. 14 Avea turme de oi, cirezi de vite şi mulţi sclavi; de aceea filistenii îl invidiau. 15 Ei au astupat, umplând cu pământ, toate fântânile pe care sclavii tatălui său, Avraam, le săpaseră pe când acesta era în viaţă.

16 Abimelek i-a zis lui Isaac: „Pleacă de la noi, deoarece ai ajuns mult mai puternic decât noi.“ 17 Atunci Isaac a plecat de acolo, şi-a aşezat tabăra în valea Gherar şi a locuit acolo. 18 El a săpat din nou fântânile care fuseseră săpate pe vremea tatălui său, Avraam, întrucât filistenii le-au astupat după moartea lui Avraam; el le-a dat acestora aceleaşi nume pe care tatăl său le dăduse înainte. 19 Sclavii lui Isaac au săpat în vale şi au descoperit acolo o fântână cu apă proaspătă, 20 dar păstorii din Gherar s-au certat cu păstorii lui Isaac, zicând: „Apa este a noastră.“ Isaac i-a pus fântânii numele Esek[c], pentru că ei s-au certat cu el. 21 Apoi au săpat o altă fântână, dar ei s-au certat şi pentru aceasta; de aceea i-a pus numele Sitna[d]. 22 Isaac a plecat de acolo şi a săpat o altă fântână, pentru care nu s-au mai certat; de aceea i-a pus numele Rehobot[e], zicând: „Acum Domnul ne-a făcut loc şi vom fi roditori în ţară.“ 23 De acolo a plecat la Beer-Şeba, 24 iar în noaptea aceea Domnul i S-a arătat şi i-a zis: „Eu sunt Dumnezeul tatălui tău, Avraam; nu te teme, pentru că Eu sunt cu tine; te voi binecuvânta şi-ţi voi înmulţi urmaşii datorită robului Meu Avraam.“ 25 Isaac a zidit acolo un altar şi a chemat Numele Domnului; el şi-a întins cortul în acel loc, iar sclavii săi au săpat acolo o fântână.

26 După aceea, Abimelek a venit la el din Gherar, împreună cu Ahuzat, sfetnicul său, şi cu Pihol, conducătorul oştirii sale. 27 Isaac i-a întrebat:

– De ce aţi venit la mine, când voi m-aţi urât şi m-aţi izgonit de la voi?

28 Ei i-au răspuns:

– Vedem clar că Domnul este cu tine şi ne-am gândit că trebuie să încheiem un jurământ între noi. Să încheiem acest legământ între noi: 29 promite-ne că nu ne vei face nici un rău, aşa cum nici noi nu ne-am atins de tine şi ţi-am făcut numai bine, lăsându-te să pleci în pace. Acum tu eşti binecuvântat de Domnul.

30 Isaac le-a dat un ospăţ, iar ei au mâncat şi au băut. 31 A doua zi, dimineaţa, s-au sculat devreme şi au încheiat împreună legământul; apoi Isaac i-a lăsat să plece, iar ei au plecat de la el în pace. 32 În aceeaşi zi, sclavii lui Isaac au venit şi l-au anunţat despre fântâna pe care o săpaseră, zicându-i că au dat de apă. 33 El i-a pus numele Şeba[f]. De aceea numele cetăţii este Beer-Şeba până în ziua de azi.

Binecuvântarea şi fuga lui Iacov în Padan-Aram

34 La vârsta de patruzeci de ani, Esau s-a căsătorit cu Iudita, fiica hititului Beeri, şi cu Basmat, fiica hititului Elon, 35 însă ele au fost o sursă de amărăciune pentru Isaac şi Rebeca.

Isaac engaña a Abimelec

6 Habitó, pues, Isaac en Gerar. 7 Y cuando los hombres de aquel lugar le preguntaron acerca de su mujer, él dijo: Es mi hermana(L); porque tenía temor(M) de decir: Es mi mujer. Porque pensaba: no sea que los hombres del lugar me maten por causa de Rebeca, pues es de hermosa apariencia(N). 8 Y sucedió que después de haber estado allí largo tiempo, Abimelec, rey de los filisteos, miró por una ventana, y he aquí, vio a Isaac acariciando a Rebeca su mujer. 9 Entonces Abimelec llamó a Isaac, y le dijo: He aquí ciertamente ella es tu mujer. ¿Cómo, pues, dijiste: «Es mi hermana»? E Isaac le respondió: Porque me dije: «No sea que yo muera por causa de ella». 10 Y Abimelec dijo: ¿Qué es esto que nos has hecho(O)? Porque alguno del pueblo fácilmente pudiera haberse acostado con tu mujer, y hubieras traído culpa sobre nosotros. 11 Y Abimelec ordenó a todo el pueblo, diciendo: El que toque a este hombre o a su mujer(P), de cierto morirá.

Bendición de Dios sobre Isaac

12 Y sembró Isaac en aquella tierra, y cosechó[g] aquel año ciento por uno. Y el Señor lo bendijo(Q). 13 Y el hombre se enriqueció[h], y siguió engrandeciéndose hasta que llegó a ser muy poderoso[i](R); 14 pues tenía rebaños de ovejas y vacadas y mucha servidumbre(S), y los filisteos le tenían envidia. 15 Y todos los pozos que los siervos de su padre habían cavado en los días de Abraham su padre(T), los filisteos los cegaron llenándolos[j] de tierra. 16 Entonces Abimelec dijo a Isaac: Vete de aquí[k], porque tú eres mucho más poderoso que nosotros(U). 17 Isaac partió de allí, acampó en el valle[l] de Gerar y se estableció[m] allí.

18 Isaac volvió a cavar los pozos de agua que habían sido cavados[n] en los días de su padre Abraham, porque los filisteos los habían cegado después de la muerte de Abraham, y les puso los mismos nombres[o] que su padre les había puesto[p]. 19 Cuando los siervos de Isaac cavaron en el valle encontraron allí un pozo de aguas vivas. 20 Entonces riñeron los pastores de Gerar con los pastores de Isaac, diciendo: El agua es nuestra. Por eso él llamó al pozo Esek[q], porque habían reñido con él(V). 21 Cavaron otro pozo, y también riñeron por él; por eso lo llamó Sitna[r]. 22 Y se trasladó de allí y cavó otro pozo, y no riñeron por él; por eso lo llamó Rehobot[s], porque dijo: Al fin[t] el Señor ha hecho lugar[u] para nosotros(W), y prosperaremos en la tierra(X).

23 De allí subió a Beerseba(Y). 24 Y el Señor se le apareció aquella misma noche, y le dijo(Z):

Yo soy el Dios de tu padre Abraham(AA);
no temas, porque yo estoy contigo(AB).
Y te bendeciré y multiplicaré tu descendencia[v](AC),
por amor de mi siervo Abraham.

25 Y él construyó allí un altar e invocó el nombre del Señor(AD) y plantó allí su tienda; y allí abrieron los siervos de Isaac un pozo.

Pacto entre Isaac y Abimelec

26 Entonces Abimelec vino a él desde Gerar, con su consejero[w] Ahuzat y con Ficol, jefe de su ejército(AE). 27 Y les dijo Isaac: ¿Por qué habéis venido a mí, vosotros que me odiáis y me habéis echado de entre vosotros(AF)? 28 Y ellos respondieron: Vemos claramente que el Señor ha estado contigo(AG), así es que dijimos: «Haya ahora un juramento entre nosotros, entre tú y nosotros, y hagamos un pacto contigo, 29 de que no nos harás ningún mal, así como nosotros no te hemos tocado y[x] solo te hemos hecho bien, y te hemos despedido en paz. Tú eres ahora el bendito del Señor(AH)». 30 Entonces él les preparó un banquete, y comieron y bebieron(AI). 31 Y se levantaron muy de mañana y se hicieron mutuo juramento(AJ); entonces Isaac los despidió y ellos partieron de su lado en paz. 32 Y sucedió que aquel mismo día los siervos de Isaac llegaron y le informaron acerca del pozo que habían cavado, y le dijeron: Hemos hallado agua. 33 Y lo llamó Seba[y]; por eso el nombre de la ciudad es Beerseba[z](AK) hasta hoy.

34 Cuando Esaú tenía cuarenta años, se casó con[aa] Judit, hija de Beeri hitita, y con Basemat, hija de Elón hitita(AL); 35 y ellas hicieron la vida insoportable[ab] para Isaac y Rebeca(AM).

26 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.

2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:

7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.

8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.

9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.

10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.

11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.

13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:

14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.

15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.

16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.

17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

19 And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.

21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.

22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

23 And he went up from thence to Beersheba.

24 And the Lord appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.

25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.

26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.

27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?

28 And they said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;

29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord.

30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.

31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.

33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.

34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:

35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.

Isaac and Abimelek(A)

26 Now there was a famine in the land(B)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(C) in Gerar.(D) 2 The Lord appeared(E) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(F) live in the land where I tell you to live.(G) 3 Stay in this land for a while,(H) and I will be with you(I) and will bless you.(J) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(K) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(L) 4 I will make your descendants(M) as numerous as the stars in the sky(N) and will give them all these lands,(O) and through your offspring[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,[b](P) 5 because Abraham obeyed me(Q) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(R) and my instructions.(S)” 6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(T)

7 When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(U)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”

8 When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(V) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(W)”

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”

10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(X) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(Y) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(Z)

12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(AA) because the Lord blessed him.(AB) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(AC) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(AD) that the Philistines envied him.(AE) 15 So all the wells(AF) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(AG) filling them with earth.

16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(AH) you have become too powerful for us.(AI)”

17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(AJ) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(AK) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(AL) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(AM) So he named the well Esek,[c] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(AN) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[d] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[e](AO) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(AP) and we will flourish(AQ) in the land.”

23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(AR) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(AS) Do not be afraid,(AT) for I am with you;(AU) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(AV) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(AW)

25 Isaac built an altar(AX) there and called on the name of the Lord.(AY) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(AZ)

26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(BA) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(BB)”

28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(BC) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(BD) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(BE) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(BF)

30 Isaac then made a feast(BG) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(BH) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.

32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(BI) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[f] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[g](BJ)

Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing

34 When Esau was forty years old,(BK) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(BL) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(BM)
